Very nice, Mr. Hunter. Most of the time it looks to me like in order to stay off shore you are working a little across the bigger swell coming from you left that is headed toward shore (looks pretty dang big toward the end of the video!). Does the prevailing local wind tend to often work in that direction there?
@alanshunter Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul , thanks for the input. this run is really west to East, it starts reasonably sheltered then builds all the way to the finish , Its basically a wind wave all the way but theres certain points that things tend to jack up and create issues . Its just tidal pull from bays along the route but it really tugs on the boat. The side waves are corrections on my part to get me to a good finish point , I know I need to put those corrections in early or I end up with a really difficult beam on sea to the final turn.

Is there a time you don't want a leash from you to your ski? Getting worked in breaking waves close to shore maybe a situation where you want your leash to fail or not be secured to your person. Glad you didn

woops...didn't get hurt!
@alanshunter Жыл бұрын
I agree but this leash was very lightweight, it's not happening in the actual surf zone here . One quartering wind wave that started to break rather than the surf to beach. I think we've all been towed to the beach and had to release at the strap , tough as that is it's possible. If this particular leash had remained then a remount would have been a possibility. Good that the shore wasn't 4km away and this had happened.

@@alanshunter I just wish I was as good at high bracing on my surfski as i am in a decked boat (sea kayak etc.).

I've broken two leashes in the past year. My theory is that attaching the leash in the middle of the ski causes the ski to pull sideways on a wave which exerts much more pull than if the leash is attached at the tail, allowing the ski to clock around and pull through the wave. So now I use a waist strap to attach the leash to me, and I run the leash over the deck to the rear handle. You can still break a cheapo leash this way, but at least the damn thing is out of the bucket where it gets all tangled. I know downwinders like the ski to be parallel to the swell to remount and the leash in the middle kind of keeps it that way, but for me in the surf I'd just as soon have the ski end up perpendicular to the next wave. Some examples of home made leashes would be great to see. Store bought ones usually intended for SUP users are pretty much a crap shoot quality wise.

Glad the paddler was ok and the ski hopefully not too badly damaged. As for the leash though, this is why I make my own.
@alanshunter2 жыл бұрын
Yes that's a good plan.
@paulreavley59002 жыл бұрын
Alan, I believe there is a lot of variety in leash strength and quality. There are some leashes whose construction I trust that do not have metal joints, swivels, etc. whose internal condition is not easy to inspect. I do not trust coil leashes where the coil is simply some solid plastic. I much prefer those that have something like a dyneema core that is far stronger than any of the plastics used in coil leashes. And the kinds of bungie/webbing leashes I have found for foil and kite boards can be very strong. They don't compress and stay out of the way quite as much as coils, but I have found the ones I use to be workable (I use them for waist leashes). That said, I still think it is not a bad idea to replace important safety equipment like a leash periodically as a relatively inexpensive precaution.

@hedydd23 жыл бұрын
`I worked at J R Dale and Sons, Seacliff and lived at Seacliff in 1976. The Bass was green as in this video back then but the Gannets seem to have multiplied many-fold by today, because the Bass is bereft of vegetation and looks like an iceberg sticking skywards out of the depths. A whole lot has changed since those days and not much for the better. The old landmarks and buildings are mostly all still there though. Love going back to see what are now literally old friends and haunts. I was only 18 when I stayed there, nearly 400 miles from home and long before mobile phones. I remember seeing the first Ford Fiesta in the garage opposite the turn into the High Street. Had to go to the kiosk at Whitekirk to phone home once a week.
