In this video we cover shielded wires used in applications such as crank and cam sensor signal wires. This video outlines using solder splices to ground the braided shielding.
You can find solder (shielded wire terminator) sleeves here:

thanks man. I need some of those terminator sleeve's. working on computer with wires as thin as a hair follicle. stuff will drive to the looney bin

It can be tedious for sure! These sleeves work out really well!

It would great, if you could share information of temperature for the heating device.

Nice explanation. So the shield gets connected to the “-“ of the power supply? (Using a ac/dc power supply) Tks

My A/C wall unit is newer and it has a bare wire wrapped in aluminum foil. It's made for "Safety." It also has a reset button on the plug. My dog bit through 2 places. I repaired it, but it will not work without the bare thin wire. I tried replacing the wire, to no avail.

Would you do this to both sides of a wire when trying to splice it and then connect the wires that have been soldered to the shield to each other? Also my shielded wire has tin foil underneath the braiding, can I remove it or is that important for the functioning of the shield?

Good question, it is a little unclear in the video but this method is somewhat specific to this type of cable. This style of cable has a braided mesh through the entire length that acts as a shield, it has no way to connect the braided mesh shield to the ground. Therefore you have to create a way to connect the shield to a wire so this is a method. Generally you only do this on one side of the cable, the shield is usually grounded to the ecu but not on the sensor end. You would also use this method if you want to pass the cable through a bulkhead (on each side of the bulkhead) Other types of shielded wire have the tin foil, (that is the shield instead of the mesh) but they usually have a bare wire that is run through the entire length so the method in the video is not required. One benefit to NOT having the bare wire run through the length of the cable is size, the cable without bare wire is less bulky.

Could you please do a video of how to terminate a shielded wire though a Bulkhead Connector, Is it true that you just run the shielding though a separate pin and connect it back through the connector and then back into the same shielded wire? I think this video kinda answers my question!? Subbed BTW!

SovL:Remedy yes, you would create the same thing the video showed on each side of the connector and crimp the terminal (pin/socket) onto the shielded wire and send it through the connector. This wire method keeps the harness a little slimmer than using a cable with a bare shielded wire running all the way through.

Use NASA cable and harness workmanship standards speciation as your guide. It is publicly accessible online. A properly soldered joint that uses heat shrink tubing will beat this method of termination every day of the week.

Do you connect both ends of the shield to ground, or just one end to ground and float the other end?
@mavenperformance
@mavenperformance 4 жыл бұрын
Norman Childs, just one side, usually there is a pin in the ecu for this purpose. Grounding both sides can cause other issues

if you do both ends, you'll create a ground loop. always on one side. If your ECU doesn't recommend draining to signal ground, you can drain to the engine or chassis. In airplanes they often drain these grounds directly to the back of the cannon plug
