I upvote for Munchausen references. But man, this game does not seem like much fun. I had been curious about it ever since I saw the boxart way back when in ads, but this seems like such a chored emanding constant leaps of faith with obtuse rules that could kill you at any time. Not a fan.

I'd recommend trying it out for yourself if you can find it (or a rom of it). I suspect you'll enjoy it more than you think. Thanks for watching!

Uuuum... I'm confused. You titled this "a forgotten gem"... But nothing about this video makes this game sound like a gem. You spent most of the video criticizing the game, describing how flawed and generally bad it is, and still saying that it's supposedly good.

I'm playfully roasting the game, yes. But not because it's bad, because it can be frustrating the first time you play it - many great games are frustrating in places. I do recommend this game.

Is something from SEGA happening with the Master System? I've been seeing more and more articles on the master system here and there, and that's odd considering how much the system has been left alone up to now.

I played this as a kid. Back in those days, most games were punishing like this. If you're used games being easy with a talking tutorial and map, not gonna get it in 1983! You actually do suck at this game. I did better as a 7 year old playing for the 1st time..

NES game devs: OK, we can't disarm the player. Shooting Mega Man bullets is what hooks people. Instead, we have to make invincible enemies that are unpredictable so our game will have impossible difficulty to bloat replay value. Imagine if we made a game that you play for 5 hours, enjoy it and beat it. Who'd want that?

My impression is that the SNES version has superior gameplay, the Sega version has superior music: am I willing to test or challenge this impression through "empirical methods" and actually try the game? No. No, not at all. I rely on volunteers like yourself to spend long hours "in the lab" so I don't have to. ;-)

As much as I like the more action-focused elements of Shenmue, it's the game's coziness that made it one of my favorite games ever. Giving a name and food to a little stray kitty, having a lunch break with the boys after a hard day of forklifting, calling Nozomi to see if she's alright, buying a drink to a homeless man... These are small yet impactful things that games usually don't really focus on, and something Shenmue 2 sadly neglected a little.
@RetrosGameReviews
@RetrosGameReviews 4 ай бұрын
I totally agree with you about those little moments of real life. Shenmue II throws Ryo into such a big environment that it makes sense to overwhelm him a little but there were still some chill things in there like Lucky Hit and sparring with Jianmin. The game does give you a good rest at the end in Guilin, which was such a bold way to end things. Love both games tho!

@@RetrosGameReviews it's not that I'm trying to badmouth Shenmue 2, it is a great game. it's just that the first Shenmue was more about home while the second one was about being far from home, and personally I prefer the first aproach that's all.
