Recycle, reuse. Rob, you can obtain a motor from an LG or Fisher and Paykell direct drive washer which saves wiring your own. They are 3 phase and can be rewired in a variety of configurations and supply approximately 400W in a stiff breeze with the right turbine. The stator is laminated to reduce Eddy currents and the ceramic magnets can be replaced with neos for the best O/P.

So if you want more current over voltage, you'd need thicker gauge wire correct? What happens if you keep one of the mini mite's coils as the hair thin wire and the other as a heavier gauge? They'd probably not be in series, but I would think you'd be splitting the difference as far as how much of the input power you'd recover as V and I.

Does it have to be a close wound solenoid coil or could it be made from a basket weave coil having space between the windings ?
@wheee649 ай бұрын
Could you share the length (or weight) of the wire you used in both kinds of windings (individual bolts or one winding around the whole thing). I'm curious if the efficiency is similar (voltage generated per length of wire assuming the same drill speed). My thought is that the single coil is less efficient because the south magnets are also putting field through the coil when the norths are on the bolts, whereas in the individually wound bolts, the south field goes outside of the coils.

Maybe I missed it, but does the thickness of the enamelled copper wire make a difference or any gauge will work?
@revmsj Жыл бұрын
It makes a difference in that the thicker the wire is, the less length you’ll be able to shove into a given winding. So thinner gauge wire tends to give you a larger voltage potential. Of course ultimately less amperage could be handled by a thinner wire but as he’s already stated, high amperage will never be an issue with this design.

Does adding a second disc of magnetics on the opposite side of one winding make much difference in to optimize the generator? It seems it would be harder to turn… stronger field? and connecting each pair of magnets? which would now need something like a split drive shaft to exit power for the now entrapped coil… and inelegant brushes?
@revmsj Жыл бұрын
So long as the 2nd array of magnets are oriented the exact same, there should be a net increase in electrical potential output. However, if you do not get the magnetic fields lined up exactly, you begin to cancel out the magnetic field’s flux, and thereby adversely affecting the potential output. And yes, any increase in electrical potential produces an associated increased back EMF so it would necessarily increase the resistance to turning, but only under increased load.

Omg I Busted a Gut Laughing from hearing you laugh seeing the Energy Generation of a single Coil generator... so funny I would like to see if it's possible using gearing to up the RPMs by stepping up the Speed of the center rod. I'm referring to the Gears on a 10 speed Bike that has varied Gears that the Bike chain is repositioned to spin the Tires faster while We Pedal at a slower rate after we pedal the bike the tires spin easily when we first start to get going. After we get going pedalling faster to start, we then can reduce how fast we pedal by adjusting the Gear shifters controls until We get to Pedal Slowly but achieving More RPMs to Step up multiple Spins of the wheel Tire RPMs but pedalling slowly. 1:1 up to 4 wheel rotations to 1 Full Pedal rotation. If We set up the the same gearing setup and connecting the Gearing to the Center shift of the Generator - The Rotations being increased to take the wind power turning the Wind Turbine on its own that turns a tire chain that connects to step up gears on the center Generator Rod turning the Generator 4 x faster or whatever is ratio ends up being. Just thinking how to turn the center Generator Rod multiple times faster.

I have a question. If you create the small generator, as you have, with the small amount of offset in two halves to eliminate the “stall” if that is a satisfactory term, what if you repeat that on your disc in a larger diameter. Each successive winding would be just enough larger as to not interfere with the previous winding. The holes in the disc would appear in a sort of vortex so the each ring of holes had the necessary offset. More and more magnets would be required for each successive winding. I could imagine 30 rings on each side. That would continually increase the mass of the windings. If each ring required an inch for clearance then the total circumference would be around 60”. If you printed a vey large helical rotor it would take more wind and I would imagine and much larger bearings to eliminate drag. Once it got moving the mass of the windings would act as a flywheel. My concern is this. You mentioned that if the windings around your bolts In the first example had to be very uniform in weight to function properly. Would that also be true in my concentric ring model. If so the the inner rings would have to be thicker and then each successive ring would have to have the same mass as the first. Essentially getting thinner at each ring to maintain the same mass. I could foresee it being an expensive experiment but maybe it would produce more than milliamperes. Don’t forget that the input like wind or falling water is free.

