Yes, I'd heard they set up in a tall stairwell for that. I didn't know about the mic arrangement, but I guess having two makes sense: one up close to get the "punch" of the kit, and another up high to get the "boom" from the stairwell, presumably.

More than the sound of the pickup is its magnetic field which pulls the strings. The mudbucker exerts an enormous pull that kills propagation of vibration!

Pretty damn close! Just needs a bit more of a kick in the pants. Gain, volume, or maybe move the pickup closer to the strings. But the bones of the tone are definitely there. It's amazing how good the old stuff sounds. And it was mostly just a guitar and an amp. People overthink tone these days. Keeping it simple has always been the best approach for me. Good playing and a cool video, thanks!
@ralphbeebytheelephantcolle16517 ай бұрын
Absolutely - I'm a great believer in simplicity. A good friend of mine once explained that a decent guitar and amp are like the core ingredients, and pedals, effects, etc are more like seasoning and spices - nice to have, but you can't make a meal out of them! Thanks very much for watching!
@CryptToneMusic7 ай бұрын
Pretty close for a cheap pedal, only thing I'd say is it needs more volume the amp has to be moving air. If you listen close to the album you can hear the weight behind the tone. Keep making cool vids like this!
@ralphbeebytheelephantcolle16517 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, I know what you mean about the "weight" of his tone - it's a shame there's no room/cab control on these pedals. Though I've also been wondering if it's double-tracked on the record, perhaps with a slightly cleaner guitar underneath...maybe time for another experiment!
@CryptToneMusic7 ай бұрын
@@ralphbeebytheelephantcolle1651 one of the things I've been learning recently about my favorite guitar tones is high volume is key, and a lot of times they're not as high gain as they seem. This is especially true with Misfits guitar tone like on Earth AD, which there's actually now an official misfits pedal for haha. But regardless of how good the pedal is it can't replicate the energy of Doyles wall of Ampeg amps in that room with Jerry's amps blasting right back at his with robo in between them. So much volume, vibration and mic bleed is going on not only is the loudness a key factor but all the instruments blurring together in a wall of sound. If you're interested in chasing the John Christ tone further I highly recommend Circle of Tone's Danzig video on it here on KZbin. He managed to nail down the exact amp and guitar and some other little things that get it super close. It's actually part of what made me a Marshall guy is Danzig and Samhain, just the sheer volume and that open sound that isn't overly gained out. It's just super evil sounding without being a full on chug tone
@ralphbeebytheelephantcolle16517 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip - I shall track down that video! You're dead right about the gain/volume balance - I hear so much distorted guitar these days that just sounds like a wasp in a jam jar, and lacks any real punch. And I know a good engineer can make a humble 1x12 sound enormous, but there's something about that 'live' feel - when all the musicians are feeding off each other's energy and that loudness, that's the (un)holy grail that makes those records so great.
