Eve, like all other cell companies, unintentionally produces some grade B cells which leak onto the market and are presented as grade A's. Many discount battery brands put true grade A cells into batteries that they send to reviewers, but use grade B's to lower costs in the batteries that they sell to regular retail customers. This is fine for light use because issues typically show up in 2-3 years, well after the warranty period, and who puts their battery through a full charge/discharge cycle every day? Recycle the battery since prices will be low enough in 3 years to replace it easily. Because the grade B's don't balance well, and have different voltage drop under load, the whole battery loses effective capacity more quickly than if it were made with grade A's. Prices are so low that I'm not saying that these cheap batteries are a bad deal; the quality batteries have to be about 70% more expensive, it seems.
@Jasonoid5 ай бұрын
Wouldn't they destroy the QR code and battery SN if it was a grade B battery?
@posteroonie5 ай бұрын
@@Jasonoid The QR code, at least the few I've seen, are just the SN. What I don't have access to is the manufacturer's data on how that cell tested out at the factory.

I remember Will Prowse saying that some of the discount brands will vary the BMS and cells that they use over time. So while a battery bought today may have a good BMS and cells, a battery bought tomorrow may have a poor BMS and cells. I believe there was a video where he compared the contents of a battery sold a year apart and it was different.

One thing I see ignored on a lot of these lithium battery reviews is any mention of their limitations in cold or hot conditions. The low temperature cutoff is cool, what what does it really mean? Is it safe to still leave the battery in really cold temperatures? Would be okay sitting inside your truck or SUV interior in the winter as the house battery, waiting for the vehicle to warm up inside? Or would that damage the battery? Not everyone lives in a temperate climate. Love your channel. Thanks for everything.
@Jasonoid5 ай бұрын
I live in a high desert so I have very hot summers and very cold winters. Yes it's fine to leave the battery in cold temps, it's also fine to use / discharge the battery in cold temps. The only damage that will occur is charging LFP batteries in cold temps. That's why low temp charging protection is in place on these 👍
@overland635 ай бұрын
@@Jasonoid Thanks.
@Kantuski4 ай бұрын
@@Jasonoid My question as well, at what 'low' temp will charging a LFP cause damage? I noticed that the manufacturer claims a 5 degree F as their low temp cutout, wouldn't that be 27 degrees too late to provide protection?
@Jasonoid4 ай бұрын
5F is the setting in this model. From my testing, when charging at low temps, the battery voltage jumps quickly to 14v making the BMS think it's full. So you can't really put much current into the battery anyways. If it's cold you can only charge it very slowly at low current which won't cause damage.
@Kantuski4 ай бұрын
@@Jasonoid Thanks. Is low temp protection to stop the ability to CHARGE only or also to stop the ability to DISCHARGE? I have read there are 2 settings for protection and charge was @ 32 F while discharge was @ 5 F, like this spec.

I am a little concerned by seeing battery voltage down to 13.0V at 10 minutes...3.25V per cell with a 20A load...I'd expect to see 3.28V or so...but without measuring on the battery terminals its hard to say if you got that 160mV of voltage drop on the cables you used (which seem plenty large) Seeing 12.40V with a 100A load seems about right 3.10V per cell at 1C is where most LiFePO4 falls. I guess the cells are beyond the 6 month "shelf life" and very likely ARE NOT Grade A cells. Would love to see a YR1035 or RC3563 used to do an IR measurement....the test reports from EVE are VERY consistent so its pretty easy to know just off IR if a cell is Grade A material

@@Jasonoid Honestly though if you only want a 12V battery though I think building your own battery is not a bad option if you are going to use EVE cells, because it's just 4 EVE cells in series, I suppose the only issue will be the cost of shipping on the EVE cells, because when your ordering like 16 the shipping is actually pretty cheap, that way you know what cells, BMS and wiring your getting for sure. And as long as you get EVE cells that are pre-tapped all you need are some bus bars which you can lock down with nuts, although again it's not like you are going to save much money though, but if your really that worried about getting a high quality product it's one way to guarantee it.
