I sew. That's my "big" hobby - you know how most of us do myriad hobbies, but there's always one that holds a special place in your heart? One you'd never abandon? That's sewing for me. I make quilts, dolls, clothing, etc., but I started with hand embroidery. It was love at first sight. It was painting with thread. I could create anything my mind could conjure, and it was dizzying trying to keep up with my ideas. Such is love. For many years, I'd seen people cross stitching and wondered why they enjoyed it. It was so different from the embroidery I did. Cross stitch seemed stifling, fixed, and, frankly, tediously monotonous, particularly when compared with free hand embroidery and its profusion of stitch types and flexibility. One day, I was making a gift for a friend (it was a fabric book cover for a book of poems), and the fabric had a teeny checked pattern. For some reason, I decided to create a design on the checks with cross stitch. I found a vintage French pattern online and adapted it for my friend. I used vintage French silk thread I'd found at an antique store, which added to my overall delight. It was like breathing a new flavor of oxygen! Just deliciously fun and beautiful! Since that time, I've rearranged my hierarchy of hobbies, and cross stitch (as stuffy as it may sound) has moved into the number 1 spot.

I feel you 100%!!! I sew a bit too, there's quilt tops and half-finished dolls just waiting for me to get back to it... Your sewing skills sound amazing, those thread painting embroideries and that fateful cross-stitch gift for your friend! It all sounds so wonderful, the fabric book cover for a poetry book, the tiny pattern, the fun and beauty of something new! The vintage silk adds so much tenderness and charm to the gift...what a lovely friend you are 💕 I've started some cross stitch projects over the years but never finished them because they got so tedious halfway. But then I discovered petit point dollhouse miniature carpets! I'm planning to stitch a couple of little rugs for my next project, hopefully I have the perseverance to finish... Any tips or favourite cross stitch channels to recommend? I always find that watching others work on their projects motivates me to work on mine 😂
@SmittenKitten.4 ай бұрын
@@mminmakes You are beyond kind! Thank you for being such a skilled artist AND having the capacity for such thoughtfulness. These are true gifts!! Petit point is a different level of skill! I wanted to make a vintage-looking rose pendant for a friend, and the detail scared me! I was able to finish it, but it took much longer than I anticipated. I've seen some beautiful examples of petit point on antique hairbrushes, and they are too beautiful for words. Can you imagine brushing your hair with such an object? I would so love to see your work! Yes, cross stitch can be SO tedious, which is why I initially couldn't pick it up. The monotony was too much. Well, I happened to fall ill and needed to spend many days in bed, and oh my gosh, I was so bored! So I decided to try cross stitch again. This time, the monotony didn't bore me, it soothed me. All the anxiety and pent-up irritation from being stuck in bed melted away because I could mindlessly stitch. After I recovered, I found that anytime I was anxious, I could sit down, put on some music or an audiobook and stitch myself calm. You get into a slow rhythm that has a way of both focusing your attention and letting it drift. It had become a panacea for me! I doubt I could offer you any tips, simply because I'm guessing your fine work is far superior to mine, but one tip I do have is this: only stitch things you absolutely love You're going to be spending so much time staring at the piece, it only makes sense to love every single stitch! Thank you for all you do! You are such a gift!
@mminmakes4 ай бұрын
@@SmittenKitten. That rose pendant sounds wonderful! Yes, I've seen some vintage purses and brushes with the loveliest petit point. It seems incredible that people would just use these things in their daily life! I'm glad you found cross stitch again at a time where it helped soothe you and tide you through your illness. And even better, that it became such a source of peace in your daily life 💕💕💕 I'll keep in mind the advice to stitch what I love... Thank you for the lovely words and encouragement. Happy stitching!

I was a creative little child and I loved to try all sorts of new ways to create. We couldn’t afford much so my mom would take me to Hobby Lobby and we would go straight back to the clearance section and I would get to choose one thing to take home. Right beside the clearance section, tucked away in its own little magical corner, was all of the miniature dollhouse items. I always dreamed of being able to afford to make miniatures as a hobby. It’s hard for me to work with miniatures now because of my unsteady hands, but I still love to watch others work. Absolutely gorgeous and I thank you for sharing your creations with us. Thank you for sharing your creative process. Your presentation instills a sense of peace that is not easily achieved viewing ASMR content. The video incorporates more than a miniature build. Sharing portions of personal experiences entertain as you demonstrate the construction and pitfalls incurred as the miniature objects unfold. Knowing the room's history brings it to life and gives it meaning, a reason for existing. I'm look forward to your next story build. For applying glue, one thing you might try is a 'silicone brush', it looks like a fan brush but solid silicone instead of bristles. Hobby stores tend to sell them around where they stock casting epoxy and resin supplies. Similar premise to what a woodworker might use; though the larger tool looks more like a big basting brush or paint roller. Upside is the flexible head makes it easier to spread out a nice thin and even layer of glue; and the silicone means you can peel the glue right off so cleaning the brush is a cinch. I have even used this with epoxy in the past, and there are these clay tools that are like mini versions of this, they also work so long a they're silicone. They might be good for when you need to glue up really tiny pieces. Also just another note since you mentioned how the wood glue is gritty - an old carpenters trick is to add salt to your glue; the added grit keeps pieces from sliding around when clamped up. No idea what Elmers glue uses, but it's doubtless why they add grit.
@mminmakes6 ай бұрын
Thank you, this is wonderfully helpful!! I've got to keep an eye out for those silicone brushes. I tried using toothpicks but the glue does build up and it seemed wasteful to keep using new ones. I hate cleaning brushes and palettes so peeling the glue off sounds like a dream. I do prefer the gritty texture of that wood glue over regular white glue! Makes sense to have it with bit of 'grip' so things don't slide around when you apply pressure.
@nonamo57006 ай бұрын
@@mminmakes If you can't find the kind of brush I mentioned, you could maybe use a silicone spatula (like for frosting); I've occasionally seen small ones that wouldn't be too inconvenient to use. You could also always modify the spatula; cutting it to a more useful size or shape. I did something similar with a basting brush, cutting the bristles shorter so they didn't flop glue everywhere Best of luck, and good work!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your work!!! I'm in awe of how you build each piece from scratch! And the fact that you designed your own room and built it to scale is just inspiring! I am a book maker and binder, and junk journal maker too. So I want to make some tiny book charms and pieces to be a background for my video flip throughs of books. But I'm nervous to start making a miniature bookshelf since I've never made one before. I'm sure I'll be very slow. Maybe I'll start by making the stacks of books. That, I can do! Thank you for the inspiration and resources list. I'm not a new subscriber!
