i havent watched your videos yet but for some reason i feel like they will help. I know I can get correct pitch, and sometimes i can have great tone, but I'm plagued with doubt mentally about where the actual singing should come from, where i should focus my energy, the balance between relaxation, release and tension. Should the start of a note feel like the sweet spot of 'bite' like when putting a car into gear? Should I build up the tension of the air and then release? Anyway i will watch your videos now, maybe i will understand more.

Should I feel like I im sort of blowing out air but through a tight filter, or should i feel like im releasing as little air as possible? again, more questions ill see.

That’s a great question…and its HUGE! It’s clear you already understand much about the voice, realising it’s ALWAYS A BALANCE between relaxation, tension and release. Better vocal technique and process can help you explore the infinity of the human voice. It will also help you understand better - WHERE and HOW you should relax while singing (NOT everywhere), - WHERE and HOW vocal release is inter-connected with RESONANCE (Physics tells we singers that when WE FEEL BLOCKED/STRAINED we are creating a BAD BACK-PRESSURE WAVE!), - WHERE and HOW vocal tension can occur and separating DAMAGING tensions from EXPRESSIVE/STYLISTIC tensions in singing. The start of a note is its ONSET. We singers are capable of an almost infinitely variable ONSET which is a complex relationship between breath, muscle and physics. And all onsets FEEL, MEAN and FUNCTION differently! WOW!

BLOWING air is usually bad because it wastes precious breath and dries and potentially damages the moist vocal folds. Depending on how you sing, the way you USE YOUR BREATH will change all the time and is INEXTRICABLY LINKED to the way your vocal folds function. Better singing TECHNIQUE will help you explore and master this!

If you watch the video closely, you'll see that breath leaving the body BECAUSE of SURRENDERING to elastic lung recoil is a DIFFERENT ACTION from ACTIVELY BLOWING air to make it leave. APPOGGIO - according to the Old Italian School - is based on using the abdomen to RESIST/SLOW DOWN this natural elastic lung recoil, thus resulting in a BALANCE of in and out forces. This BALANCE is the fundamental breath activity underlying classical-type vocal sounds.

This is really interesting. You talk a lot essentially about the "passivity" or "recoil" nature of the out breath. Funnily enough, I believe Janice Chapman talks a lot about the "passivity" of the IN breath, and as a singer, working on the idea of recoil when inhaling, as opposed to exhaling... thoughts? I'm pretty sure it is her who encourages the singer to really work the transverse/obliques on the out breath, to ensure optimal and efficient sub glottal pressure? I would be really fascinated if you had any other good sources that support your idea of the recoil out breath? :-)

The INBREATH and the OUTBREATH are inextricably related. Like both sides of a tennis or golf swing, the arc BEFORE hitting the ball directly affects the arc AFTER hitting the ball. I try to get singers to a point of BREATH EQUILIBRIUM with these two events, resulting in the LEAST AMOUNT OF PRESSURE/abdominal activation to SUPPORT the sound. In defining support, I subscribe to the idea of 'slowing down the breath leaving you body' (inhibit diaphragm ascension) BALANCED against the action of ELASTIC LUNG RECOIL which of course is about breath flowing FROM your body with minimal pressure.

Tim, wouldn't you agree that singing certain intense Rock songs involves the management of tension?
@vocalalchemy8688
@vocalalchemy8688 9 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely! All singing involves the skillful management of tension. In classical singing styles any tension must be hidden from the audience but in all other forms of singing, the tension is part of the stylistic sound. That's why classical singers often can't cross over into pop successfully as they don't know how to re-introduce the correct kind of tension.
