Haven't seen this race before, despite being a regular at Odsal around that time. Had no idea how Len just obliterated a high-class field. What a drive! Interesting to see just how quick they were around there even on road tyres and in the days when a 454 was state-of-the-art power, Brian Powles in particular stands out. Perhaps not the most entertaining WF of all time but has made me realise that even all those years ago, F1s were still absolutely rapid, it's easy to think they must be miles quicker today but looking at that, I'm not too sure...thanks for the video.

I think he was black flagged, due to the fire underneathhis car. He was in the consolation semi of that year but finished 3rd. First two going through.

Any idea to what speeds they were hitting on the straights? Must have been 100mph+
@robw7676
@robw7676 Жыл бұрын
Having been to the last long track WF, I would have guessed at the slowest point of the corner, speed was maybe 50mph and the fastest straight speed at about 120mph. I just paused the video a couple of times and got a clean lap for Lundy of about 25 secs, which is a 72 mph average if it is a half mile lap, which I think it was... so I think those speeds are about right. Somebody who raced there in a quick car towards the end of the long track era like John, Falding, Junior Wainman etc... could probably give a more accurate number based on revs and gearing - they must have had all that well dialed in to win there.

I was at that meeting and saw Len Wolfenden crowned world champion. Stuart Smiths race was over very early as he was pushed up onto the railway sleepers by i think Bobby Burns. The final he won to which this video relates was fantastic Brian Powles pushed him all the way but Mr Smith was not to be denied.

In the days when ITV televised decent and obscure sports. No mention of which track this was but I could just make out one of the trackside hoardings - Northampton Stadium. Have you any footage from Long Eaton?

Posting as a Southerner we never had this more like saloon racing aka F1 follow the leader moved 'up north' in the 80,s and i am no petrol head but this is hell for leather racing and racing for a pittance and went to many tracks around here. Take a visit into the open pit area and chat great times that will sadly never be seen again.
