How did you account for cogging torques? Does the system have to be calibrated for individual motors?
@scottbez1
@scottbez1 Күн бұрын
This particular motor has basically no cogging torque, so there's actually nothing special being done about cogging besides finding the right motor!

How were these displays control back when they were popular. Every article talks about the theory, but not the practice. Do you have an old controller to show off? That would be really educational. Thanks for this demo.

I've never done a project like this and don't know if I have the time to learn and do it sadly. Is there any comparable product available to buy? Especially the magnetic and programmable haptic feedback? I wasn't able to find anything that would connect via USB and isn't integrated in a bigger device that costs a couple hundred bucks.

Does it skip if you move it fast? Like, if you put your finger at the software marker, zip it left and right very fast, does the marker end up still under your finger or has it lost some of the movement? That always pisses me off with software defined knobs

What is the lower pin was motorized so it would move back for a "quiet mode", and forward again for best appearance. (EG. for the new $3k home displays)

I just want this knob on my desk. Not to control anything. But just to play with. It looks so satisfying just to cycle through the different modes.

Me: That is legitimately the coolest knob I've ever seen in my life. They should use this in every new product from here on out! Manufacturers: You want us to spend $30 per unit on an unnecessary upgrade? Keep dreaming.

Fantastic video. This reminds me of the control knob on BMW's first generation iDrive system. While it did not feature a display like yours does, it did have software defined haptics including increment 'clicks', end stops when reaching the bottom of a menu, etc... and it even made note of how many turns you would try to force it past the end stop, and reverse that same number of turns at high speed when the knob was released (someone in their dev team had fun with that). Sadly they discontinued the haptic feedback on cars post 2007 because apparently it unnerved some users (facepalm). Anyway I've been looking to recreate a similar interface ever since I sold that car (2006 BMW 130i). Thanks for the inspiration!

Scott, you need to bring this to market or find a partner that can. I saw your videos on this years ago, and there still hasn't been something like it available. It has so many use cases and I can imagine it being used a ton by creatives, WFH, smart home enthusiasts, music fans, and movie/tv lovers just to name a few. The possibilities would be endless if it had integrations like the Elgato Stream Deck products. I know that you open sourced this (huge props), but a ton of people like myself don't have enough time / aren't smart enough to make anything of it and would be willing to pay top dollar for it prebuilt. Cheers!

Hey, this concept could be great in the world of IoT devices - Do you have any word on power consumption? Could this work in a AA device with moderate use for over a year?
@perspectivex
@perspectivex 25 күн бұрын
although I don't really know about this device in particular, I've done a lot of playing around with electronics. The data sheet they link for the sparkfun motor they recommend says no-load current of 0.11A, 110mA, then there's a display (I found a similar lcd 1.28" one that claims 31mA) and the NanoFOC DevKit controller (I'm guessing similar when idle more when making motor torque), one of their suggested mag encoders has "No power-down or low-power options". I'd guess this whole device consumes at least 150-200mA while operating. So...AA batteries in series (I guess it would need 3 at least but then you also have a voltage regulator/buck/boost power to consider) but not parallel, typical capacity 2000-3000mAHr implies about 10hrs of constant use? I think that's probably generous for battery operation but maybe I'm wrong.
@perspectivex
@perspectivex 25 күн бұрын
in fact the video creator scottbez1 actually mentions power consumption in a comment "This draws somewhere between 2 and 4 watts when resisting motion". I think it runs on 5V so that would imply something like P=IV -> 400-800mA in that state.
