Enough of the productivity myth. A haircut in China cost 5 USD compare to the 20USD in united state. Would anyone think the American baber is 4x more productive?

I think all the debaters failed to understand development economics. GDP the nominal kind is a fun comparison matrix, but would any economist say Singapore or Luxembourg are the most productive countries in the world? If so, what do these countries produce? that would make them all that important to the world? But I do agree that China economy is going through structural changes. It needs to move away from just manufacturing for export. I do not believe construction and real estate will disappear, it may go from 27% to 20%. There will always be urban renewal, transportation infrastructure, new energy infrastructure, military infrastructure.... No country has zero construction so it is never all going away, a false impression given by so many "economists " China is a middle income country now but it is on aggregate technologically more advanced than all countries in the world except for the US. The middle income trap is the inability to move up the value chain, raise personal income and currency value. With higher personal income comes consumption. We can all agree that China has moved up the value chain but a very large part of its population is still considered poor, a potential for growth or social unrest? Geopolitically, it is not in China's interest to be a high income nation. China is not a self-sufficient nation, it needs to sell in order to buy. China's future lies with the global south as the west decouples. It need to complement, not dominate the global south.

The format, although entertaining was too rushed and as a result superficial. The problem with the western analysis of China is that the Chinese economic system is not the same as those in the West.

Manufacturing/export has died due to decoupling and thats not coming back any time soon. Real estate bubble has burst and infrastructure investment has been oversupplied and is not coming back any time soon. Domestic consumption is in the gutter and isn't coming back any time soon. The birthrate has collapsed and this is not being reversed any time soon. Xi's hostile attitude allowed to West to see the CCP for what it is and this broken trust isn't coming back any time soon.

Someone needs to point out productivity comparisons when not carefully done are largely meaningless. To say that large portions of the Chinese state sector has low productivity is wrong. These sectors have low internal profit margins. Their productivity is unknown and difficult to track down. When we measure real productivity we can only compare accurately apples to apples. That is when we compare the real output per real input. We can say factory X is more productive than factory Y if factory X takes less inputs to produce more outputs than factory Y. The problem arises when we simply compare the monetary value of inputs and outputs. A comparison of the monetary values is not a comparison of productivity. For example a personal bowl washer for a Billionaire might make $3000 for washing 6 bowls in a day. While a restaurant dishwasher might make $30 washing 600 bowls in a day. Is the restaurant dishwasher 600/6 = 100 times more productive than the personal bowl washer (1) or is the personal bowl washer 3000/30 = 100 times more productive than the restaurant dishwasher (2)? This is a fundamental economic concept one has to understand to understand making productivity comparison. What is implied by the discussion of the economists here and what if often misunderstood by the public is that (2) is the correct way to look at productivity. That is wrong, (1) is the correct way to look at productivity. This is because monetary value is not limited by real factors. The personal bowl washer can have any arbitrary monetary income, $3000, $30,000, $3,000,000. Trying to measure his productivity by monetary terms is meaningless. His productivity can go up or down arbitrarily as his income goes up or down arbitrarily based on things that have nothing to do with the real economic production process he is involved in. For productivity to measure anything meaningful it has to be measuring real inputs VS real outputs not monetary values of inputs and outputs. With that out of the way we can see that there is no evidence that China has a productivity issue. When it comes to China there are two types of products. Ones it can make and ones it can't make. For the products it can make, it makes virtually all of them more productively than anyone else. For the products it can't make, it eventually learns to make them (usually in record speed) and make them more productively than anyone else. These observations have been repeated time and again, product after product, technology after technology. Furthermore there is no evidence that state run firms have low productivity. Low productivity means they take more inputs and create less outputs. There is no evidence that they do that instead the evidence is almost always that they overpay for inputs and undercharge for outputs. In other words they are just productive entities that take on monetary loses to subsidize the rest of society. That then is not a matter of low productivity but a matter of social choice. Its funny how people question that the Chinese don't have a social welfare system but what do you think these state run firms are? They are the Chinese version of the social welfare system.
@revolution2847
@revolution2847 Жыл бұрын
Profit margins are low because demand has been insufficient. SOEs as social welfare is downright dubious, most of them do not produce consumer goods directly, and they factor in household behaviour very marginally. This is just not how social welfare is ubiquitously defined, i.e., direct state intervention in produce distribution, including free healthcare, pension, social assistance... Bottom line is this: so long as China has enough food and energy, it can offer SOE and civil servants posts to all labour force, after all North Korea does not have to care about unemployment or about GDP growth for that matter, but it just means the country's economy won't be dynamic, creatively destructive/innovative, and its national security forever compromised
@revolution2847
@revolution2847 Жыл бұрын
dismantling SOEs would devastate mercantile ecosystem and ensuing privatisation would rewrite social contract, but China is on a path towards a vicious cycle of big government + stifling regulation + bloated bureaucracy + fiscal indiscipline... No matter the GDP growth, China will be disappointing to global investors, contributing insufficiently to world growth, and even more security-minded. The easiest way out is to enforce fiscal discipline on local government, transforming it from ruler into service government
@georgesiew6203
@georgesiew6203 Жыл бұрын
@@revolution2847 Here you simply fail to understand the concept of, "it doesn't matter if its a black cat or a white cat as long as it catches mice.". Producing consumer products is the last thing that China needs for improving social welfare given the country is awash in consumer product production capacity. The entire point of the SOE's are to maintain control of a key pillar of the production chain and then secondarily to provide good jobs to people to teach them something and allow them to invest in their selves and their families. The limit the prices and guarantee the minimum quantities of key source and intermediate products within the economy and they ensure the existence of the backbones of a well paid work force that can raise the next generation of productive labor. SOE as social welfare is a way more effective system of social welfare than the Western Social Welfare state. The western social welfare system breeds dependent and lazy populations with zero discipline and no skills development. People on welfare or social disability rarely invests in themselves or their kids. They don't learn anything from the process of getting handouts and they also suffer profound crisis of lack of dignity and purpose. Western workfare programs are even worse with extremely low wages that don't allow for their participants to invest in themselves or their kids while at the same time somehow managing to humiliate and destroy the dignity of the participants even more. The Chinese SOE system is a direct response to the rottenness of the western social welfare state.

