That switch is very important! My trans was giving me 3rd gear starts at times. I also noticed months before I could not start my Yukon in neutral. Per my tans man I went to the dealer and replaced that part. I scribed on the side of the trans case and put the new one exactly like the old one. Trans has worked like it should going on 1 year now.

Were you seeing 3rd gear on the cluster when the gear shift lever was supposed to be in Park? Or were you looking at a diagnostic readout indicating the actual transmission gear versus where thegear shift lever position? How did you know it was a 3rd gear start...

Right, cable and shifter are in sync with the mechanical detentes on the column that is why there is an adjustment on the cable. Normally that does not need to be adjusted. If you do need ajustment, once you have the shifter in sync with the detente on the column it is time to make the final adjustment on the switch. The readout on the display was slightly out of sync that was what the delay in low was. That is why there are adjustment slots on the switch. With a new switch you should start from neutral and bring it into adjustment, from there make the finale adjustments from neutral to hit park or low as needed. Test it by making sure it starts in neutral and park.

you got the right idea - the shifter cables for those trucks are 2 pcs. - front half and back hal fand it seperates at the white clips - if you look close enough - you'll see that its threaded- undo the locking clips (the white ones) and turn it half a turn in either direction and it will adjust itself.

I thought maybe you could answer this. I need a shifter cable for a workhorse step van I got, but can't find the right size. I need an 82"cable and I found one that is 84". Could you make it work?

Probably so, I think there’s room for a little extra.

There are no detentes on the column. They are all on the cam inside the transmission. Remove the cable from the transmission shift shaft and the shifter moves smoothly with no detentes. The neutral safety switch indicates the gear electronically. It must be centered on the shaft properly. The notch on the black plastic housing of the neutral safety switch should line up between the two bumps on the inside black plastic ring that turns with the shaft.
