In my reliability/plant engineering experience, he is wrong about cavitation "almost always" coming from an issue before the pump, and that there's "no way to solve cavitation after the pump". You've never heard of recirculation cavitation and high temperature vaporization cavitation? Those are very common in the field and are almost always fixable after the pump. High head+low flow = High temps and high recirculation chances. Haha sorry for the rant, just felt that strong language was used and needed a reply.

In all cases we were using city water at ambient temperature. Let’s call it 70° F and because it is water, the viscosity is at or around 1 cPs.

In some cases where the discharge pressure is very high and forcing internal recirculation you will see cavitation. This is less common, but certainly a very real thing.

Our setup is a closed system so there is a fine line to be able to showcase cavitation in the way we were going for. Adding more water to the tank would absolutely lower the turbulence, increase NPSHa, and decrease the onset of cavitation.

What you are seeing in the setup is a closed loop, but certainly having more water in the tank will mean more NPSHa which will mean a lower chance of cavitation.

hi, you presented the concept very well. We pressurized the reservoir to get more NPSH and this could be another way to increase suction head. This method will create pressure in the lines returning to tank but is another way. What do you think?

Thanks for asking! The original manufacturer of the pump was a company out of Denmark called Lavrid Knudsen Mashinkfabrik. Many of the products they made used the initials LK. In this case, the H was added for a high-efficiency product pump.

I have a 2-1/2” diameter copper pipe. I need a Tri clamp copper ferrule that the pipe will fit into the ferrule. Do you sell this?

We are focused on stainless steel and nickel alloy tube and fittings, so we can not help with copper options. We know they exist in the market, often provided thru brewery and distillery equipment-focused suppliers. It may also be available thru Amazon.

It is true that air in the system can be problematic. Whenever NPSHa < NSPHr cavitation will occur.

Very simple explanation of what are quite complex charts. One comment - cavitation is not the formation of air bubbles, it is the formation of vacuum cavities at the pump suction, due to being unable to draw in sufficient liquid. The damage is caused when the vacuum cavities collapse again, causing shock loading of the pump.

is it still ok for using caustic sode which had been used for cleaning before?

Of course. But if your pre rinse step are to short and not efficient, then caustic solution take back remainings which are stay after pr rinse step. In this case you must often monitor conductivity in the caustic tank and clarity of solution. If you have very good and efficient pre rinse step, caustic will be clear :) Most important thing to use proper temperature in pre rinse solution. Regards and i invitie you to my chanel :)

Just saw that this was never answered. Yes, we reclaim a certain amount of the caustic wash that meets the right conductivity parameters. This fluid is often used in the next cycle's pre-rinse to help aide in organic material breakdown, shortening cleaning times and reducing chemical usage.

Hey, Daniel! There are a couple factors we consider when sizing the CIP vessels. 1. The total volume of the longest line circuit being cleaned by the CIP system. 2. The speed of the CIP supply pump and how quickly it can evacuate the CIP tank. 3. The rate of the makeup water as compared the CIP supply pump. If the supply pump can outrun the rate at which the makeup water can replenish the tank, then it will need to be sized larger to account for that additional loss.

Also, an additional thing we look at is space available and passage into the building. Sometimes we have to make adjustments to get the tanks into the building. Lastly is future-proofing. If they have space often a bit larger tank is not much more money. Gives them room later if they add circuits to the system.
