Shame it was bit of a lackluster day. I hear you on the benefits of a horse who helps the rider. Admittedly, my horse isn't so much helping but rather thinking that I'm an idiot and he's the smart one. He might be right.

I also have an older horse. He's a thirty two year old Highland Pony. He's now rugged in winter and hard fed all year round. Sooty might have also reached an age where she needs more feed and more hay to maintain her weight.
