Total bada$$ and a great way to be introduced to the actor (aside from playing one of the later 007 games at the time and watching him in Mrs. Doubtfire). As for GoldenEye, it's another one of my favorite Bond films of all time. It also introduced me further to the composer behind the film, Eric Serra who I would later say that he heavily inspired me to get into doing film scores of my own and would reference his work quite often. I am a huge fan of his work, especially his collaborations with Luc Besson, but his work on GoldenEye (regardless of what some people say otherwise about the soundtrack) is the pinnacle of his work to me or the triumph of his work, and I love it.

I found it back on 1995, after 6 years waiting 007´s return, a very dissapointed film tht it didn´t live up my expectation. Some actions scenes are so over the top tha it break my suspension of disbilief, like Bond catching the falling plane(Made with a very cheesey special effects) that it does not resist comparition withe the dan scene(Tha it didn´t need cheessey special effects because it was REAL). Things like casting Sean Bean who was an looked a man on his mid 30´s playin on 1995 playing a character who were a child at the end of World War II or the soviet chemical plant changing its location from the botton of a dan to the top of a mountain range proves that the creator of this film were so unconcerned about coherency and raccord as Ed Wood when he filmed his terrible movies.

@davidmeir93482 жыл бұрын
In 1995, the James Bond Franchise was clinically dead. The last Moore film was a decade before (and even then he was clearly too old for the role), and the 2 Timothy Dalton film, while good (especially Licensed to kill) didn't really connect with the audience as they felt he lacked the charm of either Moore or Connery and was too dark. So after he made those 2 films, many Bond fans thought that with the 90's coming and post Die Hard who had changed the face of action films, there was no place for James Bond anymore. And then, came the man who saved the franchise, TWICE, Martin Campbell. Pierce Brosnan was already the choice to replace Moore but he had to refuse because of his ongoing detective serie Remington Steele. This time he was free and accepted the role and and Campbell wisely adapted the character to the 90's, this can also be seen in the action scenes which are more visceral and raw as it was expected post Die Hard. But Brosnan had the suave presence and the charm which most fan expected of the character and in his first movie the role immediately fitted him like a glove. Sadly, the other movies while not too bad (Tomorrow never dies is pretty entertaining) started to get increasingly more over the top until there was a need for another reboot and Campbell came to the rescue again with hands down the best post Connery James Bond movie Casino Royale. A special word for Famke Jansen, Xenia Onatop was an awesome character.

He joined the series back with Live and Let Die and supervised the miniature work from that film through to Goldeneye. He was also an Oscar winner for Superman The Movie, and also worked on Tim Burton's Batman. _Goldeneye_ is pretty much *perfect.* It does everything right. And unique in the Broz run, it's a sharp Le Carre-esque Cold War thriller. Best bit: Bond takes a guy out with a towel and comfortably wipes his brow with it. In 1995, the Bond franchise was dead. No one knew _if_ it could be continued, much less if it could reach the popularity of the Connery/Moore years. It would take a miracle. Brosnan (who'd been fancasted as Bond for a decade) & co pulled it off. And ahead of it's time, the brutal hand-to-hand end fight with 006 is a precursor to the _Bourne_ standard to come.

Nice reaction Shan. I love Goldeneye, top ten Bond for me. It re-energizes Bond and I really appreciate that it swings back to a more traditional formula after License to Kill's, eh, take. Goldeneye performed better at the box office too. It has that special blend and it works here even for a post-Cold War 90s era. I actually love Eric Serra’s weird and sometimes chilling score especially when Xenia (~"Zeen-ee-ya") hunts down Natalia in the kitchen it almost sounds like Terminator. Then later Campbell, Serra, and the cast stage one of the more intense moments in the series all because of Boris’ erratic pen clicking, lol. The hand to hand combat match with Alec while his plan is foiled is classic stuff. Brosnan is great here too but I don’t think he fully comes into his own until the next entry which for me is another top ten Bond movie. Looking forward to that reaction too.

I agree with you, SlyRy, on everything you said from top to bottom. Especially since Serra's soundtrack to me is what got me further into his work and revisiting at least one of the films he did with Luc Besson (The Fifth Element), and then find out later on that some of the same cues sound like one another. Leon The Professional is the prime example to this (even though that film came out the year before GoldenEye did), but also The Fifth Element is just as guilty of it as well but I'm sure some people found out about it already when listening to either soundtracks to those films.

Llewelyn wasn't quite the last vestige of classic Bond at this point. Production Designer Peter Lamont, who took over from Ken Adam with "For your eyes only" (and has been with the franchise in some fashion since "Goldfinger") would stick with Bond until his retirement in 2006. Michael G. Wilson is _still_ around as a Producer. Also, "Goldeneye" was the final movie for Special Effects Designer Derek Meddings who has previously worked on "The Spy who loved me" and "Moonraker" (being nomiated for an Academy Award for the latter). Maurice Binder sadly passed away in 1991. With the exception of "Quantum of Solace", every Title Sequence since 1995 has been designed by his successor Daniel Kleinman. And expect more "Bondian" Scores for the next movies. Although I'm one of the few who actually kind of likes Eric Serras' Score for this one. Overall, this Movie is among my top three Bond-Movies. Great debut for Brosnan and Dench, great Action Scenes and Stunts, a Great Villain with memorable Henchmen/women, one of the best Bondgirls. And like the best Bond-Movies, it strikes a happy middle ground between the fantastical and the realistic, the outlandish and the gritty.

