This video can appear as a real fake, and if i would have seen it from an other youtuber i would have considering it as a MONSTER FAKE
.
But it is not.
This experiment is a result from today's experiment from Magluvin and Grumage at OU.com.
So no blabla , this experiment cost NOTHING in money and time, so get a ring magnet from a microwave oven "magnetron" or any other ring magnet (or disk magnet or perhaps every magnet) and hang it with a thin and long sewing thread and test it.
I leave in the north hemisphere (europe) and it spins only counter clockwise, no chance on clockwise.
Where does this asymmetry come from ??
I have tried with many different magnets in and outside all around my house.
If i let the magnet spin long enough, the torsion of the thread will stop the spinning and than the magnet spins on the other direction, but much slower and sops much before the torsion has completely released
Very very interesting stuff here
Hope this helps
Good luck at all
Laurent

This has already been explored and the motion was the contribution of the thread winding tension.

I replicated this and really thought it was incredible, but it must be caused by the tension in the thread. I eliminated the thread by placing my magnet in a plastic lid and floating the lid in a plastic bowl full of water. The attraction to north was very strong. The magnet was easily able to swing the lid around. Sadly, it cogs as one would expect. No rotation in either direction.

Hi all Just for info, it seems that we all get a CCW spinning due to the fact that it seems that all over the planet the sewing cotton thread are twisted the same way. So the gravity is probably unwinding the cotton thread which gives an additional torque to the magnet and let it spin. I have made a second vidéo with some further test in my house, where i get some CCW effect, but it is probably specific and to be verified . But it was a pleasure to feel and see those magnets trying to face North with such a strength, i did not know that before this very simple experiment. Good luck to all of you Laurent

+woopyjump Don't be so hasty to believe Tinman :) You can falsify his inference by looping the thread in a triangle around a single ring magnet and a point where it hangs. I can promise you a mathematical knot does not unwind.

Woopyjump, Catamaran can sail at twice the speed of the wind. Iceboats can typically sail at five times the speed of the wind. By sailing downwind at 135 degrees off the wind, a sand yacht can sail much faster than the wind. I don't know the decrees but look like you have found "sweet spot" of Earths magnetic pull. Imagine if your magnet was about 4 ft diameter and mounted on a shaft with low friction bearing? I think you would get some power out of. Your round magnet looks like 2 inches diameter but accelerates real FAST. Thanks for sharing.

Woopy -- please try the experiment with a simple weight, no magnetic field, just a weight... like a large metal ring/washer for example. (Could it be that the mass is just causing the thread to "unwind"? -- and not a magnetic effect after all?) -Steve

+Steven Jones Hi Steven, yes you are probably right , as it seems that all sewing threads are wound the same way on this planet, that could explain why we all get a CCW spinning as the thread unwinds and adds a falsifying torque. So i id some further test with unidirectional kevlar (untwisted) and the result is no more spectacular. See my second video on this subject. Thank's Laurent

The only way to know it's true is, to take the test by your self,....I notice this two years ago but did not stand by, tonight i repeat it and it works directly .. Great one.... good for more study ...Thanks

in Netherland... Europe... allways counterclockwise the same as your...two years ago,in the first spin gets a very high speed..i use a much smaller magnet diameter, also multyple magnets works very well....thanks

Well done! There is another magnetic field to take into count besides north south of the earth. There's also an up and down field variation throughout different places on earth, do to iron content in the ground. A regular compass isn't balanced properly to detect it. A Google Earth magnetic overlay can show the intensity of magnetism in different areas.

Unwind the spiral thread torsion with washers of equal weight to the magnets first, hold the thread in that position and then replace the washers with the magnets, Im bettin that it.s just the thread unwinding.

First I used 2 Neodinium bar magnets only. Did not work. Then I tried the same 2 magnets but added 2 round ferrite cores on each end. Works!

I have a magnet toy at the office that will vibrate when the fluorescent lights above are putting off dirty energy. Double check in the dark to see if this still works. Could just be dirty energy from a ballast.

I am sorry, but after some time it Stops... When I put it in the stable position I notice- when North pole of the magnet go near to Earth South pole it starts to go slower and after some time this brake ruin the rotation. All stops.

this actually makes perfect sense as for the ring magnets and the two field interaction of magnetic fields I would assume that the earth's magnetic field has some degree of fluxuation much the same as its electrostatic fluxuation. the EMF has a rate of change of about 15 seconds for the sun and several other rates for the moon. I realize I am opening myself to many ignorant comments but WTF.

It works! I take bar magnets from children toy "GEOMAG". 3 bar magnets to South and 3 to North. Rotates! Clockwise! I am in Latvia.

Try it in a vacuum for lesser air resistance and add some pickup coils :) Remaining skeptical but this is so simple that I have to test it so I can actually know.

Interestingly enough it does seem to work with a long row of small magnets hanging from a one meter long thin wire. It accelerates quite a lot given the circumstance. This requires some further study.

Only throwing out an idea, so please don't shoot the messenger. Could the rotational movement be a result of the bloch wall of the magnets, interacting with the earths bloch wall, and the two are acting like 2 gears set at 90 degrees to each other? Something along these lines, upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/61/Gear-kegelzahnrad.svg/2100px-Gear-kegelzahnrad.svg.png
