Quick instructional video depicting how to disassemble and reassemble the lock cylinder housing from a 2003 Volkswagen golf drivers door, for cleaning or recoding. Process should be similar for other makes and models and identical on all mk3 Volkswagens.
This is my first instructional video, hope it helps you out.

Thanks for the video, helped me to strip my lock down and realize that part of it was broken which was causing it to not unlock or lock my car. Great video and very informative

This worked for my VW Polo. Same mechanism in it. All the other vids on here dont show how easy it actually is to rotate the spring and compress it using the outer collar piece. Sorted..Many thanks.

Appreciate the tutorial! The spring was definitely a challenge to get back in properly. I actually found the initial disassembly portion more useful than the reassembly portion when it came to putting everything back together. Thumbs up!

Hey Alex this tutorial was raelly helpful. Just want to add that the spring needs to be tensioned when reassembling the cylinder so that the key springs bak to the upright position after locking/unlocking. There is another video demonstrating this quite well, but your dissassembly tut is superior.

Thank you. Your video was useful. I bought a repair kit that was out of specifications and i nedded to sand some parts and use new and old parts to get that thing worrk. Now it is working but without the spring effect but the spring is important to keep the assembly. The car has 20 years. Not perfect but working.

Great video. Same lock fitted to Polo. I found my lock was clogged with what I would guess wound be detergent containing wax, and the wax had solidified within the barrel. Had to use a mallet to remove the barrel out of the sleeve. Some pins wouldn’t remove but didn’t prove to be a problem when reassembled. Took numerous attempts to replace the main spring.

Worked for me. Thanks very much. The 'ring' part at time 1:33 is different on my 2004 Jetta (doesn't twist, comes straight out, and has a little detent that prevents the twist motion). --I Nearly lost my mind trying to get the spring back in!!! Had to use the longer screwdrivery looking piece to compress the spring while twisting the ring part with a wrench, thereby twisting the spring+ring until the ring detent sat properly. It took me an hour to finally get this last bit all-together... good luck to others! Nice to have a lock again!

Good video mate, my lock had solidified lithium grease and I ended up taking mine all apart on my polo lock and put everything in a ultrasonic cleaner with degreasing solution, it cleaned up everything. I then re greased everything and put back together. Looks and works like new again.

I took mine apart and put in a ultrasonic cleaner, all parts came out sparkling like new. I also changed the barrel tumbler plate springs with new ones. Like yours i had loads of that white stuff all over it. A bit of advice never use Wd 40 on it after cleaning as all that white stuff will come back. Only use a 3 in one lubricant with PTFE

Thx for the video. Fixed my 97 passat lock. Just make sure you put the pieces under and above the spring in correct position. You can assemble it wrong way and then the key won´t turn well and the spring works wrong way (returns the key when turning lock, not unlock). In my case the first part, C-shaped socket, had to be facing in the other way than in this video.

Hi, I did this yesterday with an new beetle lock. Your video helped me a lot! Disassembling and cleaning was very easy with your clip. Unfortunately I had some issues reassembling it, because I didn't look at the spring before I removed it (eventhough you said to do so) and you don't show the reassembling part in detail.
