He dont sound very cockney tbh, hes pronunciation is pretty good. But I can still tell hes from eastend by his tone. I was born and bred in Hackney in 1972, we wernt really speaking slang as such, but saying that i still use bits of it today without even realising. My pronunciation is pretty bad, and I've felt its held me back from time to time, alot of people think you sound thick. Ive tried to speak better queens, but it comes across fake, anyway im 50 now, so eff it lol

One thing I've noticed is people saying: speak slow (instead of slowly). Papa teach me (Aly) said it not long ago and he said it is incorrect but a lot of people say it. Actually, I have family in the States and they say that a lot. Another thing I hear a lot on tv series is: AnywayS. It is wrong but people keep saying it (especially young people). Perhaps it's ok to say it but as you said, I wouldn't advise anyone to use these kind of words or expressions in exams.

Oh so yoda wasn’t entirely grammatically incorrect

I wonder if there's a slight difference between British English and American English here. I think in American English "just as well" would more often describe something unintended but nevertheless good. Like, "I meant to take the umbrella out of the car, but it's just as well since it rained while I was out." And interestingly enough, I see that the American Merriam-Webster dictionary reflects this connotation, whereas the Cambridge English dictionary does not. Anyway, I appreciated the video--I found myself using this phrase today and began thinking more about what it means and where it came from.

Where's "cringey"?
@causilvestrini70004 күн бұрын
Thank you Ben! Another expression that baffled me (maybe it's old English) was "what say you?". Crazy.
@ndrmkhn65594 күн бұрын
Thank you, Ben. So many young Russians around me (including my daughter) use to say nowadays "cringe" or "cringey" (кринжово [krʲɪnˈʐovə]). And it's well worthy to know where it came from.

Thanks a lot for the video. I am always very confused by people answering "yes" when asked "do you mind if ..." it sounds very wrong to me, even though most of the time they would add, "go ahead" which makes it all clearer... Is it considered correct ?
@tothepointenglishwithben.4 күн бұрын
Well, the correct answer would be "no," but in real life, context and non-verbal communication are extremely important, so it would be understood.

That's just a common mistake rather than an accepted fixed expression. Native English speakers often make mistakes that are simply wrong 🙂

Hey, Ben. Firstly, thanks so much for the *comprehensible input* 😊 it's cool 😎 Secondly, you're a third Ben that I know, that is, I know a *Ben*ito who is a flight attendant from Spain and now he's learning Russian here, in Belarus + *Ben*jamin from Australia who I don't know that well and who's also studying Russian here 😮😉 So, that's quite rad, comrade 🫡 Have a swell day out there 💯🤩✨

Hi Ben, That's a video I hadn't expected from an English teacher but that's exactly why it is such a great video. I really often hear these expressions in films or series and when I text with my relatives in America that's the way it goes😅 Now I understand it much better, I appreciate it😊 Please more of them when possible❤

Thanks Ben 😊, useful video, as always. You're right. I go to the UK on holiday once a year. Even though I passed the CAE, I still find it difficult talking to native speakers because of their different accents and because they use a lot of informal language. 😊