Now if i want it to make 12vdc could you rectify it then put through a transformer for slightly better amperage? ?
@TnTOmnibus Жыл бұрын

@revmsj Жыл бұрын
You’d want to transform first as transformers don’t work for DC. Of course if using for wind, it may be difficult to get a steady voltage because of wind speed variations, so it would probably be necessary to use a voltage regulator of sorts. I guess something like a buck booster or whatever it’s called may work somewhere in circuit. It’s very doable though obviously, as wind mill generators are a commercially available thing. You know, I’m with you and I think I’ll jump into doing just that…

Off hand, I would think that if you created another generator coil or two or more, you could place them inline on the same input shaft and connect the wires to link them in parallel. The output voltage would be reduced, but the current would be increased. Ultimately, the output will be the same power.

Hi Rob, can you explain the purpose of the heat shrink as I was originally thinking it was to insult and prevent the coil from being in contact with the bolt...however do the washers bridge between the coil and the bolt removing the insulation the heat shrink provides? What is the specification of the copper wire used? Another suggestion, most of the projects directly drive the generator, could you instead drive a large wheel with a belt to drive the generator, 1 turn of the large wheel would be several or many turns of the generator and hence a lot more output ?
@MushInSkull Жыл бұрын
The threads are sharp and the shrink wrap is to prevent the threads from cutting into the enameled surface of the magnet wire. It's not to insulate and protect the wire from being in contact with the bolt. The wire has an enamel coating that insulates it. If the wire didn't have an enamel coating, the wire coil would short circuit and instead of thousands of turns, it would be one.

With this hydrolic we can create tons of power, (newton) if we convert this Newton to kw, regarding calculation the potental electrical output is more than the hydrolic imput. There are also electric hydrolic at the market, 12vDC 2Ampere with a outupt of 800N, this meens in theory the potential electrical output is bigger than the imput. Connect the hydrolic to a genarator and you might have more output thab input.

I'm surprised you didn't leap on the serpentine arrangement with the copper weaving towards an inner ring of bolts. I like the carriage bolt improvement. I am curious to know if a shorter bolt would reduce the output significantly... What is the perfect bolt length? What if you did concentric rings at different voltages? I agree that wind is a necessary component of a diverse energy portfolio.
@scotttovey Жыл бұрын
A shorter bolt does not have to equal less output. Keep in mind that it is about the length of the wire. If you put shorter bolts with larger OD washers that enable you to wind the same length of wire onto the shorter bolts, you would get the same output.
@revmsj Жыл бұрын
Shorter bolts with a fatter wind may actually be beneficial because more of the wire length would ultimately make and break contact with the magnetic field. There’s no way the bottoms of those tall coils are within the magnetic fields of those tiny magnets no matter how strong they may be…
@scotttovey Жыл бұрын
@@revmsj That's not how it works. This set up uses to bolts to bend the magnetic field so that it is moving across the wire in a way that enables the generation of electricity. The magnetic field transfers into the bolts making the bolt temporarily transforming the bolt into a magnet. When the magnet moves away from the bolt and the next magnet which is set opposite (north south north south), it changes the direction of the magnetic field in the bolt. As a result, the coil is within the magnetic field of the bolt and that magnetic field is shifting from north to south thereby creating an alternating current. If the magnet's field was not transferring into the bolt, the device would not generate electricity because the copper wire would not be moving at a right angle through the magnetic field properly.

@@justinw1765 "would using a more highly magnetic bolt, like a more iron rich metal, work better than the stainless steel that is being used?" First, I don't think Robert would have used stainless steel. He would have went with the standard off the shelve bolts that are more ferrous than stainless steel. It is a good bet that using iron bolts or rods, will result in stronger current generation as a result of there being less resistance to the magnets magnetic flux. How much of an improvement can only be determined through experimenting.

I am thinking that this looks like a prime candidate for a windwall setup. one of these at the top and bottom of spindle axles going thru the vertical wind you want, going say 6 feet tall, 8 inches wide, times maybe 10, and another wall at 90 degrees if the wind is very irregular where you set it up, and carry up the leads of the generators to 16 or 12 gage electricians wire. take that over to your regulator set up and storage. I personally am looking at a mixed storage of hydrogen(via metal hydride flasks) and a standard battery bank system, so the battery levels out most of the flow, and the hydrogen goes to some burning engine for long down times.
