Love to see folks making use of "found" objects that otherwise would end up in a landfill! Also love to see someone who incorporates canoeing into their day to day lifestyle!

I'm considering buying a Swift Pack 12'6" from a shop here in the UK. Currently trying to decide between that, and a Swift Prospector 13. I worry that the Pack is a hybrid and neither one thing or the other, but maybe i shouldn't be so concerned with what the purists think! 😂

Just watched the channel "Woman in the woods" and she brought up your channel and instantly had to check things out and didn't take long to subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Great stuff , I love anything outdoors, fishing, hunting, hiking , cooking anything outdoors gets my attention LOL. Just realized this video is two years old so I have some catching up to do LOL, hope you have a great week.

Martin, I did my first solo in Killarney may 14th 3 years ago into O.S.A. for 3 nights and hell on earth exist. I was in the middle of o.s.a and it was almost the same as on land. I learned so much in that trip. Never to go at that time of year again 😂

Thank you so much for this video. Very informative and gave me some added perspective. For instance, for a bailor bucket I've always gone with those emergency kits that double as a bailor bucket, and thought that anything so versatile should be people's #1 choice. However, you're setup just makes more sense from the perspective of access and storage for travel. In the end I love your way better.

I'm a little worried about the useful lifespan of my current DIY thwart made of PVC and pool noodle. I think I'll try this and use have my pvc as backup. Gonna use a stronger wood for my 45lb boat. Seems genius. A little worried about sliding up and down the gunwales. I'll report back.

When i was camping in the 70s and 80s the tent didn't have a floor. We just used plastic.
@PineMartyn
@PineMartyn Жыл бұрын
Yes, integrated tent floors are actually a recent innovation in tent designs. Floorless tents were erected using poles that had to be guyed out for the most part. Campers would use a heavy tarpaulin as a floor if they expected they might find themselves on soggy ground. Eventually integrated floors were created because it permitted the design of free-standing tents which could be erected without guy lines or stakes and these held up better in winds and were easier to erect and the fly would be more taut as the tautness of the fly was no longer a matter of how well it was guyed and staked out. So, the primary function of an integrated floor is to help with ease of pitching and less with protection from water below, which is why cheaper tents have floors but inadequate waterproofing of the floor. Cheers, - Martin

Thanks so much for sharing. It’s getting harder and harder to really find good places to camp with less people around. The Algonquins and Killarneys are wonderful but almost impossible to get into these days. I’ve tried deciphering the crown land atlas but it’s not “me” friendly

You can tell Canadians desperately try to sell the idea that camping in Canada is worth it because oh it’s so vast etc but in reality I’ve hiked and backpacked in Canada, the USA, Europe, South America, and Canada is the most pathetic excuse for enjoyable wilderness in the world. Having to use a dangerous amount of bug spray, extensive netting, extensive planning of the exact right time of year. You do realize it’s all stupid right? Save your money and get on a plane to somewhere with real wilderness and not nasty crappy bug infested stuff like Canada has. Outside of the Rockies Canada is terrible for backcountry enjoyment. Canadians just kid themselves because they have no better

So awesome, i just got a pack 12, do you happen to still use it and if you do what are the dimensions so i can make my own. Also do you think kevlar skid plates would be good on the pack 12? thinking of going to swift and getting those kits to put on my boat.
@PineMartyn
@PineMartyn Жыл бұрын
I do indeed use my Pack 12, all the time. I love it, whether I am using a double-blade or a more traditional single-blade, it's a joy to paddle. I didn't put skid plates on mine because I didn't want to add any excess weight and, while I do not baby my boats and am fine with scratches on the hull, I avoid ramming the shore when landing, so have never felt the need to install skip plates. It's really a matter of how rough you want to be with it, so you are the best judge of how you will treat your boat. Cheers! - Martin

Good question. I am still using mine. But, keep in mind, this design, with it's small wheels, is intended for carting your canoe along roads, lawns, flat trails, etc, and not over rocky, log-strewn portages when the canoe is loaded with gear. So, mine is still working fine, but I use it for it's intended purposes will within the limits that the materials can withstand. Hope this helps, - Martin

I can't decide between the swift pack or solo canoe. Have you ever fished out of both? I would think fishing out of the solo canoe would be better (seat a little higher up). Also how long does the pack seat take to dry out? I would hate seating down on that when it gets wet and stays wet.

I wouldn't sleep on large plastic inside my tent like that. It's an asphyxiation risk. It may be a minimal risk for a sober adult, but inebriated or for a small child that plastic inside the tent is an unnecessary risk. First off your not sleeping directly on the floor anyways you're on a matt of some kind so you shouldn't be getting wet regardless. If you're super concerned about it tho it's safer and more useful to have something like an emergency bivvy. I just can't imagine sleeping on all that plastic. Seems crazy to me, not to mention annoyingly noisy and messy when moving around.

@PineMartyn
@PineMartyn Жыл бұрын
We don't use bear bells, as we find them very annoying. We do call out ("Getaway you bears!) rather regularly, but when we are talking to one another (or talking on camera), that's more than enough noise to alert a bear of our approach. Thanks for the question, - Martin
