Thank you for posting these videos. My family was stationed here from 1964 to 1966. I was born in Turkey, but we left when I was a baby. My parents and brother are deceased now, and I am nearing 60 years old, but have no memories of our stay there. This has allowed me to see where they lived and where I was born. Thank you for your photos.

If you want to see public housing side of Karamürsel Air Station, please watch video music clip of "Ogün Sanlısoy - Sen". Most probably your parents lived there. This video shows just military side of the base. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXSpgIdqrtp4bassi=1sBr5lLFVaffRExn

My Dad was in the Air Force. We moved from base in Southern Italy to Karmusel Air Force Base in Turkey. We lived temporarily in Quonset hut until quarters opened. Up,. I went to Kindergarten in a. Quonset hut down the row from the one we breifly stayed in . We did travel around Turkey to see the sites. My Dad was friends with Nasif a Turkish man who ran the package store. He invited our family to come to his families home. My sister and I were spoiled rotten but so kind . We were invited to family's Villa on the coast. I remember camel caravans going on road just off base. Such an experience. Dad was transferred to Fort Benning , Columbus. Georgia. Whole new culture shock when everyone spoke English.

Amazing! Was a 19 year old at KAS from Oct 63 to Mar 65. The video brings back 1 1/2 years of great memories; great work, golf in the antenna field, sailing/boating, scuba diving, softball, some evening college, Yalova, Istanbul and more. Thanks for sharing the video.

Seeing this video brings back many memories of Karamursel. I was in the Marine Corps living in the Quonset Huts from 1959 to 1961. The Quonset Huts where the Marine Corps was housed, was given the honorary title of "Quiet Village" because the parties we had generated many weird sounds.

Amazing memories accompanied by a nice and harmonious music. I am a Turkish person living in Kocaeli, the province in which Karamursel town is located. I pass by the Karamursel Base every month and wonder the functions of the buildings in it. Thank you for your explanatory and very fine video.

I was station at KAS in 1970. I just looked up the base on google earth & you can see where the elephant cage used to be. I transfered to Misawa Japan doing the same job. I looked up Misawa on google earth and the antenna is still up. That base may still be functional. Fun going down memory lane.

In the pictures of the waterfront, it looks like the base boat we used to go to Istanbul instead of driving. 2 Hall Scott main engines with 3 Crosley engines used to provide electrical power.

My Dad was stationed at Karamursel - Base 1960-1961. He and a group of others have a reunion (known as the KAS reunion) every year. They have been meeting for over 10 years. It is interesting to listen to their stories and the responsibility that these guys had at such young ages. Their patriotism is still as strong as it was when they were 18 - 20 years old. These guys are getting old and some have passed. The groups gets smaller each year. I am certain that they would love to have others who served here during the Cold War join their reunion.

Wonderful Video. I was stationed at Diyarbakir Air Station in 1968-69 in Southeastern Turkey. What I find striking about the video is the music as I also listen to Turkish music every now and then and enjoy it. I guess those nights of listening to medium wave Turkish radio had a permanent effect. At Diyarbakir Tech Control we had various USAF circuits to KAS & talked a lot with other Tech Controllers who were at Kas (AJT). I never got to visit Karamursel so your video is very enjoyable.

You must have gotten there about the time we left. Dad was with the NSGA there. Part of the antenna field being under Navy control. Seeing the pictures of the cluster of Quonset huts looked like the old school classrooms for us kids. We moved into the new base housing and school about mid-way thru the school year. In Navy terms, we were plank owners of the new school. We lived in Golcuk until the base duplexes were completed and ours was directly across from the new school. The duplex still stands 54 years later.

I was searching Karamursel and found your video. Very cool. I was there for 18 months, ending October 1962. Then went on to St. Lawrence Island for a year. Now I'm planning to be back in Istanbul for a short time in July. Anybody been back to KAS recently who knows if 'Old' visitors are welcome. Thanks. John Horn

I arrived at KAS on October 27, 1961, while we were at DEFCON 3 from the Cuban Missile Crisis. Was Assigned to TUSLOG Det 3, which became TUSLOG Det 94 while I was there. Got a curtailment of tour and had my DEROS changed to New Years' Day,1964. Spent the last 23 months of my Enlistment with the 6947th Security Squadron in Key West, FL. I was there when the Earthquake happened in 1963.

Best bunch of base pix I've seen. I finished high school on the base in 71 after they moved us dormies from Ankara due to anti-US activity...airmen getting abducted, etc. We were housed in the barracks/dorms just to the right of the base entrance. I was saddened to read about the earthquake destruction Yalova experienced in Turkey's last Big One. Thanks for jogging the memory banks. Keith Knowlton
