Whirlpool is a 1950 American film noir thriller directed by Otto Preminger and written by Ben Hecht and Andrew Solt, adapted from the 1946 novel Methinks the Lady... by Guy Endore. The film stars Gene Tierney, Richard Conte, José Ferrer and Charles Bickford, and features Constance Collier in her final film role. Its plot follows the insomniac wife of a wealthy Los Angeles psychoanalyst who, after a chance meeting with a hypnotist, is charged with a violent murder.
Owing to anti-British statements screenwriter Hecht had made in the recent past concerning the United Kingdom's involvement in Israel, prints of the film initially circulated in the country replaced his credit with the pseudonym Lester Barstow.

When I watch black and white old movies, they make me feel safe and happy as yesterdays we're simple and a slower pace of life. No foul language or sexual scenes. When I am sad and feel lonely these movies are a must. I can go back in time and feel comforted somehow because it was a happy time.

I used to watch these movies with my mom as a kid, usually after school, sitting in front of our b&w TV with the rabbit ears. They'd come on a program called The Early Show, these 50s-era films that featured women whose wardrobes featured a lot of evening gowns for parties & nightclubbing. I really thought (I was 10) this was how my life would be as an adult: I'd grow up to move to NYC, work as a secretary, rent an apt with roommates, & go out dancing after work where one day I'd meet my future husband...Spencer Tracy or Cary Grant. Funny how these films could suggest a lifestyle to a little Negro girl from Chicago whose dad was a bus driver and whose mom was a housewife and artist. But I loved these films. This is the first time I've seen Whirlpool. The story unfortunately collapses in the 3rd act but, on the whole, it's still entertaining. Gene Tierney's most memorable roles--The Razor's Edge, Laura--are still favorites of mine. I did grow up & move to NYC, not for a secretarial job but to attend NYU grad school. I didn't own any evening gowns--just jeans & t-shirts. By the 70s, life had changed.

@@MajorKeys714 I’m a designer/ dressmaker. I’ve been doing it for 55 years and a big part of my motivation was having the clothes I couldn’t afford. I recently finished a Prada knock off coat that’s delicious. Fashion still thrills me, but these days you have to look a little harder for it. 💕

@@CLT51154 you're talking to a huge fan of Project Runway. I admire the creativity and skill set of those who sew & design fashion. Way back in the day, girls were required to take courses in the "domestic arts" in junior high--cooking & sewing. Gosh,I remember how tough it was just to learn how to thread & operate the sewing machine! Although it was a struggle, I did manage to make an apron, then onto using a pattern to make a fashionable top. That was the last and only time i sewed anything. But for many women in my family, making their clothes--skirts, dresses, prom dresses--was the best way to dress affordably. I'd like to see a photo of the Prada coat. I have a proton email if you'd care to brag on yourself by sharing a pic. And while I don't sew, I do knit & crochet. I love making hats. Dress gloves were part of our Sunday outfit for church. White gloves that came up to the wrist. My mom loved fashion & always bought me what was trending: I remember being the only girl to have a balloon dress. She also got me a Ben Casey dress & I was the first kid to own a skortHave you ever watched The Expanse, a sci fi series on Amazon? One of the leading characters, Chrisjen Avasarala, a diplomat, is always dressed to the nines in some remarkable outfits. I hope you keep in touch. ♥️I love this comment. I watched these 1950s films as a little girl with my grandma, in socialist Yugoslavia that was falling apart at the time, the 1990s. And I, too, imagined I would grow up and that that's what my adult life would look like, and that I would get to wear those beautiful feminine gowns, and more importantly, do those lovely romantic things. I, too, regret that the world had changed so much, and for the worse, from the 1970s onwards. I did manage to score "the next best thing". My husband. Born in late 1970s Paris, he, too, watched a lot of these old American movies with his own grandparents. And he is the kindest, most well-raised, gentleman-like, 1950s style old-fashioned person I've ever met. In 2010s Paris, of all places, where people are nothing but egotistical and rude and engage in all sorts of immoral behavior. We're definitely going to have kids watch the 1950s movies with us, because it certainly does something to a young person's psyche that we want for the world's future generation.

As a child I discovered a jazz station on my radio in my room. At night the jazz music stopped and old radio shows came on, including old commercials in the place where regular commercials would go between shows. Bob and Ray, part of their show was a soap opera where Bob and ray played all the characters. The sound effects were great and the show was hysterical. Burns and Allen which was also very funny. I can’t remember what else because I was probably 14. It went on for hours and I fell asleep to it. When I woke up in the morning I was very disappointed that I woke up in normal reality and not in the reality that was portrayed in the radio shows. These were on every Sunday I believeAnd shaped my childhood forever. I began watching old movies I knew many actors my grandparents knew. I’m very disappointed my son does not know who any actors from the 30s 40s and 50s are. But I will always love Bob and Ray, And burns and Allen, and the old soap commercials From the radio. When I was older I looked into how they made the sound Effects On the radio and it was genius.

