Some suggestions to help you get better temperature readings. First always assume the temps you are seeing from bare, unpainted metals are completely wrong (up to 95% can be reflected infrared radiation). If you want to see true temps on most objects the easiest thing to do is put a strip of 3M black electrical tape on the object and then measure the temp of the tape. That specific tape has a very high emissivity and will most accurately show the object's temperature. Also, know that glass and most plastics are almost opaque to infrared (very little passes through) and tend to be pretty reflective. Try looking at the windshield on your car on a clear day. It will look very cold to the IR camera because it is reflecting the sky which is emitting little to no IR radiation.

Yes agree with all you say , I recall having problems adjusting a bypass valve in the past, which had to be adjusted by measuring temperature difference between two aluminium pipes, although in that case i was using a spot meter but same problem. think I mentioned problem with reflective in video. I do have some black tape that is metallic and conductive, but i got so long ago I can't even remember proper name. didn't know about the 3m tape, must give it a try. But mostly for my purposes the actual temp is rarely needed, just looks okay are way too hot!

I highly recommend to buy a CO2 lens and print a housing for it. You can magnify electronic components with it. I use my Flir Pro all the time with it when dealing with smd components to find shorts.
@MakeOrRepair
@MakeOrRepair 2 жыл бұрын
A pair of lenses one for visible and one for IR? othewise they will no longer line up? Are you using a lens that lengthens the focal length (so magnifies from further away), I can deal pretty well with 0603 and perhaps smaller just the paralax adjustment won't go far enough.

HI, It depends a little on your intended use. I think I am pretty happy with it for what I use it for, and it has certainly done the job each time I needed it. Thermals of the house and normal size objects are easy with it. Unless I were willing to pay a lot more I think I made the right choice. I mostly deal with small items and have to hold the camera pretty close, if there is a FLIR that magnified a bit more so I could distinguish small components with the camera further away that would proably have been a better choice but not sure how you could distinguish, and I use mine in the lab so I can't really stand a long way off - perhaps there is a field of view figure on the specs or could email FLIR? For my purposes, the fairly high thermal resolution (and high temperature range) compared to other lowish price devices, and the way it traces outlines were a must and that vs. price (which was about my limit) drove my decision - I would definately not get a cheaper one without the MSX feature , the errant temperature dots in the app are just a slight annoyance and don't happen all the time, proably get fixed in another app update. Frame rate is quite low, but again for me that is not a real issue, photos and video capture are fine. While you can adjust the parallax between the visible and IR, this only goes so far certainly it is perfect at a couple of meters and perhaps as close as 60cm but for close-ups of tiny electronics components, the camera is just too close at about 8 inches and there is an unavoidable offset between visible and IR pictures, I've seen Dave Jones using a much more expensive camera and he reported the same problem. Often it is not a big deal, you can just mentally make the adjustment but when you have to choose between 2 featureless resistors and a transistor, all the size of a grain of rice in an areas of 0.5cm then you have to resort to either burning your finger or using a pointer like I did with the pencil. Hope that helps and good luck with your choice, please report back if you get one.

I have a defender case and use the extension plug, it wobbles a bit and will lose connectivity. When I use the fixed lightning port it’s fine. I’m just starting to use it to evaluate houses and commercial agricultural facilities.

@@MakeOrRepair it’s pretty thick and the factory connection doesn’t reach. The extension works fair but is just aggravating. Thanks for the vid. We had a thermal camera in early 2004/5 that cost $25k, crazy how some things go up and some go down!

The usage for home insulation is a bit outside my experience. Sure I can see particular hot spots and cold spots, but harder to interpret is for example the colour of a roof or wall area, I think it can be easily impacted by wind or even direction it is facing.

I recently discovered the problem with the case foam turning on the power when stored. I had been wondering why I had to charge it every time I used it!

Yes, very annoying. I now have a twin usb cable about 1m long that I use to link it to the phone, this enables it to use the phone battery, and the phone stays still and convenient while I can move the camera.

Does it provide secondary development kit and have high frame rate, like InfiRay p2 pro?
@MakeOrRepair
@MakeOrRepair Жыл бұрын
No, that looks quite nice except it is missing the ability to mix optical and thermal and the ability to highlight edges which is a really handy feature. Resolution would be nice but Frame rate not particulalry important for my use but may be for some people - I would not go back to not having the mixed optical/~IR edge detection though.

Seems a little odd it isn't powered from the phone... is that a phone limitation or just how the Flir is designed? I don't suppose you have reviewed other Flir products I'm trying to decide which is best for me.
@MakeOrRepair
@MakeOrRepair 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, I expected it to use phone for power, or at least be able to do so if internal battery runs out. I have not reviewed other models, all I can say is that the ability to mix normal and ir and detect edges makes a big difference, and the ir resolution works for me but I would not like it to be lower resolution.

Many phones won't output any (meaningful) power. Some do, but depending on it would narrow the market a lot.
@CornishJohn
@CornishJohn 2 жыл бұрын
@@SqueakyNeb perhaps but the Flirs main competitor works that way and since they only support iPhone and USBC they are narrowing the market to more modern phones... I suppose the ideal would be that it can use the phone's power if available but then no doubt it would cost more. A minor issue really

I haven't tried but I would not think so unless the plane were very close! Thermal cameras have very limited IR resolution so although it could resolve the temperature difference at distance a plance would be well under 1 thermal pixel in size. You would need to be looking at specialist telescopes and binoculars I would have thought not a general purpose thermal camera add-on

A very good question, I just had a look and it is advertised as having "It is possible to use photo, video and time-lapse modes to capture...", I also spottedreference to a timer. I had a search arround and I found an RS instruction leaflet that shows how to do it but the software looks much older, I suspect they have "improved" the app, it used to be a choice of camera, video and time-lapse on a slider. I also updated software today, which seems to just add the ability to add temperature spots and notes to existing pictures but no trace of either timer or timelapse - having looked everywhere I can't find the options. I also looked at the latest IOS demo and that does not seem to have it either. I use an A51 and that should be compatible.

At about 2:55 you will see the menu for spots, so at the top of the screen tap the little "target" (third from right) then you can turn the hot/cold on and off and click the "+" sign on the right to add more general spots that you can move about.

Yes, but it is fast enough for my use, my subjects are stationary and I tend to move out, then pick an area with a hotspot and move closer. But if you wanted to shoot fairly smooth video, or pan rapidly over a large area then you might find it tricky to use. Then again FLIR TG297 which is 3 times the price has the same speed and thermal resolution but worse visible and display so perhaps not so bad after all.
