You should DEFINITELY use the Tektronix to repair the C64: Then they can both be used for what they were made for: The Tektronix for repairing faulty computers, and the C64 for being repaired. :) EDIT: By the way, that Tektronix portable scope was very likely using bleeding edge low power and portable technology for 1995. That LCD would have pretty much been as good as it got back then. You could maybe replace the mercury (most likely) backlight with an LED backlight and it would dramatically improve the viewability of the display.

Actually, given the blue-green glow of the screen, the backlight is most likely EL, not fluorescent. I'm not sure how the power consumption compares with CCFL, but there is no mercury involved.

I've said this before, but I think it bears repeating: I really, really appreciate your video format for mail call items. It's really gratifying to be able to see a contiguous bench demo of items as they come in, even if only for a short confirmation of any faults they may exhibit. I know it must be a lot of work to present them in this way but it really does hook me as a viewer, and it helps set your channel apart from others. Having worked at RadioShack from 1999-2005, I can confirm that around that time, they made a deal with RCA to sell RCA branded TVs, VCRs, and DVD players. Granted, by this time, RCA was a shadow of the company it used to be. But yeah, it was a thing.

The portable TV might be useful if you're out thrifting and want something pocket-sized to test anything you find that has composite output. You know, in those situations where "not working" is a deal breaker. And where they don't also have at least one working TV for sale.

We have one of these scopes at work, i did rebuild the battery pack a few years ago when it still was in daily use and you couldnt buy a good spare anymore. Its 4 flat-top C cells. The best feature on these is that the inputs are isolated from everything, including the other input, so you can clip the probe "ground" on different potentials, even fast-edge ones. You should really use fully-isolated probes though. We now use a fairly new R&S 4-channel isolated scope that is, well, 25 years younger and so much better in any respect, so the tek collects dust and will eventually get thrown out.

That Radio Shack TV (Tandy Corp bought the RCA name in the early 00s) just unlocked a buried memory! Your comment about the tuner line reminded me of a parent’s bright yellow mid-90s LCD portable TV, but the channel selector was on the right and it had a green horizontal line instead of a red vertical one. Exact same system though, and it was only visible in radio mode or if it couldn’t lock on to a TV picture. I’d use that thing to watch TV in the car sometimes on the way to school. If I wasn’t playing Pokémon…!

The last time I played with Tektronix stuff, it was their solid state ink printers. The ink cartridges were chunks of solid CYM-K wax that were melted and then used to print on paper. The cool part was that the 'ink' was crisp and water resistant

I've been going for work to Singapore for years, and remember drooling over these Tek scopes as an alternative to Fluke which was completely out of my budget. In the end, I had to admit to myself, I just couldn't justify the price, and any customer I visited usually had a much better O'scope they could wheel up to the machine if I /really/ needed one [I work in semiconductor manufacturing]. I still felt that wash of excitement as you pulled the scope out of the bag. Thanks for the trip down memory lane... from my hotel in Sicily!

I used to work for Radio Shack, and Radio Shack in earlier days had their own brand names that were rebadged products they bought from Pioneer or Casio, in later years, they were selling brand names along side their own 'branded' products, but by then, RCA had gone belly up, and it's IP was bought up, and then licensed out, so this was probably a TV spec'd by Radio Shack, and then manufactured in China, but branded RCA because Radio Shack had been licensed to put out products under the RCA brand name. That's my guess. Ironically, Radio Shack went belly up, and now their IP is used to push still more Chinese electronics.

3740 refers to the preformatted format. in this case, it's the standard IBM 3740 format (the IBM 3740 being a keypunch replacement that used floppies instead of punch cards), that is, 77 tracks (73 + 4 spare), 128 bytes per sector, 26 sectors per track, giving a total of 256,256 bytes of formatted storage. Each sector is filled with the byte 0xE5 (which IBM deduced was the most complex byte to encode using FM aka 0,1 RLL encoding), and these disks can be used as-is with operating systems like CP/M and ISIS-II, which expect the disk to be in this format. (in fact, CP/M disks are formatted completely blank, using this exact fill byte in every case. The BDOS uses this byte to check if a directory spot is empty.)

the single and double sided 8" disks, unlike 5.25" disks, can't be used interchangeably (the index holes are in different places for both), so you MUST format these as single sided, if you wish to use it.

In Tek's defense, good commodity rechargeable cells weren't as ubiquitous as today. Their concern was likely that people would try to put alkaline cells in it and blow them up.