Lovely reaction, Shan. I laughed when you said the music was an odd choice for a Bond movie. The story behind the soundtrack is quite an interesting one. You may notice that a lot of the synthy pads and samples sound like they were ripped from Léon: The Professional - that's because Eric Serra scored both films, and used a lot of leftover samples from Léon. The studio really didn't like Serra's synth-heavy score, yet still used quite a bit. Serra had a very frosty relationship with the producers and Campbell. The producers called John Altman literally a week before the film's release to rescore the tank chase scene and make it feel more like a Bond piece, as Serra's score was far too synth-driven, too eccentric. If the producers knew Altman was so quick at scoring, they would've had him rescore the entire film, alas.

My parents got to go see that telescope and when they asked the tour guide about James Bond, they said they didn't allow the Pierce and Sean to actually fight on the telescope for obvious reasons. 5:20 IIRC the Goldeneye title designer, Daniel Kleinman, (who was actually a storyboard artist and illustrator) got the gig because he had created the motion graphics for Gladys Knight's music video of Licence to Kill. His visuals were very much an homage to Maurice Binder's work, and (arguably) better than what Binder ended up producing for the actual Licence to Kill film. When it came time to do Goldeneye it was kind of a no-brainer for EON to seek him out to see if he would be interested in taking on the title design for their new film. If you look at the LtK music video and then the Goldeneye titles you can see how it is the same guy behind it, with the same kind of compositing and framing arrangements, but still harking back to Binder's iconic work as well. Since then Kleinman has gone on to oversee the 007 title sequences for every film except Quantum of Solace where the director had MK12 handle it instead (since he had worked with them before on a prior movie.)

Pierce brosnan did mention that his inspirations for his take on bond are Sean Connery and roger Moore although more so Connery than Moore because when he gave his tribute to Sean at the AFI life achievement award he mentioned that his first movie that was in Technicolor was Goldfinger and that the actor was a Scotsman and the message that it gave him as young proud Irish Celtic kid was nothing short of beautiful and inspirational hence his great performance in goldeneye

Sean Bean doesn't die in the Sharpe BBC TV series. If you like him as an actor check that series out, well acted great and interesting scripts.

We're back to FUN bond movies! TO me Brosnan and Connery are by far the best Bond actors. Brosnan, Connery and Moores Movies are always fun to watch.

I thought this was the beginning of the Sean Bean dying thing but I could be wrong. As a child of the late 80s and the 90s, this is my James Bond. I also played the N64 Goldenye game. It was my favorite for a long time. While I don't think any Bond movie ages well overall, the nostalgia makes me like all the Pierce Brosnan movies best.

Back in the early eighties the late night show Remmington Steele gave me a glimpse of this guy and I thought to myself (in the midst of Roger Moore era) that he would make an excellent Bond. It took another fifteen years before it came to pass, but I did find out that back at the same time I'd thought on his suitability for Bond, that the producers too had thought this and wanted him for the part back then, but he was tied to the Remmington Steels contract at the time.

Goldeneye is definitely in the top 5 of Bond movies. All the best tropes of James Bond movies are in this one, and done brilliantly. I like Craig's movies, but they're so far removed from what made Bond movies so great. I had to laugh at your comment at the beginning, "Does Sean Bean die in this one?" .... erm, yes and no!

Michael G Wilson is Cubby Broccoli’s stepson. He and Barbara Broccoli are co-producers on all the current Bond films.

Nice that they managed to get Pierce Brosnan for the 007 role at this point, although it was a bit later than was originally intended. When Roger Moore was on his way out from the franchise after "A View to a Kill", they wanted Brosnan back then, but the TV show he was starring in at the time, "Remington Steele", had just been renewed for another season, and NBC wasn't exactly eager to let him do any films like these. Thankfully, he did eventually commit, and he did a great job.

The conversation with him and the woman in the beginning is just weird, and the music sounds like giraffes humping. Then the way Moneypenny just tears into him is like, WTF?! Remember how all the other Bonds entered the series. Pierce enters upside-down in a stall with a guy taking a dump. Watching you laugh at, "she always enjoyed a good squeeze.", made me laugh too.

SHAN - the Radio Telescope is REAL, it's the Aricebo Telescope in Puerto Rico, but a miniature was used for the raising scene. Aricebo is now Decommissioned.

The dish is / was Arecibo which was interestingly in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. It was for studying the universe. Sadly it was damaged by a hurricane and eventually simply fell apart.

I like the Pierce brosnan Bond movies. But can you do more 90 s movies in general? They made the most fun movies in the 90s.
