Poor horse, she could have lived a long beautiful life!! I blame people for this, they way they force and abuse these beautiful creatures! Ruffian is not the only horse who died such a tragic way, many horse in the races to this day broke the're legs and had to be put out! I broke into tears while watching this, rest in peace ruffian!❤❤😢😢🥺🥺

Ruffian was about to pull away from Foolish Pleasure when the incident occured the beating of Foolish Pleasure was assured only to be tarnished by the breakdown of Ruffian note the hold on the reins on the jockey of Ruffian when she was about to pull away

I remember this race. It is so heartbreaking to watch this, I still cry when I see this. RIP Ruffian….may you rest in eternal peace in heaven. There are three horses I love the most, all having great courage and heart, Man O’War, Secretariat, and Ruffian, all one of a kind horse and unique individuals. All horses are unique individuals, and all having different body structures and characteristics. Colts and Fillies are also built differently, having different body structures and strengths, the same as people do. For Ruffian to be running such a grinding race, she was way too young for it, even though she was started into it, and maybe not quite a three year old??? One thing she needed was more time for muscle growth and more time for her bones to also strengthen in her legs. In the horse racing industry, it’s mostly all about money and breeding and NOT the conditions of the horses themselves. Plus, coupled with the fact that if a horse is born late in the year, they are still considered a year old on January the 1st. I do not know if this practice is still in effect, but I do know it has been used in the past. I did some research on it. This is a big disadvantage for any horse to race against other horses, which may be running with an older horse, instead of its own age group, including also the fact that breeding horses for a certain type of look and/or speed factor in their genetics, creates a problem with their development and their abilities…..one of them is inbreeding them, especially if their lineage shows many leg, hoof, or lung problems in their backgrounds. These genetic conditions will follow within many of their offspring. Another factor, when race horses are consistently losing races, aging or are no longer suitable for someone’s stable, many usually end up in auction and slaughter houses, a sad, very painful and pathetic ending for horses giving us the pleasure of racing them or within any other sporting events where horses are competing and are unable to do so anymore. BUT….the biggest issue??? It is also a waste of a good life….humanity is guilty on every level with this issue. If humanity isn’t happy with anything, or with what they have, it’s tossed aside as so much garbage, be it horses or any other animals, including any other species of life it encounters. This includes not only older horses/animals, but also young foals/animals which are considered NOT good enough to be considered or included into the herd/family. Humanity’s History is filled with this behavior. Our ancient ancestors were cruel and indifferent with both their animals and slaves….today’s society is NO DIFFERENT. History repeating itself. ALL LIFE IS SACRED AND PRECIOUS and SHOULD BE GIVEN THE DIGNITY and RESPECT IT DESERVES, anything less is foolishness and ignorance. ALL LIFE IS CONNECTED and ALL LIFE DEPENDS UPON THE OTHER FOR ITS EXISTENCE and SURVIVAL. When one dies out, the rest will follow. RIP Ruffian, may you run free in green pastures of heaven….🙏🏼😇

I was a kid when I saw this. I was astounded, shocked that she was still trying to run and win. She was incredible. RIP Ruffian, you were the best.
