You've certainly opened my eyes to the utility value of the layer selectors! I'd previously thought of the art layers as simply analogous to the sketch rough (underlayer), cleanup (line layer) , color fills (color layer) and extras / effects / hilights / shadows (overlay), but the way you're employing the layer selectors greatly expands on the potential. Thank you so much for sharing these insights!

Layer selectors are the best! The uses are basically endless :D. So glad I can help.

Great tutorial. I use a cutter and a color override. I set up the mask using the eyewhite, then insert a color override, which allows me to create a dawing substitution in skin clour, which takes the form of a blink.

My motto is "if it works, it's right" lol. I do know a few riggers who really hate the colour override. It can be a bit testy at times, and if you're working in a big production it's not uncommon for designers to re-colour things willy-nilly. It also saves the effort of teaching baby-animators how to fix broken colour overrides haha. The layer selectors are a little safer and easier. :)

Stylus Rumble I find the layer method confusing, but make no mistake I will persevere to learn how to do it. The other question I wanted to ask you is that with more than one character on screen the node view becomes chaotic. Is there a way of sorting out the chaos?

The easiest way is good grouping and not being afraid of adding more composites. In a big scene during production, each character is in it's own group, and then those groups can be organized into bunches that share a comp+display. The backgrounds will have it's own comp. Taking a bit of extra time at the beginning of your scene to organize everything into a tidy, useful way will really help you with your workflow. Sometimes I have 2 networks open so I can look in 2 character groups at the same time. Once you get the hang of the whole network thing it's a huge help :)

I think it mightve been that my TBH version is updated but oh boy took me forever and lots of pausing to find out how to do the layer selector. Started thinking it was a plug in that I didnt have, but no you have to add the layer selectors separately and edit the settings to be line art or colour art individually. Only saying this cus someone else might have that issue. I kept trying to replicate you's cus yours came up with 3 separate layer selector nodes, but mine just had one. still a good tutorial; you might go fast and I might need to constantly pause and go back, but youre not boring which is all I need to stay engaged haha.

...Where did the other one go? If it's gone this is a tech support problem, not an animator problem lol

Hi Tracy! I cannot get the eye with envelope deformer to work! I have tried for hours, and I cannot find I am doing anything wrong. Can you help me out? I use Harmony Premium 15. The problem is this: The white of the eye (in color art layer) goes outside of my linework in the line art layer. It moves when I move the deformer handles, and stops when I reach the limit of the matte. All else seems okay, but I cannot have the white of the eye spilling outside of the lashes :-(

Are you using a cutter to mask the eye white?

how would you a character's butt for a walk cycle
@StylusRumble7 жыл бұрын
This can vary a lot based on the design of the character. It might help to look at shows with a similar design and watch them to see where the parts are broken up. It Helps to make lots of layers for things like pockets, crotch line, zipper line, if it's complex. If it has a lot of detail there might not be a simple, automated solution. I can definitely put butts on my video list. :)

please put butts on the videos list. that would be great!

How we can make it blink with Lashes ??
@StylusRumble5 жыл бұрын
The easiest way is to do drawing substitutions with them drawn on. It will get the best results. Trying to rig a fancy eyelash rig always ends up a mess and animation spends too much time mucking about with it.

@@StylusRumble noo i want without "drawing substitution" 😭😭
