I can't use the word fascinating. This is impossible to build. How can a guy walk the roof when they have nothing but the rafters then felt paper. Where's he going to be able to walk safely? I would never even attempt to build. I've been a carpenter for more than 20 years. Sometimes it looks good on paper, but most engineers don't know what it takes to actually build things

This video was posted in 2011. Some Building codes allowed for this "No sheathing"(?) required - ALTHOUGH I would not my house built like this. According to my Allstate Insurance claims adjuster, No housewrap is required by South Carolina building codes, and certainly NOT in Kershaw county, where I live. Found this out after a storm blew the siding off my house, allowing rain water into the house through the gaps in the wall sheathing.

Had to sign into you tube just because the ignorance and lack of intelligence within the comments. For those of you who don't know, this is how to prep a roof for natural stone aka slate or tile. You can still apply sheathing such as plywood, but must use the batton system to allow for the the material to breath, specifically slate. If you apply it straight to sheathing it will rot your roof.

@@joevillarreal9953 standard install in countries that build buildings to last and roof life span is measured in 100s of years and not 10years. Just bc you have been brainwashed by the USA shit building industry to go faster cheaper dummer and no care about waste or life cycle does not make you smart or rellevant. Please expand your horizons and understand that everything in usa that has to do with construction is 100% sheds that constantly need repair, modufication and the owner moving to a new place within 10 years. You dont know what the industry is built on, you total disconnect from quality long lasting buildings. And your comment is a sign that their brain washing has worked.

@kitchen redo Why so Angry?? All I asked was for some decking plywood first BEFORE you start adding layers of complicated rows of roofing material. Of course it's going to last long if you put all those layers on top. What is your REAL problem? US roofing standards or when you someone replies to your comment And reply like an unhinged idiot?
@josephv5346
@josephv5346 4 жыл бұрын
@@joevillarreal9953 i am angry when people just repeat propaganda of the building industry without a moment of tought. I am writing bc most people in the usa follow the BS and your comment (nothing personal with you) just renforce that mentality. There is a cold roof and a hot roof system, there is slate, metal, tile, flat and many other roofing systems they all have been perfected for 100s of years. This particular setup is for tile roofs. One of the main advantages of a cold tile roof is that you can open the tile at any time from the attic and climb onto the outside without needing ladders. You can also replace broken tiles from the inside. The fact that you call for sheathing anywhere in this system is messed up. And it makes this messed up by making a public post. Its like me posting 1+2=678 under a video where a math PhD shows 10 proofs that 1+2=3. So this is a +100year design that has been perfected from the roofing guilds in europe or whatever it was called back then. By 10000s of roofing masters over generations and was done to make the longest lasting and most practical roof support structure. Now you come and say the doesnt matter it needs plywood ontop of the rafters. 1+2=7... i am angry at the ignorance and the implication of the underline idea that shingle roofs are any good. They are a spit in everyone's face by consuming resourses for no reason other then greed

The grill above the facia is intended for ventilation between the water tight membrane and the roofing material (tile, steel, slate, etc). The ventilation ensures rapid drying of any condensation. Air tightness is provided by another membrane on the interior side of the insulation.

Felt paper is trash and hasn't been used on a French roof (where this style of tile and steel roofing is done) for over 30 years. The water tight membranes we lay over the rafters have enough elasticity to forgive a lightly misplaced foot but anything more requires a repair patch and a round of drinks for the crew. A roofer here quickly learns how to be nimble and mindful when walking around on the rafters or they find another trade.

Worst system ever... yeah let's nail a bunch of 2 x 2 s all over the place.. oh yeah and let's not put on any plywood so the building has zero sheer strength...

This is a French roofing system designed for French carpentry specs meaning this system is just intended for protection from the elements, it serves no real structural purpose. If you saw the dimensions and joinery for the underlying purlin beams and trusses you would better understand. I've lived and worked 10 years now as a carpenter and roofer in France and can say the French, with their mix of traditional carpentry and modern materials, build solid and build to last. Makes me chuckle when I see all you Yanks going on about what a flawed system this is because it doesn't resemble the shoddy platform frames you've been building since the 50's.

Oh and the dimensions for the 'lattes' centered on the rafters are more like 1 x 2 (27mm x 50mm) the dimensions and spacing for 'lambourds' or strapping depend on the roofing material; tile is particularly common in the south, metal roofing here in the alpes and slate in the north. Asphalte roofing made a brief appearance here in the 70s and 80s before being banned because they realised what complete trash it was hence there is rarely a need for OSB or plywood as a substrate.

@@TheCariboucanuck Indeed asphalt is trash, but how in hell do you build that without a foot through the unsupported paper? In America we can buy OSB for 8$ a sheet or $16 for Douglas fir plywood, 4x8' . And they are required most places for structural strength. Why work with all those toothpicks? Love that vent behind the gutter though, except on the west coast where we must design for wild fire and embers flying at 80Kph

@@RRaucina because they are profesionals because they stand on the rafters. because they have roof ladders and we can go on and on. and if you still can not work like that then yeah you should not become a roofer in Europe because all the roofs are made like that to last at least 70 years
