I know he was quick down and dirty but my CDO is killing me over marking center, then center punch they're both off I think the center punch is actually center and the Mark is off to the left, I wish there was an after center punch that I could line up better with the corners to see , but it's definitely in my toolbox now and I can't wait to use it in fact I'm probably going to practice this afternoon using it and seeing how I like it, so thank you for the trick👍

Another good tip and great video as usual. You could also lightly tack the nut under the table and have the screw going through it and sticking up through the hole in the table. That way you could have the point just sticking up a little bit above the table or have as much height adjustment as you need. Hope this could be useful to some welders. I use the little Miller STL 150 Tig welder and it's been the best welder I have ever owned. At 13.7 lbs, it has come to work with me on the back seat of my Honda VTX 1800 many times. I know many people have probably laughed at me when they saw it, but I don't care as it has given me many overtime hours of work I would not have gotten without it. Thanks for sharing. Dan

The problem I have with this is that you have to use your hand, so no filler rod. I played around with a trashed microwave and took the rotator plate out of it. Another idea is the a simple battery operated setup using a cordless screwdriver with a gear and mounted to a plate.

That’s brilliant! I did something similar once using a large ball bearing pulley as my work surface and then using a magnetic dial gauge tool holder to mount the tig torch in perfect position, then it was just tig foot pedal and manual rotation while filling. Came out beautiful on some 2” stainless weld pipe fittings.

Done similar.... That's still hot😂🤣 when I was just a wee little welder.. I could weld a few sticks on a piece, grab it bare handed and check it out.. I was a tough little bastard back then!!! I got in trouble in high school for hanging out with a friend in his welding class.. (I never went to school to weld, I was doing production welding and custom repairs when I was 14) So.. the trouble was, I didn't belong in that shop, especially welding 😂🤣 so the instructor said "ok smart ass, let's see what you were welding". LMAO 🤣 careful what you ask for!!! I grabbed it out of the vice (bare handed) I looked it over for a few seconds, tossed it to him.... Yup!! You guessed it, he could sure say a lot of words in a very short time!!!! I did the same thing to my dad once.. only thing that saved my life then, was I hit the lock on the shop door on my way out!! Gave me a little more head start👍😁😎

I keep a 20in or so 3/4 round disc at work with a dot welded on the center, best lazy susan for welding.

I use to have to weld large heavy projects as a maintenance welder. Now trying to rotate 50kg sections on a bench was tough. So I use to stick nuts under the centre to pivot around.

Good tip, Now I was wondering fi you could do a lesson on mig brazing (silicone bronze . i have some fancy patio furniture chairs which need some repair and i think mig brazing with silicone bronze wire will do the trick. If it was a one only tig brazing would work but there are too many pieces to be done. The patio chairs are thin steel not aluminum and I don't what to melt the parent metal at all.

That got me thinking, if you had a rubber cone mounted to a windscreen wiper motor and a variable speed switch to it , you'd be able to position it over the dead centre top of it with a jig and let the weight of the motor and assembly provide enough pressure on the cone to workpiece to Turn it leaving both hands free, although I suppose one of the free hands would then be adjusting the speed control

What to do with the center punch afterward? It is not leaving a nice surface🧐 I use a flat surface (thrust) bearing and an old wheel brake disc. Not much more expensive but leaves the surfaces nice.

I wanted to get a welder to have around my shop to do repairs and some hobby work. I was amazed watching you because I didn’t see any fumes, smoke or splatter coming off your welding. I think you said you were using a “mig” torch? I didn’t notice you using any welding material either just the torch. It looked like a cold welding setup. I have asthma and I’m worried about the fumes. What would you suggest I use?

Use a ventilator fan or fume extractor, will do a pretty good job keeping smoke away from you. There's some high dollar ones, or you can set up a homemade rig too

Large ball bearings work for that, and you don’t have to Center point your piece 👍🏼. I’m a mechanic as well and save large bearings just for this.

A nurse at my pcp's office was talking one day about the time he was in highschool shop class welding something. They had a pile of metal to work from and someone threw a piece of hot steel onto the pile, he grabbed it and it burned his hand so badly that he had to get skin graphs on his palm. He still doesn't have a finger print on two of his fingers. Workshop safety is very important, don't throw hot steel onto a pile people are pulling from. Wear your gloves. Most importantly, don't endanger yourself by being stupid.
