04 Operation soundboard

In this episode the soundboard, heart of the instrument, is being taken out. First thing is to loosen the hitchpin rails. With water and alcohol the old glueing joints can be dissolved, with patience one can do it without causing any damage.
Underneath the soundboard we find a lot of pieces of paper brought in there by mice. Between the pieces we found 8 missing escapement levers.
Since 2019 the Carl Bechstein Foundation in Berlin is building up a collection of historical keyboard instruments, reflecting the history of the piano. All instruments will be in perfect playing condition and in this film-series you'll see the whole proces of a restoration, starting from a total wreck. This fortepiano was built around 1795 in Vienna by Ferdinand Hofmann (1756-1829).
From this restoration film series are two versions, one with a German voice-over and this one with an English voice-over.
