In a 2-part interview with Mike Curry (part 1 starting at 4:30), it's on KZbin, Geddy said he used the Rickenbacker on Red Barchetta and the Jazz on Tom Sawyer. When asked about Limelight he said "Limelight is the Rick I think".
@kevinsheppard23125 күн бұрын
I remember that interview and that had me convinced it was the rick, but with all due respect, Ged has not had the best recollection as it was rightfully a long time ago. For example he says now that the first time he used the Jazz was Tom Sawyer but in a 1980 interview he said he used the jazz on about half of Permanent waves. You can check on my channel, I just uploaded a bass focused version of The Spirit of Radio and it speaks for itself! Not to mention in his book he also adds that he used the Jazz on Vital signs (I nailed that tone in my MP Jazz Bass tone video). The next occurrences would be Digital Man and New World Man but I've never seen him mention that. Jus my two cents, Cheers!
@MooreBass5 күн бұрын
@@kevinsheppard2312 Thanks for the info, Geddy keeps us guessing! And add to it during those albums, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals he used the Rickenbacker in concert! I went to all of those concerts during those years and I don't recall the Jazz bass being used, he may have at some point but I don't remember that being the case. It's interesting how his tone from those albums went away for next 3 albums beginning with Grace Under Pressure, with the switch to the Steinberger and Terry Brown was no longer producing, his tone was very thin and flat, his style was there but the tone went away. People often say tone is in the fingers, and that's true, but not 100% as evidence from the Steinberger days.
@kevinsheppard23125 күн бұрын
@@MooreBass That’s awesome you saw them! I like to say that your character, style and identity as a musician is in the fingers but there’s so many parts that shape the ‘tone’. Compare Caress of steel to Roll the Bones haha. Very different sound but very busy playing!

this definitely has that signature scooped jazz tone. the ricky has more of an upper midrange growl and less of a clank. also a woodier low end, the subs don't extend nearly as much as a jazz - not as woody as a P bass though. i like to describe jazzes as having a more "hi-fi" sound compared to something like a ricky or a P. this is that for sure
@Sheehy2237 күн бұрын
Funny enough I actually had myself half convinced that this song may have been his Rick 4004, but nope this makes it fairly obvious that it's the '72 Jazz, very similar tone to Digital Man as far as I can tell. But I noticed on the comments of that isolated track that some people are still convinced that Digital Man is a Rick, like what the hell do we know right 😂

@@Sheehy223 With all due respect to them I don’t think they’ve ever played a rick haha
@Sheehy2237 күн бұрын
@@kevinsheppard2312Certainly not. It seems Ricks are still pretty wildly misunderstood by the majority of bass players. Two of these big bass channel guys demoed Rick-O-Sound by plugging two mono jacks into both inputs of a Rick at the same time and apparently didn't notice that the same signal was going to both of their amps. I blame Billy Sheehan for that 😂
@kevinsheppard23127 күн бұрын
@@Sheehy223 That’s embarrassing 🤣. Exactly. Especially what kinda drives me nuts is when people (successfully) split the pickups and then claim it’s some completely different sound cause it’s “stereo”. If you've ever played a Rick, you'd know that this is not at all characteristic of its tone, and it just sounds like his his Jazz. I figure Entre Nous and Different Strings are also the Jazz as well. He said in a 1980 interview he used the Jazz on about half of Permanent Waves.
@showdonttellyyz7 күн бұрын
I’ve long felt EN, TSOR and DS were the Jazz. I see we agree. Sounds like the bridge pickup was a little more present in this recording than later ones to me? Seems to have a bit more of that bridge pickup bite to me.
@kevinsheppard23127 күн бұрын
@ Sheeshy223 who also commented on this video said he found an article where Geddy explained how he always had a weak bridge pickup. So apparently if he wanted a traditional jazz sound he would lower the volume of the neck pickup to achieve that scooped sound. That being said, the tone on MP would be both pickups 100% with the neck naturally overpowering the bridge. In my MP tone video I was able to get that effect! I also found a rare photo from le studio during the PW sessions where you can see the jazz in the corner and one of the pickups is rolled off a bit confirming the idea!
@showdonttellyyz7 күн бұрын
@@kevinsheppard2312 I feel like I’ve long known about the bridge pickup being weak. But that was purely internet heresy. Sounds like it was probably holding some truth. One of the most off this planet, style playing. I would look at their pics, on the album inside. And say “ who writes this way, they are Aliens” Geddy’s reggae style bass line, is bad ass. Alex always had chord passages that painted colors. My eventide I can get the exact chorus he used on this album. Unreal shit. Geddy doesn’t even write bass lines as mind blowing on the later years. I wish he would have gone back to this style.
