I was a competitive freestyle skier in the mid '70's, (I hesitate calling myself a 'professional', as a pro makes money performing; me < good enough to compete, not good enough to win.) At the time, a cutting edge aerial was a back flip; a back flip w/ a full twist was instant 1st place as long as you stuck the landing. No one was doing front flips. I had a university connection w/ our D1 gymnastics team & coach & could use their equipment & train w/ them occasionally. There was no way I could keep up w/ them; at the time, they were cutting edge for aerial maneuvers, along w/ platform & spring board divers. The amazing level of aerial skills in some everyday people & off the chart skill in competitive performers is mind boggling to me. Spatial awareness of your body is not a skill you pick up in a casual attempt, one afternoon. When you're inverted, it's much, much more difficult. There seems to be many more people developing these skills, nowadays. I can't figure out why. If the same percentage of people were as skilled in the '70's, I wouldn't have come close to being able to compete, but not win. We didn't have the security of practicing, or performing, in a helmet. Helmet choice was minimal. Basically, a motorcycle/car racing helmet w/ no peripheral vision or a motorcycle helmet... It wasn't until the yr I finally surrended & quit that some guys came up w/ the idea of practicing aerials over a swimming pool. The only other option is on hard azz, neck & body breaking snow. So, the ability to practice & perfect aerials was limited. It's why I utilized the gymnastic team connection. But while I could perform inverted & twisting tricks on the trampolines & practice w/ spin harnesses, performing the same of skis/snow is a huge leap, in skill & confidence. The para- & quadrapelegic wards were filling uplike a hot concert venue; the orthopedic spine docs were getting lots of practice. Having the thought of 'who's the latest friend/competitor on wheels?' running through your head is not a competitive advantage. I am in awe of the amazing advance in skill in less than 50 yrs.

It should be quite the opposite.... 100 luck , 0 skills...ok maybe 1%. Because 99%of them, could not do it twice, whatever they done it. Plus, I'm pretty sure great deal of it was fake videos. What I can praise and appreciate is the courage of young people to try to do things like this.... The wisdom to do things like that....not so much 🙄