@Alexis Valere I totally agree about the sets. The houses and, especially the apartment layouts/decor from the 40s, 50s movies were just as great as the wardrobes. Even in the apartments that were supposed to be of low and middle income characters. Have you noticed the layouts of the apartments/houses for the 1940s-50s films: Laura, Rear Window, How To Murder My Wife (my favorite), Indiscreet, How To Marry A Millionaire, Designing Woman...? And the offices in Sabrina - to name a few... I know I'm forgetting a lot of other ones. . Sometimes I'll rewind and pause scenes just to get a better view of the sets and decor and see if the layouts are realistic architecturally. I used to (still do) image myself living in them especially ones that had a room/space that could be my studio.

Getting hooked on films from the 1940s and 1950s, including the B movies, but this one is superb and so gorgeous to look at with the elegant clothes, interiors and cars. Gene Tierney is excellent in this film, she is so beautiful too and her face reminds me of my late mother in her younger days. David is such a creepy character, brilliantly played. Richard Conte was a fine actor too who was only 65 when he died of a heart attack in 1975. I also like the actor playing the police detective. Although the plot is a bit hard to believe, it still works and the tension builds throughout. Glad I watched it and also fascinating to read about Gene Tierney online, never knew that she had severe depression, or that she had had a brief fling with JFK in 1946.

Otto Preminger never disappoints! Gene Tierney's acting was top notch (especially when conveying a dazed hypnotic state), the wardrobe was chic and gorgeous (especially for the ladies' party dresses), and the suspenseful conspiracy plot was filled to the brim with clever manipulation ploys (I legitimately thought to myself "ohhh, so _that's_ what he did that for!" several times throughout the film).

Wow. 24:18 - Same thing happened to me... a dashing psychotherapist who turned out to have BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) after my money and anything else he could get. He was a nightmare. When I finally freed myself from him, he quickly moved in on another kind woman in our village. I emailed her, warning her, telling her everything he had done to me. She wrote back: "Funny... he never said anything bad about you!" Within a year he had ruined her too and moved on. Women need to listen to each other.

Ferrer on his own embodies Smooth, Suave and elegance. With his every move, utterance and gesture anticipating the next in unbroken linear grace. The opulence of the scenes is bolstered by the silky, satiny and velvet texture of the acting and color isn't needed in this film. Conte is miscast as the psychiatrist. IMO Ferrer is actually playing a real psychiatrist but the role needed to be shrouded to not expose what is a pseudo science.

I'm always disappointed when a film makes a huge mistake medically, and in this case, we can clearly see they bandage Ferrar's left side- the Gallbladder is on the right. Anyway, it just seems like someone would have checked all that and caught the error. Tierney made some films where her character was mentally ill, and given the fact that she was institutionalized for depression multiple times after her daughter was born with terrible afflictions, it must have been strange to portray what she felt in real life. This is a fine film that flows rapidly, with a good plot and the best actors. TY! Chris has so many fine films- I don't know why I haven't subbed earlier.

You don't reveal private information about a patient to anyone, not even to investigators unless you get consent from the patient or the family ( if deceased or the person who has power of attorney) & another doctor could not look at another patients chart without authorization ( a consult, etc.). At least that is not the case today. The 50's was before HIPPA though.

Despite the psychological blather, this was a gorgeous film with gorgeous Gene Tierney, who apparently had some real-life mental problems of her own. Whatever, this was so crisp in b/w, and Richard Conte so handsome and charming as her loyal husband, not to mention the despicable hypnotist Jose Ferrer...we know what's coming but remain SPELLBOUND (another great film) to the dramatic, BIG KISS (what else?) finale. I like what someone said here, that "The ghost of the police detective's wife hung over the last half of the film." I have to admit that I liked the way they let our lovely leading lady off for shoplifting, the crime of many women abused or neglected in childhood, and I've got the grey suede boots to prove it!

I'm really loving this movie. I work in behavioral health, and I've spent a lot of time studying psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theory. In the United States, Freud was interpreted a certain way and it became dogmatic almost instantly. Psychoanalysts were taught that they had to undergo a purification process in which their own neuroses would be removed by an intensive analysis, and then in their pure and holy state, they would be able to confer wisdom and power to their clientele. By the way, this is not in any way what Freud meant or intended. But American psychoanalysts turned into high priests of gobblegook, and they would corner people and accuse them of incestuous fantasies or a variety of weird things. And people would break, confess, and then pretend to feel better. Psychoanalytic theory has pulled itself out of this ridiculous cult of dogmatism, but in 1950, this is exactly what psychoanalysts did and were. This film accurately represents the bizarre version of psychoanalysis that existed in the US in the middle of the 20th century.
