To us Filipinos hearing foreigners speaking a formal Tagalog like Paalam is a music to our ears because we seldom use deep Filipino words. Please enjoy the Philippines. I hope you can visit the BGC area so you can see the contrast of the old Manila and the modern Metro Manila.

Ikinagagalak ko kayong makilala-happy to know you. No one ever says that any more. Pinoys will opt for the easier, "nice to meet you". Kumusta gets shortened to casual "musta". Same with Paalam, people say " Sige" -see-geh. Both greetings are originally Spanish greetings, Como esta and sigue.

Those teens are being friendly. The guy who was telling u directions is having a difficulty of expressing him self in giving directions, he wasnt trying to give u the wrong direction, he was being sincere. The expression that the other teen was giving isnt even a Filipino or Tagalog language, they might have watched it or got it somewhere else or online. The other teen guy was even telling his friend to get ur youtube channel and subscribe to u, they wanted to support you. They were being nice to u and happy to talk to u. Im also confused that i thought u were looking for the port (where ship departs or arrive to). So its The Fort Santiago u were referring to. I also appreciate u speaking our Language and it seems everybody loves that ur trying to speak Tagalog or Filipino.

For those who want to know more about the Philippines. Maybe it can be attributed partly, to the works being done by the Philippine Department of Tourism and partly, to vloggers like you. Some tips: when greeting one person, you say “Kumusta ka?” Or just “Kumusta?” When greeting a group of people or greeting someone in a formal way, you say “Kumusta kayo?” You can also add the word “po” to some sentences to show respect especially to people who seem older than you. For example, “Kumusta po kayo?” “Ano po pangalan ninyo?” (What’s your name?) “Magkano po ito?” (How much is this?) “Ano po ito?” (What is this?). Great you tried the jeepney. When in the jeepney and you’re going to pay the driver, say “Bayad po, kuya” (Bayad is payment -and kuya is the male version of Ate). When you’ve reached your destination and need the driver to stop so you can get off, you say “Para po”.

Saying paalam is too formal, we just say bye or babye, or we even say "thank you po ate/kuya" as a way of saying goodbye, or we also say, "sige po". Also, it's okay to say KUMUSTA to just anyone but to be more casual, like a local, just say "Hello po". Sometimes when the meeting is anticipated, we say "kumusta?" or "kumusta na?".
