If Headbanger wasn't such an incredible song, Akatsuki would be my favourite song. Like you I prefer this performance, seeing Leda and Takayoshi come to the front seals it for me. Su just completely owns the stage, the emotion in her voice and her choreography convey perfectly the protagonist's love and determination. The composition builds and flows so well, it really is a perfect song and performance.

Haha great story! Akatsuki is one of my favorite songs of all time too! Budokan 2014 version is such a timeless classic, even though Budokan 2021 version was technically better. My first experience was a random KZbin suggestion for Gimme Choco. Needless to say, I was shocked and half hated on it but low-key enjoyed it. Then I saw the Doki Doki Morning MV, and amplified both feelings. However, Rondo of Nightmare, followed by Road of Resistance absolutely had me sold, and I fell straight down the Fox Hole ever since 😂. Just saw them live in DC this year, and it was every bit as amazing even with a smaller crowd vs the BluRays. Nice collection of Babymetal merch too! 🤘🦊

I'm 47, and already in my early thirties I realized I had gotten bored with contemporary western music. I initially started working my way back in time, trying to find older music that had somehow been overlooked or forgotten (or at least not played to death on the radio during my lifetime). But although I discovered a lot of interesting music, and found a new appreciation for progressive rock and jazz, I was painfully aware that I was just retreading old ground. I didn't want to be another grumpy old man who complained that modern music was all crap, and that everything was better when I was young. I knew on an intellectual level that there was more music being made than ever before, and people were not less talented. I was just reluctant to leave my comfort zone, and needed to force myself to expand my horizon. So I made a very conscious decision back in 2010 to listen to more international music, starting with French music. I had made the discovery that listening to songs in a language that I didn't understand that well kept me from being annoyed with stupid lyrics (which, for a long time, had prevented me from enjoying songs that were otherwise excellent from a musical standpoint)! And that realization made me more adventurous. Knowing that Japan is the third largest music market in the world, I decided to tackle them next. I had heard a bit of Japanese pop music over the years, and never really liked any of it, but figured there must be a whole other world of alternative music over there that never reached casual listeners in Europe. I did indeed discover a treasure trove of amazing music of all sorts, and almost completely stopped listening to anything but Japanese artists. Eventually, in 2012, I came across _Doki Doki Morning,_ which I loved. I absolutely dismissed the whole Babymetal thing as a gimmick, but the song was catchy enough that I did google them a bit. I saw the music video for _Ijime Dame Zettai,_ but didn't like that one as much. I also watched some Sakura Gakuin stuff, which I realized was not at all for me, and might be the reason I sort of forgot about Babymetal for a while. At some point I did go back and watch the videos for _Iine_ and _Headbanger,_ and those got added to a few of my playlists, but I still didn't take Babymetal very seriously. When _Gimme Chocolate_ blew up in early 2015, I loved that as well, and realized that Babymetal was not just a one-hit wonder. While I had never been put off by the obvious gimmick, it hadn't quite managed to see past it until then. I started digging deeper, found _Megitsune,_ and read there was an album on its way. And I haven't stopped listening since. That being said, I am not completely uncritical of Babymetal, and the decisions Koba has made along the way. I still think the first album is the best by far, and that maybe he never quite understood the genius of his own creation. Or at least he and I seem to disagree what the best and worst parts of Babymetal are. But nevertheless, the music is generally amazing, the girls are talented and charming. And I think the controversy around the group makes for very interesting conversations about genres, constructed groups, and what it actually means for music to be original, authentic and _good._
