the mars volta are trying to now release their material on independent labels (their next album will be independent apart from USA where they have contract restrictions with Universal) I don't think they have ended up in a bad way or would have thought bad of themselves they are playing no compromise music that is clever and doesnt spoon feed anyone. Bands can still be major label and maintain counter-culture values (Rage Against the Machine)

Led Zeppelin: that is the band that got a good label, and did REAL underground. . . the 70s, i think, it was the last decade where musicians had the freedom to do whatever they wanted. if it wasnt for Van Halen's manager, Eruption wouldnt be at our hearing pleasure :)

There is more choice today as to what to listen to because bands are advertising on the internet. But the problem with that is the market gets over saturated with bands and that makes people apathetic to liking them or wanting to buy their record as opposed to just stealing it.

that is so weird!!! the fact i digged for ATDI because i first listen to sparta a couple of hours ago, this song called cut the ribbon and i looked up the lyrics, and in the comment section it talked about mars volta. Thought they were fucking great. Then i found out that they were together. FUCKING AWESOME! dude in hours i found out about a great fucking band that kicks ass, thanks to the new way of digging for music. KZbin

I love political music and bands such as Midnight Oil and At The Drive-In, amongst many others. Cedric Bixler Zavala is obviously a smart man, as many have already said, and he is putting his point of view forward, a point of view that some minorities may have or those who are too afraid to speak out.

My god, in my honest opinion, ATDI was one of the most down to earth and realistic bands to come around for quite some time. I do listen to a lot of punk, but my favorite punk band by far is Lagwagon, simply because of their realistic views, not political or movement based.

I know but sometimes I look around and that is what I see from some people. I watched it again and I agree with what you are saying. The industry need to look at what people say on the web about bands. The underground cannot afford to be ignored too much longer or they might just go broke. I think that the real people who go broke are the listeners who never get to hear really different bands though. But that's just my opinion.

Everything you just said is exactly how I view Cedric and Omar. Technical skill, innovation and integrity, imo, sums up TMV. And, the various members of the band are into many other artistic avenues. Omar draws and paints. Cedric plays many instruments and quite a few members of the band skateboard. Honestly, I don't care about music classifications, but I just thought the point you were trying to make is a bit backwards.
