The Takeda campaign really brings me back 20 years, when I first played and won this game as a kid. My memory might be spotty with how long ago it has been, but I recall being a bit too passive in the home provinces, while my southern armies migrated further south into Kyushu. When all the great powers in the north made things too difficult to hold on to, I made the hard decision of abandoning Kai and moved everything into Kyushu. My dad thought I was a fool and I very nearly went bankrupt, but it allowed me to make a massive push for land and helped me sweep across the rest of the map in a much more controllable manner. In other words, I became Horse Shimazu with extra steps.

Hey not bad for a first campaign! I agree that's its not ideal to play either the Imagawa or the Takeda by abandoning either of their northern or southern regions. Still, these are tricky factions to figure out for beginners. Have you ever returned to the Takeda and played a campaign where you held Kai and Aki?

Fatigue is definitely a big deal in Rome, but you can turn off fatigue effects in the options. If you're not noticing it, you might have disabled it by mistake. You can't change it back after a campaign has started though, the save will use the older setting even if you change it again

Hi Daniel! Episode 28 will have to wait until sunday but I did just finish my Oda campaign so that means I'll be able to spend the rest of my precious upload time on this Danish campaign! I'm glad you're enjoying this type of gameplay. Sometimes I worry that if I'm not always attacking then this game might appear to be boring. Which is the last thing I want to do! Still, I have to remind myself that I have a lot to learn about this game and the best way to learn these things is to take a methodical observational approach to playing these games and test out different mechanics so that I can find functional strategies. By the sounds of it, your strategy in many ways aligns with my own. As much as I don't want to develop a meta strategy that stays the same for every campaign, a powerful economy feels so liberating and it's very fun to play with. It provides a cushion the softens defeat in other areas of the campaign so that I can play more freely with experimenting with other more off meta ideas/units/army comps. The Egyptians will be my next campaign, so I hope you stick around or at least pop in later and drop some tips/tricks or analysis. I've practiced with their opening and they seem very straightforward but they have an interesting unit roster that I'm looking forward to fighting with!

Bridge baiting with just archers was interesting but highly successful as they were quick to retreat and quick to turn around and continue shooting . I decided with no more factions just to clean sweep from there on in. Following your plan was very time consuming but very rewarding. Their units of warrior monks were taken out by my archers. One of their warrior monks got into by back lines but as my army was hidden in the forest I sent all Arquebusiers at them as melee to hold them in place my Yari samurai caught up and sent them to their doom. After watching Christoffer's influence go from 1 to max, and then seeing Erik start off with 5, that seems really similar to what I would expect. I'm not sure exactly how many turns it took for Christoffer to get up to 9 or 10, but I'm guessing it jumped up 1 point or 2 per turn. So it seems like when a new king begins his reign, he's going to start with average influence - unless maybe you're doing poorly. In Viking Invasion, kings seem to have similar influence to their fathers when they start their reigns (again, because there's not many ways to increase that stat in the expansion). Side note, I don't think I've ever seen that Kalmar Union GA art, so that's a cool achievement!

They came back the next turn with a mighty army of 9 !? And again next turn with 6 soldiers. Do the Shamazu know something about Karachi that I don’t ? 1st church built 1551 The Game progressed from there generically. Every turn led to a Shimazu invasion of a few men. Funnily enough taking Awaji I could see around almost 4 stacks of Shimazu armies. They could have swarmed my forces in Awaji but continued as before meager attempts to take Kawachi I replicated taking every province in the order you did. When it came to taking Sanuki, Awa, Tosa Iyo my progressing was slow due to my constant building of anything that generates funds even farming in poor farming territories. But because of this I have numerous stacks. I currently have 11 full stacks and around 4 semi filled stacks. Each territory gained from Shimazu went without a fight - retreating every encounter. I eventually took Bungo in Spring 1584. There has been no danger or attacks from the west (you call north Japan) There’s my report btw still no cathedral I only have churches in KII, Yamato, & Kawachi. Kawachi is my main built up city

You have a historical character in Sir Bo Jonsson Grip at 44:16. He was a Swedish strongman and most important landowner with arguably more power and wealth than the king. At the height of his power Bo held one third of Sweden and all of Finland as either personal property or fief. Managing his estate after death became a major struggle between king Albert (also duke of Mecklenburg) and high nobility, leading the latter to call Danish-Norwegian queen Margareta for support. She did come, defeated Albert and betrayed the wishes of nobility by seizing Bo's estate, creating in effect the Scandinavian co-monarchy that was to become known as Kalmar Union.

