I always loved the original trilogy. Especially how life like and magical Yoda was as a character. He seamed so alive in every scene. CGI just cannot replicate that lifelike realism. Greetings from Reykjavik, Iceland.

The illusion of Yoda in ESB was a marriage of the talents of several extraordinary contributors; my boss Stuart Freeborn for his vision, sculpting, innovation, and non radio control mechanics; Wendy Midener for her traditional puppet building skills, her very significant influence on the character development, and her puppeteering; radio control specialists Ron Hone and Dennis Lowe for the r/c versions needed when a shot did not allow the puppeteers access; myself for molding, casting, chemical processing, non radio control mechanics and assembly; Frank Oz and his unsung team of puppeteers Cathy Mullen, Wendy, and David Barclay who's sensitive puppeteering brought Yoda to life so much better than I can ever do single handed in this video. It was a privilege to be a part of the world's first animatronic superstar and it inflenced everything that came after.

I absolutely love stories about how pre-CGI film effects were made. I am not slighting the CGI artists- I know its a ton of work too, but there is something about having to work with the limitations of materials in the real and achieving amazing results that intrigues me. The same is true of the stunts and other aspects. "We did it all in CGI" just doesnt hit the same way.

Nick -I thought youd appreciate my own Krull story! I saw the film in the US theatre as a very young kid and when the Beast awakened to pull the Glaive out of his wound... my parents said I actually became scared straight.. like I went stiff as a board.. 45 degrees in my movie theatre seat. The trauma wiped the moment from my memory mostly but my parents preserved the moment for me ; ) yes.. scared straight is a v real phenomena -so thanks for that : ))

For whats interesting to the story is Ynir (played by the late Freddie Jones) tells about The Beast's species made a trade with Rell's species about giving foresight to the future to the antagonistic species in exchange to the cyclops' race to foreseeing their own deaths in their fated future. Theres some interesting subplots in Krull. Its a shame it didnt went successfully on the box office.

Hi Nick - I’m an aspiring puppet-maker, and was curious how exactly you made the inside of Yoda’s mouth - it looks as though the head is casted wholesale from a mold. Is the inside of the mouth a separately casted piece that you attached after the fact? Do you have some sort of “mouth insert” in the mold when you cast the head to begin with? Thanks!
@NickMaleyYodaGuy Жыл бұрын
the inner mouth was made separately
@WhovianHedgehog Жыл бұрын
@@NickMaleyYodaGuy How do your fingers stay in place when you are controlling the mouth? In puppets I’ve made I’ve had an insert lining that keeps your fingers in place - is this the same in Yoda? Thanks so much for responding!
@NickMaleyYodaGuy Жыл бұрын
@@WhovianHedgehog Making a quality animatronic puppet is a balance of many elements. How you attach to the mouth is dependent upon how the skin is made, how flexible and how tearable it is, how thick the lips are. Telling you how it was done for yoda won't be relevant if your material, thicknesses, tensile strength and weight are different. I will say that each finger had a different function and therefore was connected individually.
@moisestorres9618 Жыл бұрын
It’s a shame the “New Yodas” don’t look anything closely realistic as your puppets!
@NickMaleyYodaGuy Жыл бұрын
there are a lot of elements that effect what you finally see on screen, obviously the sculpt (which was pretty good foe Ep VIII as best I can tell) to the way the puppet is fitted to the hand inside, and the digital layers they put over and behind it. When the director of the shot is not the creature builder it can end as a mashup

Fantastic interview and book! Thank you for sharing! I’ve got 1 question regarding the costumes: Who designed the Bounty Hunter Dengar? John Mollo or Joe Johnston? I have yet to find any concept sketches online or in behind the scenes books.
@NickMaleyYodaGuy Жыл бұрын
I don't know that anyone did, William. I did the scared face and there was no reference. I SUSPECT the character was assembled from stuff lying in wardrobe depatment. At the time it was "need some bounty hunters. What do you have?" Bossk was one of 5 "crockers" heads that we has previously made for Mos Eisley
@kirkanos77 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Mr Maley! There’s so many legends stories written about the character beyond the 2 brief scenes, I was wondering what the real ‘behind the scenes’ development story was. Nobody seems to have first hand knowledge… nobody that’s still around that is.

I think the slayers worked very, what would you have liked them to be like and Etsy was the worm in the brain all about?
@NickMaleyYodaGuy Жыл бұрын
I think Steven Grimes basic design was good. The problem for me was that they had to go on burley stunt men who were, in many cases, broad and chunky which made them look more like men in suits than I would have liked. The worm into the ground? I believe that was so they could come out for the sequel that was never made.

Krull is magical and one of my childhood favourites. The Beast is still as scary in the still shots and the concept art. The gross vein like things on the back of the head freaked me out the most. I know you wish we got to see more detail as the audience, but the Beast's main part felt great to me. The way it was shot kept me feeling claustrophobic and dying for more of a reveal (in the good way like Predator) of it's horrific form. My absolute favourite was Cyclops though. As odd as it sounds, he reminded me of my Grandad in his size, his code, and his loyalty at any cost. I still wish for a different ending for him each time I watch it. What an awesome video for an awesome movie. 10/10 👌