@@adriansdigitalbasement2 in the early to mid 90s Sony basically still had the defacto monopoly and charged a ton extra. According to Sony, the big battery players had only just gotten NiMH on the market by the late-80s, and Sony couldn’t find anyone who wanted to partner with them for their new lithium charge controller design (which resolved lithium’s limited lifetime and overcharging issues). They allegedly told Sony to wait 10-20 years so they could get their investment back. But Sony being Sony they wouldn’t settle for less in their camcorders, and just invested enough in building whole new battery factories over the next couple years! The few laptops which used Li-ion in the early-mid 90s (like PowerBooks) all had Sony cells, and because they were so pricey (and had some early issues with fires..!) plenty of companies kept away. I can easily imagine TekTronix choosing to stick with NiMH or maybe even NiCd with known performance characteristics rather than take the business risks. (Especially at their inflated profit margin…!) This is also why we’ve only just started to see lithium-ion AAs and AAAs, as NiMH was cheaper and they found a niche they could recoup some investment in. The lithium ones are still a bit pricier, though I wonder how long that will last. It’s possible when my Eneloops die they’ll be replaced by lithium.

Congratulations for your "new" THS 720! I once bought two of them at a military surplus auction. I gave one as a departure gift to one friend of mine, as he was leaving the company. I kept the other one and still have it. Actually my troubles have been what you already suspected, the battery pack. If I recall, the pack does not use exact C-cells, but slightly shorter ones. Your suspicion about the isolation is, as far as I remember that the charger and external battery connections are well isolated from the scope probes. However, the two probes are only isolated up to +/- 15 V from each other. You should check these from the specifications, just in case my memory is failing me. My excuse is that I also have one Fluke/Philips battery operated scope that also has had battery issues, although it can use ordinary alkaline batteries optionally. Otherwise, the THS 720 works great for me and I have not noticed disturbing amount of slow response. Well, beyond the issues that some screen movements are tied to the trigger, which on a digital storage scope may appear misleadingly slow, depending on the modes and horizontal scale selections.

I use the Tektronix scope for the same reason: testing unknown circuitry with high voltage. I made a replacement battery myself from spot weldering NiMH C battery cells, but after that I noticed that replacement batteries are still available from third parties. Look it up at Amzn!

These scopes are going for about $350 to $750 on Fleabay. That's pretty steep considering you can get a new Rigol 200Mhz bench scope for $300 shipped to your door. Probably more to do with Ebay than anything else. Still it's a cool scope and the one Adrian received is in mint condition.

Fluke scopemeters are still being sold and used today. They are around the same size as the Tektronix one you have there, but better in specs i bet. I use a two channel Fluke scopemeter to this day. But Tektronix was the king of o-scopes back in the day.

I fixed a techtronix 214 and just put all new nicd batts in it. Still readily available. The 214 needs the batts as a capacitor. Won’t even run when plugged into the external a/c without them. Also had shorted tantalums.

You can get those batteries on eBay for about $20-30 The little TV would be handy if you just want to see if a console or computer works, especially if you're not at home or don't want to crawl about behind someones widescreen.

The reason the BNC jacks are plastic is not for high voltage. All inputs are isolated, even the DMM input. Even when charging all inputs are fully isolated. That's the reason I still use this 25-year-old scope.

You could very slightly modify this design to make it so that you can: -Run off the provided pack -Run off D cells -Only allow charging when the rechargeable pack is installed You just need to move the contacts on the battery pack so that they aren't in the same place that the contacts on the d-cells would be.

I'd have saved that foam insert at least long enough to fabricate a replacement one, since it was perfectly shaped for holding the scope and accessories. And you could probably fabricate a tubular battery pack to fit into the scope, something you could charge with whatever charger you have on hand. (nowhere as crude as the way I made a 'battery pack" for some cheap portable cassette player by poking wires into a blister pack of D-cells).

I seem to recall back when 5 1/4 inch diskettes were popular, in the 1970s, you could turn a single-sided disk into a double-sided one by simply cutting a corresponding notch on the sleeve. I wonder if that could be done with 8 inch diskettes as well.

Looks like the LCD TV DC in is a standard 5V connector like the ones you have on the Sony PSP (you can easily find USB to DC cables to use with a smartphone USB AC/DC power unit) or on a lot of portable Mini Disc players.