@@revolution2847 You are just spewing a bunch of empty word salad. Big government, stifling regulation, bloated bureaucracy are all the equivalent of buger-face or snot-nose from playground name calling. WTF is big government if not for a 1 trillion dollar defense budget? WTF is the 401k pension system mandated by law other than a bloated bureaucracy? There is no point to use these words unless you have real objective rulers for measuring all these things which you don't. One thing you do get right is of course China will be disappointing to global investors. China exists for the benefit of the Chinese not the global rentier class. If you are a monopolist or rentier or generational wealth fund for the wealthy then you better come to the realization that China is going to rip you off at every opportunity.

Massive infrastructure spending has created massive debt due to poor "productivity" of this spending: if I build a HSRailway to Xinjang and only a couple thousand travellers use it, the investment is only a good one on paper: the province GDP is up but the line loses too much money.

If they were in today's China, they'd be in about the same place in life, as successful leaders, entrepreneurs, etc. They came to America because they believed in America's values and ideals. Understanding both countries, they recognize that cooperation, not conflict, can best benefit both countries. So no, this isn't Chinese propaganda. This is a Chinese American point of view, based on knowing the actual realities of both countries.

A few minutes ago I listened to your comments on affirmative action. It seems that once again the Asian community has shown great tenacity and the ability to exploit opportunities to the fullest. I listen to you describe being intimidated and starting off with a joke about your wife. Being afraid and intimidated was a constant part of my life. For decades I was the recipient of relentless state-sponsored terrorism. I also had to relent to state sanctioned terrorism in the form of racism in banking, employment, and housing. The constant threat of police brutality is a persistent reminder of just how vulnerable I am. Asians started to come to America in the 1970s at a time when America was successfully concluding its destruction of black businesses. Through a process of REDLINING this country condone the destruction oh black businesses. As Asian started to come to America they were welcomed with open arms by the same institutions and agencies that participated in the destruction of the black business community. The banks, the government support network, and insurance companies were eager to help Asians take over commerce in the black community. Black business had been the lifeline for black communities in a racist America. Black dollar circulated up to 20 times in the black community before leaving. After REDLINING and the influx of Asian immigrants those black dollars now leave the community everyday at sundown. Black dollars now go to develop immigrants and mostly Asian community and they are willing to kill to protect every last dime. The Asian Community is one of the most successful communities in America. Asian came with their culture, language, history, names, and personal beliefs intact. Key elements that were stripped away from black people Generations ago. The Asian Community has become one of the most successful communities in America. Black dollars financed their rapid assent to the middle class. There has never been racist cops roaming the neighborhood looking to destroy the futures of Asian children as they were in the black community. Now Asians have pressed the issue that they are being discriminated against by the government mechanism that tried to remedy hundreds of years of exclusion and the ongoing Relentless attempt to undermine black progress. America is a country where if you get a great education and work hard you can accomplish anything in less than a decade. The former slaves prove that. Starting with an extreme disadvantage of being a Slave many were entering the middle class just Ten Years After slavery. Black children outperforms why children in school. The former slaves were becoming congressmen, Senators, scientists, doctors, Bankers, Engineers, nurses, teachers, professors, and entrepreneurs. Unfortunately this progress caused a great white backlash. The Compromise of 1877 actually made it dangerous for a black person to even become successful. Successful black people were routinely tortured and murdered. Beautiful middle-class black communities were literally wiped off the face of the map and the residents murdered and pushed into Mass Graves. With the victory in the Supreme Court ending affirmative action once again Asians and racist whites have succeeded in undermining black progress. Next to abortion affirmative action was the main reason the Republicans were willing to cheat, lie and deceive to stack the Supreme court. The sentiment is to make America great again by undermining black progress. I'm tired of fighting let the Asians into Harvard. If necessary don't admit any more black people. Admiral Yamamoto went to Harvard and went on to plan the invasion of Pearl Harbor. Congratulations

Koplan and Frieden are former CDC directors and belongs to the "tribe" as does the current director Walensky . Koplan was caught “misappropriating” Congressional funds and hiding the expenditures through convoluted book-keeping. Koplan resigned under criticisms over how his agency handled the alleged anthrax attacks after 911. Frieden pled guilty to disorderly conduct , he faced misdemeanor charges of forcible touching, third-degree sexual abuse and second-degree harassment.
