Son arrojado al abismo, sostenido y alzado por un coro que lo retoma en eco hasta elevarlo sin reparo. Este es le milagro que logra el Organum Quadruplum, milagro que no cesa de maravillarme. Dada mi escasa imaginación, y la edad declinante, la música aporta un soporte capital a mi vida. Siempre me socorrió a la hora de alcanzar alturas que pocas actividades procuraban (puede que algún orgasmo, tanto como surcar las altas olas del océano o escalar cumbres desde las que se dominaban panoramas excelsos, se acercara a ello). Hoy, en el silencio de una mañana ordinaria, este canto me hace sentir más allá de toda contingencia. Comprendo la revolución que representó en aquél lejano siglo XII este atrevimiento como único modo de acercar la música a lo que ya anunciaba la arquitectura -exceder las leyes de la gravedad y alzar la piedra hasta las nubes. Vencida la piedra, ¿cómo no elevar la voz hasta las esferas celestes? Esa Gran Explosión, la lograrían Leonin, Perotin y otros músicos de Notre-Dame en las postrimerías de aquel siglo que abrió nuevos derroteros a la Edad Media en todas las “artes” e indiscutiblemente en la música. Aquí, tras el cenit que la voz pretende alcanzar, una nube de neumas en pequeñas pirámides irregulares logran la ascensión hasta la pleamar melódica . Este es el milagro, renovado por cuantos saben interpretarlo.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

This music has always been very moving for me. It hit me like a ton of bricks when our Music History professor played it for us on vinyl, back in '88. It led me to listen to Gothic Voices, the Consort of Musicke, and Nigel Rogers, among many others. Every fall, I get back into listening to this wonderful music. I also have some great textbooks on the subjects of Medieval and Renaissance Music, including the writings of Paul Hillier.

This, from the Age of Faith, a welcomed sound in our own age. I know that one need not be Christian or even religious to appreciate this music, so forgive me for speaking from those perspectives. We often equate miracles to "superstition", rationalize them with science, and have sometimes turned Christian ritual - which touches on mystery - into a dumbed down, feel good exercise that has a social or horizontal aspect, but little that is vertical. Perotin's music soars upwards, creating cathedrals of sound, and it takes us with it, to the realms of angels, saints, and the source of creation itself.
