Here is my big issue. many opinions on how to clean a chain and what type of fluids and brushes to use. I called several manufacturers about O and X ring chains none of them have clear instructions or information available for the end user. They obviously want you to keep buying a new chain. Also the various videos on you tube never advise to remove the sprocket cover and clean this area. Under the front sprocket cover has the most build up of old chain wax or similar on this is full of dirt and grit. If you dont clean out this area then it gets hot and shortens the distance between cleans... unfortunately in this video no torque wrench used. this is important.

While I'm sure Karen is adept at dealing with nuts, someone really needs to show her how to use spanners properly before she takes the edges off.

You need something that's o-ring safe for cleaning the chain and IMO you shouldn't use a wire brush to clean it either. Spray with a chain cleaner (Maxima Clean Up is good) or spray WD40 on a rag and wipe off.

What about washing down the degreaser? As I understand, she just whips the degreaser off with a towel and sprays lubricant onto the chain afterwards. Guess what the remaining degreaser will do to your fresh grease.

Remove rings and watches when working on the bike. Also have had sprocket tooth go in through my fingernail before due to rag caught in sprocket and wheel inertia pulling hand in. So now always turn wheel forward and only wipe top of chain with rag..

yes u can use kerosene, it is a very good chain cleaner. despite the ignorant remarks, it will do no damage to your o-rings. some owner manuals even suggest using kerosene.

Just curious, but why not use a solvent like Kerosene. Many manufacturers actually tell you to use ONLY kerosene. Kawasaki for example does and I have not read through my CBR manual yet. ( I actually came to this video just hoping it was a CBR bike so I watch someone else do it before I go outside to do it myself ) ALSO: NOWHERE IN THE VIDEO DOES SHE ADJUST THE CHAIN, haha! Nor does she do any kind of chain alignment. You should ALWAYS check slack length and alignment with every chain inspection. It takes literally 60 seconds to do it and it could save your life. For others who are watching, you don't need to buy some fancy brush. Just go buy a hard bristle brush from the hardware store for $4. While you are there, pickup a can of Kerosene for $5. Grab a plastic sheet so you don't screw up your driveway $4. And a set of gloves $3. For under $20, your ready to take of your chain for life. Even better, log onto Amazon and purchase a 100millimeter ruler (Each manufacturer has a recommended chain slack length and you need a ruler to measure it), and a laser chain alignment tool. I prefer the accuracy of lasers even though it's a bit pricey because I don't want any problems at 150mph. Chemistry tip: Denatured alcohol works great as a solvent for road grime and does not leave residue. I use it to clean my rearsets, swingarm and anything else that get's funky. But do not use alcohol for your chain. Only Kerosene, or whatever your manufacturer recommends.

I never saw a tape measure used or torque wrench. Let's see here spray windex on chain, dab it with a rag, loosen bolt and screws - tighten back and spray on chain lube. uhmm I think we already knew that. I would use a chain cleaner instead.

Yes, you are correct Jerry, chains only stretch. On Suzuki street bikes the axle has a taper where the axle nut threads on. Also, the inner diameter hole on the axle block is sized to the NON-tapered portion of the axle not the tapered part. So when you tighten the axle nut, it pulls the axle into the axle block hole filling the extra space and tightening the chain just a little more.
@BadWolfRacing68
@BadWolfRacing68 11 жыл бұрын
If you flip the axle so the nut is on the other side, it keeps the axle block from walking back. Also, it also important to point out to people "chains do not shrink, they only stretch", so if your chain tightens up, you need to verify everything is being tightened correctly :)

The part with the rider on the bike while adjusting the chain is usually not mention by other youtubers. My bike seems to have chain with too much slack but once you sit on it, the chain is just perfect.( I had my brother check the tension.)
@Dahoon
@Dahoon 9 жыл бұрын
TheCanyonhopper read the factory service manual for your bike and you'll see how it is supposed to be done, unlike watching this video. On my Suzuki it has to be on the side stand and then have a specific rate of movement while on my very old Kawasaki it has to be on the centre stand, have 10kg weight applied to the lower part of the chain and then be adjusted. Using a rule of thumb measure or incorrect adjusting methods, like in this video, will most likely make the chain too tight or loose while riding since none of them adjust according to the movement of the rear-wheel (which differs on each bikes). This is amateur work. Notice she also greased a chain with degreaser still on it...

Dahoon Thanks for the heads up. My ktm rc 250 does state that the chain tension be adjusted on side stand and it was also done by ktm's own service center.
