Peter McKenna was one of the V/AFL’s best forwards in his career and he also became a great commentator on Channel Seven for many years.

And those were the days when a team could kick 20 goals and still lose the game.

In fact, five weeks before this game North Melbourne and Sydney scored 210 aggregate points in a half! Yet the following week the Swans amd Bulldogs scored 70 aggregate points in a full game, with Footscray kicking the lowest score against the Swans for 36 years! This contrast has always made the 1991 - and even more 1989 - seasons so interesting to me. 1991 though is particularly instructive because West Coast, whose sheer speed made them invincible on the dry grounds of autumn, proved beatable when wetter conditions reduced their speed advantage. Nowadays it would be much easier for a team to finish 25-0, as West Coast looked certain to do while the weather remained dry, because the variation in conditions has been so largely eliminated.

Deservedly makes the list but to me was still an underrated player that never seemed spoken of as highly as he really deserved. A team of Michael Tuck's would have beaten a team of Leigh Matthews IMO.

I cannot see why one would say Rehn had “luck” if he missed virtually three seasons and prevented a potential Crow dynasty. The Crows’ performances during this era stand as proof - even before the fact was made emphatic by Docklands and the poleward expansion of the subtropical arid belt deep into formerly humid parts of southern Australia - that ground rationalisation was (and is) making the AFL more and more like basketball in that unusually skilled tall people (exceedingly rare in the population) as Rehn was are utterly irreplaceable.

Went to that game, in one of the few Collingwood matches I actually saw in the 1990s. Richmond scored many behinds that day, and should have won by more. I remember that Mark Merenda missed a sitter for Richmond in the last quarter of that match.

While West Coast did win 2 of the last 5 games after the Sydney Swans loss in 2001, the Eagles sacked their coach Ken Judge after 2 very disappointing years in 2000 & 2001 where he coached the club. The Eagles only won 7 and a half games in 2000 & won 5 in 2001 after making the finals in every year in the 1990s. Fortunately for the Eagles things turned around in 2002 and made the finals again which eventually led to the 2006 premiership. Approximately a quarter to a half of the Eagles players who played against Sydney that day in 2001, played in that premiership win in 2006, ironically against Sydney!!.

I knew in time that seven network had both pay/subscription rights and FTA rights. graphics were better than sevens in terms of score graphics. iam surprised about Garry Lyon being on commentary. BTW its still dry his style of commentary even when Nine had the rights from 2002 to 2006. I didn't know Dermie called games before 99.

The second last time a team in VFL/history that a team only kicked 1 goal in a game - in July 2009 Fremantle kicked 1.7 (13) against Adelaide's 19.16 (130).
@guodade22397 жыл бұрын
Indeed it’s the second-last time a team kicked fewer than three goals in a match - the last score of two goals was Melbourne’s 2-8 (20) in the opening round of 1991 against a seemingly invincible West Coast defence. Before the weather broke up, it looked odds-on West Coast would go 25-0 (when that was more improbable than with Docklands minimising unpredictability from weather) as they were just too hard and fast for anyone to counter their defence and score enough points. However, when the weather broke up their speed advantage declined and Hawthorn’s attacking style was much more valuable.

That’s something they need to do, as well as to stop using the whistle so much after a mark except when awarding a free for wasting time. It may be that over-dry grounds due to global warming and Docklands (à la covered pitches in cricket) make time wasting inevitable, too.
