I often caution people about being too specific when they interpret lyrics. Also, my feeling isn't necessarily THE interpretation. That being said, given the time this was written (originally in 1967), it really comes across as an introspective take on the poor young soldiers sent to Vietnam. It doesn't throw hate on those young wide eyed kids either. It is rather sadly sympathetic, "Though you came with sword held high, you did not conquer, only died!" So ahead of its time! Once again, that is not the only way to see it but it seems valid.
