I watched this game live with my brother and dad. I'll never forget Al McGuire's "He's gotta throw under the basket, under the basket... Holy Mackeral! Holy Mackeral! Holy Mackeral!" He had the best combo of basketball knowledge and flair--my favorite basketball analyst college or NBA of all time.

He also referred to a USC player being on the Cal team a trojan he said to try to make up for the mistake

I was 9 years old, that day I threw up in an ice cream parlor with stomach bug. Threw up all day. My Dad, GT alum, and I huge fans, watched that whole game and when he hit that shot I ran around and threw up again lol. Will never ever forget this shot.

We had some great games in Milwaukee that year. Memphis also upset Arkansas in a close game in the other second round game. My Dad (RIP - 2019) let me play hookie from high school and took me to the games. What great memories. That shot was right near where we were sitting.

I already was a fan of college hoops from the crib, but this play is forever tattooed to my brain as a snapshot of why I love this tourney so damn much. Remem watching this live as a little kid, CBS had zipped here with less than 3 secs remaining (perhaps IU's early rd game, feels like they beat LSU and Shaq, had literally just gone final?) I don't care or know anything about either team and actually forgot USC was the opponent until searching for this today, but everything about this clip in Big Dance perfection: less than a second, crazy heave from a dude that wasn't squared up (who IIRC hadn't mad a 3 all year), to the swish, to the dude by the rim who jumps 3' appearing to almost hit his head in excitement, to those 3 players leaping in unison together, to Al Mcguire yelling holy mackerel. Everything about this is perfectly and utterly March. CBS couldn't film an original commercial that's better than this.

Jaymz Hetfield Same, In Colorado they switched to this game with 2.2 seconds left. I remember it so vividly as well. I was 12 at the time. Georgia Tech had a lot of future NBA players. I’m surprised Forrest didn’t have much of an NBA career.

Well James Forest had a monster sophomore yr when he should have turned pro, he come back his junior yr and unfortunately tore his ACL and never was the same again.

Take a look at Jon Barry's pass at the tail end of the run that starts at 13:11. Wait for it. Wait for it! Wow! WHAT A PASS! Oh, those Barry boys were so fun to watch! I watched this with Stan Sears, who loved Tech basketball and died a Tech man.

Lakers had James Forrest for a year. Didn't get much play. He was a bit of a tweener 3/4. Come to think of it, Lakers drafted Duane Cooper of USC that offseason, 92. He never could solidify a role as back up point on a team that really needed one. Lakers had Jon Barry for a season, too. 1998 I think. I hated him. USC got a bit dicked there. They were the 2nd seed and had to travel to Milwaukee? Man, that's like a punishment.

As great as Maguire's call was, he totally stole the reins from Stockton there. It's Stockton's call and I could imagine him being kind of ticked off about not getting to be the iconic call there. Michael Kay calls it being stepped on. Don't get me wrong, it makes for a great highlight and all but still.

When you’re out of timeouts, you gotta get the ball inbounds. That was a lucky break that the ball got dribbled off the USC player’s foot. Gotta feel bad for USC, but that’s a heck of a shot