I already got one. How the heck can I get a protectorate?? I've already read the online diplomacy guide on the Org written by Timur. And I've skimmed through anything else I could get my hands on but no dice so far! 🤷 I've laid siege to the Dacians last settlement, I've threatened to attack them, I've offered to give settlements, I've offered them money (I only have 5k in the bank but I put it all on the table for them) I even offered to give them every settlement that I own except for my capitol. Are there cultural biases in the diplomacy of RTW? I'm wondering if the Dacians are refusing my threats because I'm playing as the Julii and maybe they're predisposed to hate the Romans? OR am I just not rich enough to force this through? Maybe protectorates can be achieved by throwing tens of thousands of coins at them? I've even tried gifting them stuff, map information, settlements, payments, just to try to sweeten the pot. They won't except my gifts!! This is my first campaign while playing on easy btw so I'm also wondering if the difficulty has any role on the diplomacy in this game?

@@khanofsteppe1667 Oh duuuuuude, I am so glad you asked about protectorates! A few years ago I got serious about figuring out that little mechanic and found a LP series by a youtuber called InfernoCanuck. He was doing a campaign as Sparta for the Rise of a Persia mod for RTW, and he ended up getting a couple of protectorates, and I took an embarrassing amount of notes. Now I can do it pretty reliably. So here's my procedure: 0 - Nowadays I play on Medium campaign difficulty. I used to play on Hard but after playing some mods that used Medium as a baseline I've been converted: the AI just seems more reasonable in that mode. It's still dumb, and if you share a border with an AI faction you will be attacked eventually, unless (1) they are your vassal, or (2) they are at war with a faction that borders them, and they're too busy to attack you. But at least on Medium, you can get some longer, more 'reasonable' periods of peace, and the campaign will feel more balanced. (I should also note that as you know I tend to play 'lean' campaigns where I'm not training tons of troops or blitzing the AI, so YMMV) 1 - First step is to raise cash, because protectorates almost always cost a large initial outlay of money. My usual goal is to get 100k in the bank before I seriously go after a protectorate, but in vanilla RTW I think I've gotten some protectorates for as low as 10k or less. (I know it seems ridiculous to pay the AI, but it's worth it as I'll explain) 2 - The next step is to dominate the faction militarily. You don't necessarily need to get them down to their last city, but you *do* want to have all of their cities under siege, and preferably you want their garrisons to be small. You also want to eliminate all of their armies in the field. Blockade their ports for good measure. 3 - Once you've let the AI stew for a few turns, get one of your diplomats and have him either find a diplomat of the target faction, or lift the siege of their settlement. I usually set up the initial offer something like this: an offer of Map Information or of a small amount of cash (100 or 500 gold, say), with the demand side blank. See what they come back at you with. It will probably be some ridiculous demand, like all of their cities and a bunch of money. You can then counter-offer by demanding they become a protectorate, and *offering* 100k, or just your entire treasury. (Again, you might be able to go lower than this - 10k or 50k - or you might have to go higher. I've paid as much as 200k in the past.) 4 - If they accept, congratulations! You have a protectorate. But bad news! You're broke. Worry not though - next turn, you'll get all of that money back, plus whatever extra cash the faction had lying around. The way protectorates work is that they pay you anything above a certain amount of money to maintain their basic expenses. So the AI will take your money, but on the next turn when they're your vassal, they'll have all of that money that they'll then have to return into your coffers. Theoretically, if your vassal has good infrastructure and a bunch of rich cities, you can make a good amount of cash from them, and you won't have to worry about the expenses of garrisoning or improving those cities yourself - not to mention you don't have to deal with the corruption penalties on income, etc. It IS a ridiculous system. But you can make good money off a rich protectorate - although I've noticed that vanilla factions seem quite a bit poorer than in mods, for whatever reason. But above the financial aspect, the reason I love protectorates is that you can use them as buffer states. Making an AI faction your vassal really puts them in a submissive mood, and they tend not to expand anymore, which makes them a safe neighbor. If you want, you can give them territory in between you and some other faction that you don't want to fight - and because you don't share a border with that other faction, you'll almost never come into conflict with them. It's a great way to avoid getting drawn into long and expensive, tedious wars. The one trick to *keeping* your vassal is that you need to keep them diplomatically isolated from the other factions. If your vassal allies with faction X, and X attacks you, then your vassal may side with faction X and you just lost your protectorate! To avoid that situation, relentlessly attack your vassal's other allies (or make sure they're not in a position to attack you). The vassal will usually side with you if you strike the first blow. Anyway that's more than enough for now. I did put together a video on protectorates using the Fourth Age: Total War mod as an example, but the procedure works in vanilla too. (Once as Macedon I had like 5 protectorates - it was awesome) So you look like you're on the right track with Dacia - just keep throwing ever-higher amounts of cash at 'em! And when they do finally submit, consider tossing them a city or too to use 'em as a buffer state!

