I think both versions look good in their own way of how they intended to look during their time of release. Both have different art style graphics and both have different style of soundtracks it really only comes down to personal preference however the only thing what I don't like what they changed in the remake is the Safari zone instead of a linear huge chunk of land where you can easily find a Pokemon you want on spot they'd changed it into a complicated customizable field environment where you have to change around a combination randomly to find a certain Pokemon you want which was really annoying.

In terms of Graphics Heart Gold is better but I prefer the soundtrack of the originals.

The N64 version is better

I like the original better and strangely it's because it's not as good graphically. It leaves A LOT up to your imagination. I feel like Firered does a disservice to the game by having sharper designs for trees, bushes, poles, attacks, pokemons themselves, which reduces the need for the brain to be creative to allow the world to make sense. Which in turn makes it obvious how old and repetitive the original game was. When I play the original, I often have dreams about Pokemons afterwards. That NEVER happens with firered.
