Hi Lilian, Are nursing students at Penn allowed to work for the 20 hours a week for international students? Are there summer programs in June or July for those joining the Nursing school where one can report to camous early for the programs?
@LilianChen
@LilianChen 5 ай бұрын
Hii I actually don't know too many international students in the nursing program but I do know a few that worked part time jobs. I believe it's the same regulations as any other undergrad at Penn. There are a few summer programs at Penn to support students from more low-income backgrounds transition that I think are free/subsidized(?), but there are also four pre-orientation programs that are just a few days to one week (Pennacle, Pennquest, Pennarts, etc) but those you have to pay for.

Hello Lilian! Thank you for giving us your honest thoughts about Penn Nursing! I am a sophomore in high school, and I want to go to Penn in the future and pursue nursing. I really want to build up my extracurriculars and I am wondering if you have any suggestions on what I could do? Thanks again!
@LilianChen
@LilianChen 11 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late response! I would suggest to do anything related to nursing/medical field! For example healthcare clubs at school, volunteering at the hospital or nursing home, or some summer pre-med programs on college campuses. These extracurriculars aren't just to build up your resume but it's to confirm for yourself whether or not nursing is something you want to seriously pursue. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi! I’m a senior in high school interested in applying to the dual degree nursing and healthcare management. How were your grades, extra curricular, and sat scores. What did you mainly talk about in your writing? Did you apply ed or regular decision?
@LilianChen
@LilianChen Жыл бұрын
Hi! I applied RD because there are a lot of local nursing schools in california (where I’m from) so I wanted to compare offers. I had a 4.0, 1530 SAT, 6 APs, and my extra curricular ranged from student government, FBLA, nursing home volunteering, and church volunteering. My essays were focused on a personal relational conflict I had in the past (common app) rather than based on a passion or extracurricular. My penn essay was focused on how my past related to nursing/business and how I would apply myself in nursing/business at Penn in the future. Hope that helps!

This is a lifesaver. Currently debating between UCLA and UPenn! I applied to biology for both- and unfortunately had a career change AFTER I submitted my apps. I heard that UPenn I can do an internal transfer from the College of Arts and Sciences into Nursing. How difficult would that be? Or is it even possible at all?
@LilianChen
@LilianChen Жыл бұрын
Glad this video was helpful :) At Penn you can definitely do an internal transfer. If you start talking with your advisor at the start of Freshman year, you can def finish in 4 years on a normal schedule. I know that at UCLA though they don't accept internal transfers into the School of Nursing, only external transfers (like 2 years community college then 2 years at UCLA nursing). Just something to keep in mind!

Hello, thanks for your insightful video. Considering your ethical morals, what is your opinion on usury and interest in the modern finance industry?
@LilianChen
@LilianChen Жыл бұрын
Thanks for leaving a comment! I will preface by saying I have never formally worked or done an internship in the finance industry. But as a general principle, I believe that usury is wrong. Loans are intended to assist those who are currently in need of financial resources, and interest can be used as a manner of enforcing that the the amount of money gets paid back in a reasonable amount of time, and that the borrower can exercise wisdom and discernment with their own financial resources. The Bible states very clearly in Proverbs 22:16 that oppressing the poor will lead to eventual poverty. When it comes to the modern finance industry, there is never a "win win" situation. Someone gets taken advantage of, someone gets an advantage. It is the desperation for more money and power, which is termed as a a "root of all kinds of evils" in 1 Timothy 6:10 that leads to this behavior. The recent falls of Silicon Valley Bank, the Wall Street recession in 2007, and even the economic downturn of the tech industry reveal that we cannot put our hope in money and the accumulation of it. Furthermore, those who have the advantage and oppress others will one day be called to account for their deeds. If we are blessed with resources and financial security, we have a responsibility to steward these resources well-towards things that have an eternal benefit, not temporary worldly gain. Long answer, but a big reason why I had to spend a long time determining my future career path. I struggled with the ethics of the corporate world, but even with nursing it is difficult, knowing that the healthcare system (+insurance and pharmaceuticals) are intended to make a profit off of everyone... which is why salaries for healthcare professionals are so high compared to other countries. Thanks for taking the time to ask!

So refreshing to hear a conversation where practical insight is intertwined with the subject of faith. People underestimate the amount of ethical conflict students can face when considering careers in finance, and making a decision about a school based on those aspirations. Very helpful video, and it is relieving to see someone taking into account more than just prestige and salary when talking about careers and universities.

Hi, so I watched quite a few channels on here and could not really find the answer, so here it goes: after the standard clinical rotation, do you get to pick any specialties? If so, how many? I read that you could pick your top 3....if that is true, and there are too many requests for not enough spots, do you get picked based on your grades? Thank you for your time, and good luck!
@LilianChen
@LilianChen 2 жыл бұрын
So the standard clinical rotations are: OB, med-surge, geriatrics, psych, peds, then community. For your final leadership rotation, you can choose between any of them, but there are limited spots. I unfortunately did not get placed where I wanted, because the spots I chose (Peds and ICU) were high demand. I think you can rank 7-8 spots but you have to be specific about the floors (ex: Pediatric ICU, or pediatric emergency department, etc.) The spots were chosen supposedly based on GPA (but I'm doubtful of this). Let me know if you have any other q's!