@@countmrvhs776 God bless you and your note taking 🙌 You're setting the bar too high by writing me and essay like this. If this is going to be the standard reply for all of your answers to my Rome questions then I'm going to owe you a new keyboard at some point 🤭 Knowing this, I'll have to focus on learning the games economy a bit better, unfortunately I was pretty much broke, and even after following your steps and offering multiple settlements and my entire treasury they still declined. But this all seems to be my doing and not the fault of the method you've prescribed. Also, the damned Brutii came in a achieved forcing the protectorate right after my senate mission had run out! 🤬 Like, I get it Brutii you're richer than god Still, I'm thrilled that this is a usable, functional mechanic. The InfernoCanuck might be the only internet source that has demonstrated this function (until you caught on). I'll have to pop on over to his channel and thank him and I'll also have to check out your protectorate guide as well. Just one thing, does the protectorate settlements count towards your victory condition?

@@khanofsteppe1667 Protectorate settlements *seem* to count toward your victory conditions. When you have a protectorate, you can see on your faction info screen that you are considered to have a number of provinces equal to the total of your owned settlements and the owned settlements of your vassal. BUT! In my experience - with modded games, FWIW - you will not actually trigger the victory video when you reach your victory conditions. Let's say you need 50 cities to win, and you have control of 44 cities while your protectorate owns 5. Conquering 1 more city should get you victory - but it doesn't. The victory video only plays when you yourself directly control 50 cities. Again, that's only tested with modded campaigns, but I kinda suspect it works that way in vanilla too. It's a bummer, but I would say you should give yourself the win if you ever find yourself in that situation! As for AI factions getting protectorates, I have no idea how that happens - they seem to be working on totally different rules from the player. Like, you'll see 2 factions go to war, and then on the very next turn, with no settlements changing hands, faction A will submit to being a vassal of faction B. They make it look too easy! One caution about offering settlements as part of a diplomatic deal, for protectorates or otherwise: over the years some folks have observed (& I have corroborated) that the AI is very sensitive to the position of your armies. Sometimes you want to give the AI a territory, say because you don't want to share a border with a powerful rival, so you want to give your ally a poor border city. If you try that, you need to make sure you don't have any troops standing around in the province. (They can be in the city, but they can't be inside the provincial borders in the field.) Otherwise, the AI will pretty consistently refuse, even if you also offer them a bunch of cash along with the province. So sometimes I suspect players are accidentally sabotaging their protectorate attempts by offering the AI territories where the player's armies are standing around. Also, the fact that quite frequently it seems to be necessary to *pay* the AI to take cities means that offering cities as part of a protectorate deal may have questionable value ... sometimes. Who knows. :P

@@countmrvhs776 Ahh okay, I might've had some troop in the provinces when I was trying to offer the protectorate. Still, I reckon I was just too poor to pull it off at the time. I'll be ready next time! And yeah that's a bummer that protectorate provinces don't count towards the province total. I guess I'll just have to 'convince' them to hand them back over to me once I'm ready for them. Next question: (at the risk of creating a never ending comment column) Do you have any issues with OG Rome crashing? You are playing Fourth Age in OG Rome? My steam version crashes roughly every hour. No framerate issues or graphics issues that I can tell. It doesn't crash upon startup or when loading into a campaign. Just once I'm loaded in and I've been playing for a bit it'll crash to desktop, sometimes while I'm on the strategy map and sometimes while I'm in a battle. I've been searching around for fixes. Some of the fix guides on steam seem very complicated so I figured I'd drop a line and see if you had any tips before I jumped into anything. I know playing the remaster is an option but that kind of defeats the whole point of my channel 🤷

I've only just begun to dive back into learning about history in the last few years and that is one thing that I've noticed, sooo many inter family conflicts! Family on family warfare was so pervasive throughout history that I'm actually curious as to what caused it to stop. Was it the Pope? Or Christianity? Or did it take a switch from monarchical rule to parliamentary rule to reduce fratricide?

You get random weather like that because here in the UK you get random weather like that. Wake up to the cloud, 10mins out the door that strange yellow globe appears, this is followed by a sever rain shower before settling down to... hail. The sun returns but with strong wind but it's the snow that greets you at lunch time that really takes the piss.

It's not the fact that CA added variable weather to MTW that bothers me. It's just that it's toooo erratic. Having the weather switch ten minutes into the battle is one thing. Having the weather switch while I'm still deploying my army is another.

I hope you like Viking Invasion campaigns because I have a couple of those finished!

Rebels retreat to cast;e for 2 seasons same scripted event in ISE I’m still following your campaign as an experiment, only capturing provinces you capture but doing everything else my way. Concentrated on maxing out farming in all province’s and border watch tower. Osawri now has a port KII instantly went for Building the Buddest temple and concentrated on maintaining full armies not one rebel attack they’re running scared.
