This is the first of a series of crash-courses on the major arcana cards as seen through both a historical and Sefer Yetzirah perspective.
The Sefer Yetzirah is the oldest esoteric Hebrew text. In the 16th century, along with other philosophical doctrines and the midrash, Moses Cordovero incorporated this ancient text into his Tree of Life. In doing so, he inversed the role of the feminine and masculine as well as the attributes of spheres 5 and 6, vis a vis the Sefer Yetzirah.
There is a common hypothesis today that the Tarot is based on this Kabbalist Tree. Yet the Tarot came out in the 15th century, at least 100 years before Cordovero's Tree. The common denominator between the Tarot and the Tree is, however, the Sefer Yetzirah, which was in vogue with hermeticists in the 15th century.
