Thanks for sharing this past history video, because my father served with the NMU from 1945 to 75 after he was honorably discharge from the army in 1944. He also was a longshoreman at the Long Beach CA docks from 1934 until the draft in 1942. And he always told me that the NMU was a "rank & file" diverse union under the leadership of "Big Joe" Curran. And after his retirement in 1975 he had received a modest pension with benefits from the National Maritime Union every month for the rest of his life til 2012 (RIP "Pops")

This attempt by the NMU and ILWU was destroyed by the rats in the NMU who sold their souls to the shipowners and their bought and paid for government. They did this by red baiting and race baiting (the union was organized by the Communist Party and the union went on to break down racism on the ships and union halls) but the stooges wanted to run the union and not have to deal with struggle and political action. They just wanted a pie-card to eat well and sit on the asses while the sailors dues feed them. This was because the bosses and the government found that "No Coffee Time" Joe Curran wanted an easier life and no opposition from militant seamen. Curran went down in history as the biggest fink to ever hit the waterfront in the world. He gave the names of every leftist and militant seamen to the U.S. Coast Guard and had them ruled off the ships for their political beliefs.

Makes my heart ache with nostalgia. I grew up right there. My mother worked for a Feminist paper called "Majority Report". Offices on Sheridan Sq. They had a famous headline: "SPERM CAUSES CANCER".

Not sure how I ended up at his videos but they're now something I hold as sonhigh value and enriching. I also feel this kind of connection with him from seeing the world through his eyes. A true pioneer and trailblazer. A true selfless artist at a time where he wa surrounded by so many creations who were focused on themselves whether to good or bad effect. So grateful for this art

This is pretty much the Christopher St/Village that I came of age in back in the 70s. Probably shot a bit earlier than I was there regularly (~1975 -->). It also looks to be shot mostly during the day on a weekday. In the evenings and on weekends it was much less mixed and much more crowded with gay men. Many straight folks wouldn't go further west than 7th Ave during those times. So glad that Nelson shot so much film footage of the Village and that it has been preserved and shared!

It was a great place to grow up in. And in my teens and 20s, the nights there were the BEST! ;. )

Judging from the Tales From The Crypt movie poster in the train station, and the stage the Twin Towers where in, Nelson shot these films in 1972.

Always heard of Christopher Street. Figured it'd be somewhat like Castro St. in SF in the 70s. Its not.

Please upload more of his work - Dick Richards uploading the videos that he did on KZbin brought Nelson and his friends back to life. There’s so still much of his work not yet seen. It would be a disservice not to publish more of it after being in possession of his collection for so many years.
