I landed here on a UAL 737 at 11PM. The aircrew performed a carrier deck landing, but this one was harder. The struts bottomed out hard with a shotgun type blast inside the cabin. The entire passenger cabin was filled with curse words. This flight had a check captain onboard performing an evaluation. I hope he didn't falsify the report.

Such a shame these legendary aircraft have all been retired. Such a unique airplane

9000 ft is not a short runway, jumbos can land on a runway of that length

The spoilers open when the touchdown logic is satisfied- strut compression, wheel spin-up or bogie tilt, depending on the airplane. It occurs after the crew arms the spoilers during the landing check. This was a smooth touchdown.

I live in the ORF airspace and hear these “Rockets to Atlanta” all day long. Single most loud plane still in service to ORF. I look on Flight Radar 24 and the same plane has been back and forth all day between Norfolk and Atlanta. God that must be boring for the pilots and crew.

David Carter “Rockets to Atlanta” is quite an appropriate name for the Mad Dogs. I live in CHS and these things come and go all day, every day. Very loud too.

ORF is NOT a small runway it is 9000 feet long !!!!!, That was not a bumpy landing....
@hawkssoftball24195 жыл бұрын
Straight up, that was a pretty smooth landing.

Maurice Yeah its not small at all and I can say that cause I live in Norfolk and go spotting there often.

Nice video. Not a bumpy landing. Sink rate arrested in flare, no skip or bounce plus you were right behind the main gear.
@captbrakeset76305 жыл бұрын
I hear you don't really flare this bird, you just fly it onto runway in the same attitude as final - it'll start floating if you raise the nose. Some dial in a little elevator trim then touch down on one main first, then the other for a smoother touch down. Most important: any landing after which they can use the airplane again is a good landing.

Wow! That was an awesome landing by Delta MD88!!! The time from touchdown to not even the terminal was a long ride....H International is HUGE!!!!! Love it!!

Great vid...loved that classic MD-88 sound. One thing I've noticed on every single MD-80 series aircraft I've ever flown or vid I've watched, is how frequent the thrust amount is changed, especially during landing. I've never heard any other aircraft adjust the thrust input as much as I've heard it on the MD-80 series...wonder why that is. Anyway, thx for the vid...OH, que. Is Norfolk the airport that serves VA Beach??

Nathan Huffman yes
@captbrakeset76305 жыл бұрын
Everybody adjusts power but it's sometimes easier to hear it when seated toward the back on the rear-engined planes - remember, you've got the controllers saying speed up, slow down, maintain altitude, descend and the changes in flap settings, dropping the gear not to mention weather.

ORF is a short runway; with a nice tidal marsh at the end to give the pilot a good reason to stop. It has to be one of the biggest throwbacks of an airport vs the size of the city it serves. I've lived in VAB more than 20 years, and have only flown directly someplace once. Locals who use ORF become rather well acquainted with Atlanta and Charlotte airports; high-fiving yourself as to go through ATL to get to Chicago. Land in ORF and listen to the flight attendant try to pronounce Norfolk. Thanks for sharing.

Last time I flew Delta we landed in ATL on an MD-90 and I have never felt braking like that in my life, if it weren't for our seatbelts we would have all flown out of our seats, was interesting to say the least

Yeah it was cool. Surprisingly I knew it was not going to be a good landing when we were on final approach. Seemed too fast and too high