In defense of the Tektronic "only use our batteries" line. There is a very good reason for that. If you could put regular batteries in there, and attached a charger to the system, the regular batteries would leak or explode (in a mild way), ruining your expensive scope. You cannot recharge regular batteries, you can only recharge "rechargeable batteries", it's in the name! Even rechargeables are different in their charging characteristics, and require different chargers. For example, Lithium polymer batteries should not be charged with a regular lithium ion recharger, even if they operate at the same charging voltage. LiPoly require a slower charging method, and can be damaged if charged by a Li-ion phone charger, for example.

To echo a few other commenters, your best bet to replace the battery in that scope are NiMH cells. I've replaced NiCd with NiMH on a couple machines from that era (HP 200LX and IBM Thinkpad 701c) without any issue and with no need to modify any circuitry since NiMH operates at the same 1.2 volts and charges the same way. Overall that scope is really cool. I'm tempted to pick one up for myself.

I know what you meant by making sure of the center pin on the power input. I used to have an GE Help Full Power 40 Channel 2-way Emergency CB Radio Survival Gear Portable, and I was running it off of AC with a 12 volt adapter with changeable plugs, and one day I was in a rush and grabbed the wrong one that ended up running 12 volts DC to GND, and GND to the 12 Volt DC. Turned it on, and the whole thing GLOWED for 2 seconds before it did it's Marley impression and became as Dead as a Door nail. Whoopsy.

All inputs of the THS700 series oscilloscope are isolated from each other. So, you can measure mains power line without using high voltage differential probes.

So that TV is from back when RCA entered into a deal with Radio Shack to sell retail electronics at RS. That's why it's not an RS brand. It was also around the time that RS was trying to become less of an electronics hobbyist store and more of a retail store like Best Buy. Except that wasn't what people went to RS for, and none of their stores had near enough shelf space to support being a retail store like that. I believe it was shortly after this that they started pivoting hard into cell phone and accessory sales because that was something they had the shelf space for. But it was still far too early because this was before smart phones.

I assume the only customers you might get in your Radio Shack were older people who needed to buy a phone charger. I bought one of those TEK scopes recently. I need to rebuild the battery pack As they are about 100$ new. And that is rather expensive for a NI-CD battery. I paid about 57$ for the scope. Second hand of course. It is in decent condition and just needs a clean. but still works great! The seller said channel one needs to be calibrated, But it does not. The original owner used a really small power supply below the rated voltage and current. Witch caused readings to be inaccurate. But the seller might have not set it up properly either. I did come with one of the original TEK probes but it is missing the clip bit that connects to it. But that is alright. I can Just buy a new one. My one is also missing the rubber battery cover but thankfully I still have the metal part of the cover. So the battery will still stay in there. It was a bargain though. And it is still one amazing scope!

Just scrolling idly through a seller's joblot items on ebay, and there was a Casio TV in one of their joblots that is identical to this RCA one (bar the lack of VHF tuning, owing to it being a PAL model), googling "casio TFT TV" and it seems it's an EV-660 series (there's letters that denote the versions on the end of the number), so yep, it is indeed a Casio made for Radioshack branded as RCA, talk about identity crisis... :P

In the late 90's I worked at Lucent in telephony. I had one of those portable Tek scopes as applications engineer. I can't remember what we paid - if I had to guess I would say $4000 but really don't remember. The display was not great.

Given the battery pack when fully charged is about 4.8v, and a typical Li-Ion is 4.2, if you used some 26500 cells (C-cell size) in parallel, you could make up a stack that would work in there, though would need protection & balancing circuitry too, which could make it a bit more complicated I suppose... :\

@@adriansdigitalbasement2 I have this vague image in my head that there might be a digital receiver out there that supplies a fake CMB if tuning into a channel doesn't work, but I'm not sure if I saw that somewhere of it I'm imagining things. Either way, it wouldn't be the same. That said, I do make allowances for HBO and the MiSTer, both of which use a fake CMB for effect.

I once had a generic 386 clone laptop (I think it was made by Compal) that used an almost identical battery pack using C cells. The pack was dead, and replacement industrial-capacity C cells were way too expensive for something I was just messing about with, but it would run for 15 minutes off ordinary consumer NiMH cells.

If that scope has an output for an external display you should try that and see if it's faster, because even though it can do 25fps the display looks like it's only doing 2fps - lol -.

Haha -- yeah. I should have fired up my RF modulator which does provide a local broadcast so I can properly test TVs like that. I just need to fix the power supply for the modulator and this TV had the video input.
