007: Tomorrow Never Dies PS1 - Military Outpost - 007

First mission of Tomorrow Never Dies for the PS1. I've never played this game before, and it shows on this video trying to get used to the aim system it has - that's dealt with for the upcoming videos, though. I'm using the original PlayStation controller and this game didn't support the sticks, so we're stuck aiming with the d-pad buttons.
TND is one of the two games I had left to upload to have all the old 3D era of Bond games in my channel (Excluding 007 Racing), which means that after this playthrough, I'll just have to upload Rogue Agent before starting with the Craig Era of games. That is if I can properly record Rogue Agent.

This is one of the games I played the most as a child... I remember that at first playthroughs I used to be so stuck at that last locked part of the outpost, not knowing what to do, realizing later it was all about that Satellite destruction that had to be done...my english wasn't so good as well 😅

Everything about this game reads like it's trying to one-up Goldeneye without considering anything about why the N64 title was so good. That's such a 90's way to design a game.

Not really; it’s a third person shooter that plays mechanically different to Goldeneye 007. If it was trying, it would be a first person and Why can’t it try to be different? Why does trying something new result in a game being compared to attempting one-up a game it’s not trying to be. This game wasn’t trying to recapture the magic of Goldeneye, it was trying to stand on its own merit. How you jumped this conclusion, is beyond me.

I had 'Tomorrow Never Dies' for the PS1 and loved it as a kid, but in retrospect, if RARE developed this for the N64 and it was a first-person shooter like GoldenEye it would've been ten times better. The highlight however is probably the soundtrack.

That would be cool, but unfortunately, RARE couldn't do it and moved it to PS1 third-person shooter instead until it was released on November 16 in the year 1999.

Same, I played this growing up and I absolutely loved the soundtrack. Tommy Tallirico composed everything and he's the cousin of Steven Tyler lol. Music obviously runs in their blood haha. Great soundtrack though, so on on point and fits really well. I especially like the more ambient pieces, "Convoy" is super nice. *Edit "Infrared" , "Convoy" was the faster more metal track lol. I just went back to listen to the OST there and realised.

You should try out the Syphon Filter trilogy, WinBack: Covert Operations, Mission Impossible, Mission: Impossible: Operation Surma and the Splinter Cell games for future let's plays.

Especially Syphon Filter and even Mission Impossible (on the N64 because the PS1 version's voice acting is straight trash. Operation Surma wasn't bad for a standalone game. Double goes for Splinter Cell since that's a pure stealth game.

While the game play not be too good, I think the music is awesome. Also be aware of the lives system, you start with 3 and can earn more but the lives do not reset after each level. Say you start at 3 for level 1 and lose 1, the next level you start with 2 lives not 3. Good luck.

He's playing on the hardest mode titled "007". You start with 3 lives on the 1st mission if you play on the easy mode titled "Agent." Add the extra life to 3 and you get 4. But you start with 2 lives on "007" and if you add the extra life, that's how you get 3. The next mission is when he still has 3 lives and he gets the 4th extra life, that is if he saved his status of the game.

I remember that was my first james bond game, still a good game for me because i didn't played goldeneye before it, but i can understand that someone who played goldeneye before this could be lost. And by the way, i never know take someone by surprise and punch him, i knew this was possible when i saw the demonstration of the game. Just a advice, don't try too much with the aim if someone is front of you, just shoot, otherwise, you showed some good tricks that i never did. I just played bully and shoot them.

But the stealth attack is useful, even on the start of the 3rd mission in this game. If you just shoot the goon at the bottom of the staircase, the alarm will go off. But if you perform the stealth attack on him instead, the alarm won't go off.

The reviews were really mixed, according to Wikipedia they ranged from 20% to 72.5%, but most scores were above 50%. The game would have been pretty ground breaking at the time, but at the end of the day it's very flawed, especially by modern standards.

I remember watching my cousin playin this back in 2000 and thinking to myself how amazing this game looked without ever actually playing it. To this day I still haven't played the game itself. Although judging by the comments the controls are wonky as hell. Seems that it took Everything or Nothing (Still my all time favorite Bond game, it's basically the fifth Pierce Brosnan Bond film) to get it right.

This game DOES SUPPORT the sticks, you can even drive using both of them. I don't recommend those though for anything else than driving and skiing.

It does? I didn't try on vehicles but at least on-foot there's no support which I find kind of meaningless if it does support them.

I dunno how Mednafen works here, but on actual console one definitely can use the analogue stick(s) for everything (the back cover of the game case on all regions even says "Analog Controller compatible". Though the sneaking with walking happens with them way too easily, so I usually just D-PAD + strafe as per usual with PS1 games anyways.

Huh you're right, I just checked. Weird, Mednafen does support dual analog and I was able to configure them but they did nothing in-game for me :/. Is aiming better with it or is it still clunky?

The reason I don't recommend analog with walking missions is that it's the same as it would be with a D-PAD anyway, the D-PAD controls are just being done with the left analog stick. Also the sneaking move happens when the stick is at up-left and up-right position while still having "tank controls" with it - so overall I'd say it's somewhat worse (also with TWINE on PS1, when moving with the stick it's like the D-PAD, tank controls, so what's the point). Feel free to try it though if you can/want. Driving on two sticks works well, also skiing with the left stick is fine.

Yeah. I went blind to this playthrough and I find the game enjoyable, but didn't age well at all, not even at the time I think. It's still pretty enjoyable though! GoldenEye at least aged much better compared to this.
