03c Planar Tracker - Rotation [Mocha Essentials]

This exercise looks at shots with more complicated movement. We continue in learning about how to identify potential problems and how to avoid them, before tracking. As the shots get more complex, the Track Motion level gets higher too, and we introduce Scale and Rotation into our arsenal.
Importantly, we see the first things we should change when a shot doesn't want to track with the default settings.
At the end of this video, you will be more confident in identifying areas to track, offseting the surface, and fixing problems tracking rotating objects.

Nice! Could you help with two questions: 1. I remember from other tutorials of you that you say that when there's a change in z space - we should use perspective. Here you said we should use scale (4:35). What did I miss? 2. In 15:10 you changed the position of the shape. In general, where should I reposition it to? to a place with less motion blur? Thanks!

Hi. Absolutely I can try to help : 1) There's a couple of small things here. If the movement is straight forwards and backwards then scale will be tracking this through fine. If there is any z-space _rotation_ then you'll want to track perspective. If you only need the transform data and not all four points, for example for rotoscoping, then you can often get away with just scale too. 2) Yes, that's it. You want to find something that is co-planar with the other tracking, and doesn't have a lot of blur or undefined edges. As we saw in this example, too much motion blur is tough, or if we were trying to track a plain wall, we'd want to find a few small markings at the edges for Mocha to hold on to.

Why are you always demoing simple shots? I’ve been doing films, and all kind of thing and I never faced footage so perfect, so pristine. Real life, real LA work is not picnic. When Directors come to us, the footage is out of focus, shaky camera, bad lighting, etc......I humbly suggest you to try difficult and complex shots. I used Mocha in extremely complicated situations and it works. But with these simple shots, you’re missing your audience........just a thought.......

This is a Mocha course for people starting their journey in Mocha. And it's exercise 3! When someone is learning to drive you don't put them behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler, that would be ridiculous. You show how things work and build up knowledge and confidence in the tools.
