The swiftness and discipline are remarkably sharp. Just 10 years ago I was a rookie and didn’t know a single move, today I proudly say I am a master in 4 beautiful arts of combat. I hope more people find this video and get an interest in learning self defense in any martial arts academy.

both arts originated in Japan and share some similarities in teaching basic forms and techniques. Kata is a great way to practice blocks, stances and strikes alone.

Jiu Jitsu is not a grappling art, Grappling is a very small part of Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu originates from Japan and involves many techniques and forms.

I have seen comments on your ither videos criticizing you for not using the kei. I honestly think it depends on the application. The short sharp exhale is good enough for boxers, as far as increasing power goes. On the topic of alerting the surrounding people, a kei serves that function, maybe there is an intimidation factor. I have also had it on good authority that military applications of martial arts require as little noise as possible, so a kei wouldnt be recommended there.

Kei is used a not only a form of intimidation but also a way of exerting force and generating additional power from reaching deep within yourself and using at the precise moment of impact.

Hello Tyler, I just want to preface with a little anecdote. My little brother was freed from bullying by the style of Jiu Jitsu you practice. When he described his katas, he said that they usually told a story, for example the naga na kata in the Jiu Jitsu Foundation, which is a choreographed fight between two practitioners which demonstrates a number of throws. Is there a story behind this one? If so, and if you have the time, could you please explain it?

That’s and amazing story so glad your brother was able to free himself of the bullies. There is nothing worse then a bully except maybe a keyboard warrior (cyber bully)

The song boy in the box comes to mind. lol Box bedrooms, box bathroom, box living room, box everything. I would rather put my bed in the bar, it has way more space than an entire unit. Looking at it I am getting claustrophobic.

Well rounded form of self defense. Ability to strike with hands and elbows, kicking to keep attacker at bay. If you go to the ground, enough training to help prevail in that situation as well.

@TruPatri0t lol, Jiu Jitsu is one of the most evolving martial arts around, our form of Combined Jiu Jitsu is just that, some like the way they were taught and others are open to change. A true martial artist is open to all things but also able to understand what works for them and what doesn't. His comments dont mean much in the way of criticism, he doesn't train under our style. I have been training for 20 plus years and teaching for more than 15, I have nothing to prove at this point.

@Lenjou Everyone is different, Kiai can work and is distracting. The goal of a good Kiai is to get your opponent off focus while maximizing power. However when instructing in a video for my students to learn, I want them to focus less on me screaming and more on the techniques. Thank you for your comment.

@00EricHanson00 sorry for the late response, a kata is a way to practice a preset series of techniques. This allows you to perfect your technique and demonstrate your ability. There are many Kata's in all martial arts, not everyone does it the same way or in the same fashion, not one is better than the other and not one is wrong while the other is right. It is about how you learn and what you find interesting. We only practice 3 but there are many more.

Hey Tyler can you explain to me what Kata actually is? I'd always understood it do be demonstrations by an individual like this, but there are other videos out there titled 'Kata' that have two people tossing each other around. I'm confused. Starting Jiu Jitsu this fall! Can't wait!

Sensei, Pyne, with your permission, through you, may I offer: Kata is a formalized, choreographed practice of fundamental skills (strikes, stances, kicks etc) to cement the movements in your mind and body. They simulate attacks and defences against an imaginary opponent(s). If you see people doing "kata" with two people, they are likely demonstrating what those choreographed moves are meant to defend against with an actual Uke (opponent).

@priris - well congrats on your what ever belt you have achieved. What dojo do you attend? I am not quite sure why you are arguing with me about which Kata I teach at my school, however it is different then the one you are learning. That doesnt change the fact that it is OUR first Kata, and some Kata's differ from dojo's and Jiu-Jitsu styles.
