009 Talyllyn Railway Coach 4 & Figure Painting for Model Railways

First video of 2024, and I tackle two jobs, the first is a conversion of the Bachmann 009 Skarloey Railway coach to the Talyllyn Railways coach 4.
The second is painting up me! I got 3D scanned and printed by Modelu at the 2023 Warley show, and the figure is here! yey!

Good stuff, got bit by the train bug after a trip to UK to see the NRWM and tour the narrow gage heritage lines. My son is a lifelong fan of T&F, Wife fell in love with Snowdania and seeing the original hardware and preservation efforts was amazing to me. Thanks for sharing your skill and for keeping the history alive on the Talyllyn.

I have a trick to avoid the paint seeping under the masking edge... Once masked, spray first a thin coat of the first color then once touch dry you spray the final color. The thin coat will create a dam to avoid other paint coats to get under. The paint job is excellent and the figure is nice. For flesh, you could try the Ammo by MiG figure paints flesh set, or the Vallejo one. Both are quite good.

Glad to see your figure is now driving Douglas! Still so amazed at how much weathering can do. I got 2 of the peco NG Christmas vans so I took some of your techniques to one of them and it's amazing how just a black wash and some dry brushed snow brought the wagon from cartoony to real life! Lovely stuff as always!

Those are really thick plastic sides on the Bachmann coach. I guess child proof given the pedigree. I wondered if you considered gluing individual panes in with Glue & Glaze or just using G&G to cover the apertures. I've done both in similar circumstances to provide flush glazing - the first option provides a better finished product but is fiddly and obviously takes a lot longer. PS Great video as always.

Yes that’s my point with the windows, they really do look so thick, where as my westcliff works coaches are scale thin, so much better. I could try individual panes, I hadn’t thought of that. I’ll try it out when I find the time

I like this a lot. I’ve got the Fourdees bogie coach kits so I’m keen to see you do them. Are you going to address the buffer height difference between no 6 and the Bachmann coach? It seems quite big.

I actually don’t have any fourdees coaches, my TR 9 and 10 are westcliff works, but I have painted up fourdees FR bogie coaches for other people in the last, I really like their interiors

Is your Douglas able to pull those coaches since the n scale Percy is so weak?

I haven’t tried it with a full train yet, but yeah it doesn’t have a huge amount of weight, if it struggles, I’ll probably add weight into the body to help pull coaches

Thanks! Yes it’s so cool to be able to have yourself as a model! Well the music on the videos is just royalty free samples that I download from KZbin’s audio archives, but it’s quite common for me to actually listen to fallout soundtracks whilst I work on models! I love the FO76 soundtrack

What is the size and type off making tape you use as when pealing off the freshly painted model it leaves the paint on and still looks like you’ve just painted it. If you don’t mind me asking. Great painting on the little you and coach.

Hi, I typically use Tamiya in a range of sizes - the one I used in this video is 6 mm, but I use 10 mm and 18 mm aswell. I have got 1 mm, but I haven’t managed to use it with a quality finish yet, I think it’s just too thin. I think the quality of the masking tape does have a big impact on pulling paint off when you remove it, so try that. If not, look into your primers

Good question, no idea yet! I’m pretty sure I’ll use Greenwich couplings, so will most likely have to cut a slit in the buffer beam somehow

Well I loved this coach And honestly bachmans Thomas models are better than resin prints for being stronger … I mean I own one of these Thomas themed slate wagons and it got dropped … didn’t even scratch … tho. Wheel popped out so I just went and got that back in the axelbox and it works just fine with no issue Zzz it got dropped from the top of the wooden stairs to the bottom with concrete ….. they’re sturdy

It is better for your needs I am sure I have been taking the kato 11-109 chassis for trams and a kato small England chassis for a side tank that I turned into an engine called the Bertram . If you don’t know Bertram is a Thomas character who is a sibling of duke who is a small England . Then he was meant to be a tank engine . And I found a resin print that I thought it would look cool as his basis to not just make him a repaint of the duke . And how the revrend labelled his duke model as THE DUKE . I will make my Bertram’s name THE BERTRAM . and logically he is made from a part of duke still . With the chsssis of his basis . When it gets made I may take some small insperation from your corris tattoo video to make the style of it perhaps if you don’t mind Love your models . Bye George . Keep up your modelling of the talylln and whenever Bachman makes sirhandel corris 10 would be nice with a railwayseries model of sir handel and a sir Hayden model for talylln .can’t wait for them models in the future .
