I am scared to build one of these because i fell like i am wasting a rare model kit if i mess it up.
@starportboatworks2 ай бұрын
Good news! These kits are abundant! I can help if you need/want. Before taking on a build, ask yourself, do you have the the time to take on a few hundred hour project? Second, do you typically finish long projects? -I don’t always accomplish my larger hobbies… It’s good to be honest with yourself because…. You COULD be into this boat for $1000 by the time you finish. Granted, there are definitely cheaper routes!! Weigh out all the options.

I went cheep. I used Envirotex LITE. I decided that I wanted a long cure time as a novice, and given that it won’t see daily water, I didn’t feel the need to spend the extra cash on “better” products.

Noticed you using a paint marker to highlight your wheel lettering. I've never tried this - what sort of paint pen are you using? How long does the paint last on rubber tires like that? thanks.
@starportboatworks5 ай бұрын
I believe it was Testors brand, but honestly, I believe any parts store paint marker would work. Yellow, Red, White etc. I know that there are “tire paint” markers, but Im pretty sure they are the same thing and likely more money.. -The life isn’t great on a daily driver. Especially compared to the real thing. But hey, on a Sunday cruiser, it looks awesome.

Great videos, and great progress! I am also in the midst of building two Dumas boats at the moment, they really are great models. Question for ya though... Seeing that you are also interested in full size antique boats, and also mentioned going to boat shows, have you gone to the antique wooden boat show in Clayton NY?
@starportboatworks8 ай бұрын
Thank you! Being from MN, I haven’t made it that direction to many times. No, I haven’t made it to that show. I have, however, seen the tall ships come into Duluth via the Great Lakes. I’ve also made it to, and entered into, a few classic power boat shows in my state.

Did you account for offset when setting the shaft?
@starportboatworks9 ай бұрын
I did not. As this is my first build I did not know that an offset would be necessary, nor did the instructions mention an offset. I guess we’ll see how it turns out.
@marklaurint74929 ай бұрын
How are you going to do the seat? My kit came with balsa blocks. Took me awhile to settle on how to make them look realistic.
@starportboatworks9 ай бұрын
As usual, I don’t think I’ll go a “purist” route. My kit came with balsa blocks. I was thinking about sanding the blocks to accent piping and pleats in the seat. Since Im in MN, Id like to pay homage to our Paul Bunyan roots and maybe find some Barbie Flannel fabric. Id likely spray adhesive the material on. -but im not sure just yet.

Polyester resin works great when applied correctly. I never use the cloth, I mix resin with styrene to thin and apply with a gun . Self leveling and easy sanding cause of the styrene . 5 coats sanding between coats with 400 wet and dry . Then 3 coats of good clear coat like Nason clear 497-00 . Wet sand with 2000 to get rid of dust and imperfections. Then buff with a mild compound at 800 rpm Perfect mirror finish. Tough and looks great after 10 yrs, like you just did it .Epoxy Sucks it's really yellow and is like sanding a car tire. N.F.G . When you shop for polyester resin make sure its pink in color and you don't even have to stain The pink resin enhances the Mahogany .At this point it's is easily savable with guidance .The biggest mistake made here was not getting all the air out of the cloth . There is a special tool for this .It makes the cloth disappear in the resin. The tool is made for this only and every good glass man will have one. I tried to load a photo but it wont take it. If you would like to see photos of my mahogany boats go to Facebook Chips Outboard Service in Pembroke ma and go to all photo's

Google poly resign it will not cure completely in air , without a wax additive or pva, something to seal off the air, I have built a number of full size boats using poly and when I started 20 years ago I found out the way you are. Epoxy will cure but poly wont

A follow up,...there is no need to coat the out side of the boat with resin. A good quality varnish is adequate. R/C boats don't stay in the water very long, not like real boats.

Any nicks in the cloth will disappear with a resin top coat. The main thing is removing any bubbles between the cloth and wood. That’s what I use the card for to push out the bubbles. A thin coat is all you need.
@marklaurint749210 ай бұрын
Had the same issue with a triple cockpit. But was working in 90+F garage! Had to strip and sand all the way down. It was a mess. Switched to epoxy after that. Z-poxy finishing grade is what I use now. Pretty fool prof and sands easy. I cut the stuffing box out and mounted/aligned, sealed with JB weld before glassing. Makes for a nice sealed and smooth look. Looks like you did a nice planking job.
@starportboatworks10 ай бұрын
Its looking like your Triple and my 49 are going to have similar stories.. I sanded and added a second layer of poly a couple hours ago, and I will be testing epoxy tonight. If I can do better I will. Its nice to know Im not the only one who has had this issue.

How did you measure your component amounts, weight or volume? Never worked with polyester resin before but sometimes with others volume measurments have lead to only partial cure due to not being 100% perfect ratios of components
@starportboatworks10 ай бұрын
Bondo listed a ratio of 1oz resin to 10 drops of MEKP. I used a 3oz graduated measuring cup and mixed 1oz. I stirred for 3-5 mins, making sure to scrape the bottom and sides.

Looking good! What weight cloth did you end up using? Fiberglass resin hardener to resin ratio can be tricky when applying at cold or hot ambient temperatures. Epoxy is a straight forward 50:50 whatever the volume. No glass cloth on the top? Another coat on the cloth and it will disappear.
@starportboatworks10 ай бұрын
Given time constraints, I opted to use Bondo brand fiberglass from the automotive section. I followed the ambient temp and mixing ratio but after 3 days and a light sand, the resin is still tacky. To make matters considerably more stressful, I don’t believe I saturated the cloth enough with resin and I am concerned that sanding and a second layer of resin, won’t hide the cloth. Given this Issue, I opted to Not fiberglass the Deck. Im still not sure what I’ll do for the bottom sides. 1. I should have ignored the developer and planked the bottom with the remaining wood. 2. I should have gotten West Systems epoxy like I had intended.

I’ve Built almost all of the Dumas Christ Craft line including the Typhoon. Have they changed the kits requiring bondo on the bottom? I haven’t seen your previous videos on this build so I might have missed this but The kit I used for this boat used mahogany on the bottom strips to the bow and I sanded to a point no problem. A few stealer strips may be need to fill any gaps near the bow. Whatever it’s worth, my hull finishing consisted of very light fiber glass cloth (deck and bottom) with at least 2 coats epoxy sanded between each coat. Next, the bottom paint, (I Used epoxy paint to prevent any compatibility issues), the water line, any decals, and finally followed by the cutwater and top side engine cover edge foil. 3 coats of epoxy follow, light sanding between each coat. I topped everything with a final coat of spray gloss polyurethane. These models come out beautifully with patience. Looks like you’re doing a great job..
@starportboatworks10 ай бұрын
Hey Mark, while I can’t speak for all the Dumas lineup, my model did do away with a mahogany bottom. Though I’m sure I could have managed with the leftover mahogany, to ply the bottom, being my first model build I did what the author stated. My model is a 1249, very similar to the 1702. They are the same year but the 1702 is a little shorter and designed to be a display only. Does fiberglass cloth come in different mil thickness? I was going to use Evercoat.

Nice looking project there! Next time why not try your hand at building the 1/16 scale Dumas 44 foot USCG Lifeboat. It's a 33 inch plank-on-frame replica of a 44 foot USCG lifeboat utilizing 1/4" X 33" balsa strips for the hull. I constructed one in my 20's. Installed twin 6 volt motors and used a 6 channel Futaba RC unit to operate it. For a while I had both motors independently controlled so I could spin the boat 360 deg. in its own length. Alas, I gave it away to my cousin for his 2 sons to enjoy.
